Messing with training some and want to use my fixskills to test this before the annual comes. Working on an sniping archer (similar to my rogue). Finding it really tight on points and need to know what I can give up and what needs to be changed.

I'd really like to 2x in ambush, but don't know where to pull the points from. Also I dont know if I am hurting myself by not having any Combat Manuv.
Advice appreciated!
Drop 1 harness power rank, it should be exactly at your level. You don't need to do anymore than 1x swim/climb combined. There is no need for that much climbing and especially that much swimming at that level. I'd have 30 total ranks and split it 20 climb/10 swim right now. Then pick up 1 per level of climb or swim so you are 50/50 or 40 climb 60 swim at cap.

Not having any Combat Maneuvers isn't a bad thing at the lower levels. Our spells are much better than the cmans for rangers. That being said if you do get them, they will more than likely be defensive.
2x ambush is expensive as you mentioned. Most Ranger if they go the route you mentioned only 1x in ambush. Our spell 613 does pick up the slack for only being 1x versus 2x.
Hiding and Stalking really becomes more of a RP choice, as you mentioned. I have found shooting in the open at Level 63 much more effective at this point in time.
I would recommend that you eventually pick up 24 ranks or so of MIU and AS. It would be nice to use some of the wooden amulets, wiregrass bracelets/anklets and rods/wands you can create with 614. Haste amulets can be a beautiful thing as well.
606 + 509 +haste+608 with a composit bow can equal a nice 1 second snipe shot.
I see you have 2x in survival. If you are wanting to be a skinner. I believe it is cheaper for you to 1x in survival and 1x in first aid. This could free up some points.
At 30 you do have 33 spell ranks. Most rangers unless they are going to be magical only 1x in magic. I am not saying what you did is wrong. But you mentioned you are tight with points.
Are you going to stick with Brig? Or will you be eventually heading into chain?
You have 20 ranks of Physical Fitness. Not being 1x in PF for life does make one cry.
Peace

Will be sticking with Brig. Might pick up the extra ranks for chain down the road but it is not in my current goals.
I should probably drop the 3 ranks in minor spirit, but I can really use the extra DS it adds. I want to make sure I keep 1x in ranger circle for the increases to mobility, etc. Does 102 lower archery AS? Never looked at that.
I'm 2x survival for skinning some, but mostly foraging. I'd rather spend the extra 1 MTP and do that rather than 1x FA and 1x Survival.
I do need to squeeze in AS and MIU soon, but finding the points is tough.
It's good to hear that 613 will make up for the 1x ambush. That makes things a lot easier.

Brig is nice if you are more magical. Normally I recommend to folks who are range to have either double chain or augmented chain. Basically for the CvA and crit values that chain has over brig. Broken arms = I can't shoot anymore. Unless you go Guardians of Sunfist then Sigil of Determination is your friend.
But if you have a nice set of brig .. go for it!
103 is nice but it is SOOOO easy to get a powerful look and a shot of dims from the clerics and empaths.
102 does hurt your Range AS.
I would recommend getting up to 640 then switch over to Minor Spirit. At 60 you would have 640 and 120. After that it is really up to you. My ranger will get up to 130 then switch back to Ranger ranks.
It is cool you want to keep 2x survival. However do keep in mind that you get some nice bonuses with spell 603 for foraging and 604 for skinning. My ranger with 64 Survival and 64 Firstaid has a pretty easy time at it.
For MIU and AS? I recommend just for grins. Test but don't apply. How many ranks of each could you get, If you were to reclaim the 3 minor spirit ranks.
But even before that I would get my PF up to 1x and keep it all the way till cap and post cap. There are so many advantages to being over trained in PF.
Whichever way you go. Your current build will work. It is hard to screw up a ranger :)

Does 102 lower bolt AS from a bow?
What is the point of doubling in survival? That's not a dig, I'm just not sure I really understand survival.

