Anyone give up anything for Lent? What did you give up and how are you doing?
In the Greek Orthodox church, they do 40 days of fasting, no meat, dairy products, but most people just do it for Holy Week. I have done it for the whole lent before, but not this year.

Some chick was giving up wearing black.
She was wearing black three days later.
It was very stupid.

I tried to give up swearing. That didn't work.
I've got a secondary thing, where I started working out (instead of stopping something else) but so far, that's unsuccessful. I'm gonna try it though.

Since I like to celebrate every holiday, I'm trying to give up sarcasm and tongue in cheek for a week. At this time -- unsucessful.

You stole Tayre's idea. Guess he'll just have to give up drinking.
Doh!
What's next on the list?

I gave up bacon, and I really should have thought that out a little more. :(
I also started being more Christian, because some priest dude said he didn't want to hear what we were giving up [for Lent], he wanted to hear what we were taking up.

So I take it you're voting for Kerry now, instead of Bush?

The 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter. It's used as a time of fasting and penitence in preparation for Easter.

Is it supposed to represent the 40 days Jesus spent fasting or whatever? I always thought of it as the 40 days between eating normal amounts of chocolate and eating obscene amounts of chocolate. I really should know more considering I'm attempting the whole christianity thing again.

It's not really for Lent, but thinking about Lent gave me the idea.
I gave up Cokes/soft drinks two weeks ago. Diet ones are okay, but regular ones are off limits. Three days into it was really rough -- I had one of the worst headaches of my life from detoxing from the sugar/caffeine -- but since then, it's been pretty easy. I rediscovered how good iced tea tastes.
I think my next renunciation is going to be large plates. I'm thinking if I use my smaller salad-size plates at home, I'm not going to put as much food on them, which should help with my admittedly horrible portion control.
I'm never going to be bone-thin or anything, but I really want to drop at least some of the excess poundage. Then maybe I can get on Extreme Makeover so no one will recognize me!

I did the same a few months ago. Cut out coke. Bought an Iced Tea brewer, make a bunch of decaf iced tea. I hate diet. I can tolerate Diet Ginger Ale & Diet Sprite, but all kinds of diet cola suck ass.
Still get regular iced tea if I go out to lunch, though. The occasional coke makes me wince at the sweetness.

I've been drinking Diet Pepsi last few weeks. It's not bad, actually. Wish they still made Pepsi One.
I caved last week and bought a case of the new Sprite Remix :( It's like drinking candy.

You know what sucks when women diet and lose weight?
Smaller breasts.
Not funny God, not funny at all.

Actually, in all my gainings and losings, the cup size has remained the same -- though obviously, the chest measurement hasn't. Even when I was pregnant, they never really got any bigger. Not that they needed to, either.
I've always envied women who can wear cute bras. I could lose 100 pounds tomorrow, and the boobage would still never fit in anything from Victoria's Secret. Torrid has some cute stuff, but it's scaled up from little people size and doesn't have enough support.
Oh, and the only drinkable diet soda is Diet Dr Pepper, which of course is never in freaking vending machines.
Give up soda all together, and start drinking water.
You'll start feeling uber-good in about two weeks.

Wow, am I the only person that hates all non-diet drinks? I cant stand normal coke/sprite etc, gotta be diet or it just tastes like pure sugar! I live on diet coke!

Not at all, especially after quitting and going back and tasting one. I had a taste of Coke a week or so back, and I couldn't believe how sugary it was. Soda has to be killer on teeth.

I don't really drink soda, but they do still make Pepsi One! It's just rare to find for some reason. I literally have to NAG our Pepsi guy to bring it in my store.
Also, Sprite Remix makes me gag... and now they're coming out with ANOTHER kind of remix. :barf:

I like my diet Dr. Pepper. Anyone who thinks all diet soda tastes like crap should try it, it's actually better than non-diet, which is way too sugary. Coke's just nasty.

Pepsi-One isn't rare. We packaged and shipped over 26,000 2liter bottles to Munster just last night.
There just isn't a demand for it in your area, not enough of a demand that makes it worth the local filler's time to produce anyway.

I did XC for about 2 weeks. It sounds stupid, but I couldn't handle all the running.
Then again running was never my strong point, the only time I ever broke a 6 minute mile was once in gym when I cheated, jogged 3 and said I ran 4 (my time was like 6:06, my fastest real time was 6:31).
Crystal Pepsi seemed even sweeter than regular Pepsi to me =P.... Also, Diet Dr. Pepper DOES actually taste more like regular Dr. Pepper, heh, so it's not so bad as far as diet drinks go, but I'd rather drink water or iced tea. Oh, Diet Rite isn't so bad either, since it's sweetened with Splenda...
Sugar or Sugar-Free... all soft drinks are bad for you because of the acid. I rarely drink them (used to be addicted when I was younger).
As for Lent... I just give up!