Yes 102 does hurt Range AS.
Survival: From Krakiipedia:
Survival is one of two skinning skills, along with First Aid. While the skill has other functions, skinning seems to be the primary reason a character would train in this skill. Survival also affects a character's ability to forage, resist damage due to weather (Such as near Pinefar), build a fire, or find a hidden passageway.
Survival will help prevent a skinner from being Poisoned when skinning a creature such as a snake.
Training in Survival will also assist in movement in some areas, such as the marshy areas outside of the Marsh Keep hunting ground.
Personally. 1x Survival and 1x First Aid was good enough for me. It is cheaper that 2x Survival. Plus you get the reduced RT from eating herbs and you can bandage yourself.

1x in each over 2x survival would save like 31 net MTP. That is enough to get some MIU or AS, so I think that is a worthwhile trade.
I'll plug that in and see what it gets me. Thanks for that advice!

You still haven't said why you want to over train in climbing and swimming. Actually being a ranger one of the few things 650 is actually good for is making you a better climber and swimmer and we also have water walking. Having 100 ranks total at cap between the two of them is more than enough IMO. If you want to do it because you feel that is part of your character go ahead, but otherwise I'd drop it down to 1x.
Also I don't know when you are getting into chain but I personally would want to be wearing it by level 75 and no later than 80. For reference my ranger had 110 armour ranks for hauberk by level 70.

No real reason for the 60/60 ranks for climb and swim. The suggestion was 40/60 and the cost was cheap so I just added them 1x each for the last levels.
Chain by 70 is probably not something I will shoot for. My current armor will last well into those levels, and probably beyond. I want to do a good deal of casting as well and hauberk will be too hard on that I believe. Getting the 1x in CM is much more important to me earlier on than 1x armor.
Right now my concern is the 30-50 range. Everything else will shake out in time and will most likely change.
Casting in aug chain isn't much worse than brig. Unless you have some brig with more than 20 points of crit padding I'd recommend getting chain by level 80, just my take.

I to went into augmented chain. I never regreted the change from rigid leather to chain.
Plus if you have a Paladin friend. You could ask them for Armored Fluidity.
Skill Name: Armored Fluidity
Mnemonic: fluidity
Other Requirements: None.
Available to: Paladins.
Prerequisites:
None
Armor Point Cost:
Rank 1: 20
Rank 2: 30
Rank 3: 40
Rank 4: 50
Rank 5: 60
Description: Adjusts a person's armor so that they can cast spells more easily while wearing it. Reduces spell failure chance by 10% of the base spell failure chance per rank (all fractions dropped).

60/60 climb/swim is a good goal to have at cap. I'm at 75/75, myself. They're both incredibly cheap and they can both save your life, so I say go for it.

That = Bad
If I'm correct, mixing types of padding that are different halves the effectiveness of each. And 620 is considered Elemental Padding.

Or maybe that is just for accessories...

Hello imperial scout brig. Hell if it's that just stay in brig. Although I have hauberk with MCP and that really rules. If you can get your hands on some great hauberk that would be good at cap (Neimanz' 9x MCP springs to mind).
Actually it wouldn't halve your padding, but unfortunately even with SMC enhancives no ranger can put elemental protection on brig with that much padding.

No, adding resistance to padded armor doesn't affect the padding at all. Unfortunately, it's impossible to 620 something with 30 points of padding because the SMC requirements are far too high. You can however have a warrior add P/C/S resistance with no penalty.
EDIT: Nevermind. Warrior resistance is reduced by padding, so you'd get no benefit.

Yea, that would be a cap goal to be sure. Having the brig on hand is the main reason I felt I could afford to be lax about armor use until much later on.
Yeah that really makes a huge difference. 30 points of padding on brig is superior to any plain chain.

had a quick question. if you don't go the hiding route and decide to be an out an the open ranger - what is the standard build?
2x ranged
2x perception
1x ambush
1x harness power [ max at current level ]
1x armor [ til double chain/augmented chain ]
1x spells
Besides points here and there in climb/swim. What do you do with all the extra points? I'm looking at CM stuff but they all just look defensive.

1x Dodge at a min. Maybe some SMC around 24 ranks. 1x PF for life. If you are in Sunfist, 1.5x to 2x in PF. MIU and Arcane Symbols 24 to 30 ranks.
Cmans are defensive. You will like having them around level 60 and higher.
