Does anyone play GSIV who isn't a returning player from GSIII?

I thought this was a good question.

On a related note, I was just thinking back about the oldest version of the website I could remember. Unless something else pops into my head, the oldest one I can think of is the tan background with the jewel-shaped buttons.

Started playing right at the end of what was GS II. Played until the Genie bills were just too much to handle and had to stop. Came back when they moved to AOL and man, the population SOARED.

Its hard to believe what is $15-$50 today was $5-$8 an hour back in 91.

Same boat. I did all of half a dozen hours on the pay to play, then went ape-shit on AOL when it was free. I remember populations well in excess of 3000 people during prime time and the lag was epic. The game interface looked like wordpad with a white screen, black text, and you had to cut and paste in long commands if you did not want to suck. Oh, and the noobism was rampant. "JOIN ME FOR TRAPDOOR!!!!!!1111". Then Icemule opened and all the morons went to the thyril swarms to be bothersome.

I just messed around a bit when AOL was still on an hourly rate, because those free AOL discs were everywhere. Started pretty hardcore as soon as they went monthly and my parents could afford to subscribe.

It's sad to think that there are billions of people in the world and simu can only get 3-400 people on at a time

I was part of the AOL wave that made half of the genie folks leave because we were all jackasses. Yeah. One of those. Parents flipped when they saw a $500 aol bill, so they took my 9600 baud modem. I went and bought a 14.4 and they flipped again. Then it went monthly and I was a happy camper. And my grades went down. F u, gs!! :) Quit during college years, came back 3 years ago from the force of nostalgia and still love it despite it's downfalls.

I'm about an 8 year veteran or so. Definitely not as long as a good portion of regular posters, but was definitely around for GS3. Telfaagha is the one who got me into the game and I enjoyed it vicariously through him as a teenager haha.

I remember populations well in excess of 3000 people during prime time and the lag was epic.I also played in 91, which should not be confused with '91, or 1991. I'm talking 91 AD, when Domitian ruled the eternal Empire. I have a clear and distinct memory of thousands of thousands of THOUSANDS of people on line (during prime hours) and paying thirty bars of gold bullion per second of access.

haha, yeah i remember getting ditched down there in my first day or two.

and I remember going on my first trip to Icemule with Panthyr(sp), some sylvan sorcerer who used a morning star i think.. I also remember thinking he was an asshole. Probably because he'd been paying $8 an hour for his hobby and now a bunch of fucking kids were coming and ruining it for free.

Not only did you try to get the best rolls when you created a character but the age was in a band too. I rolled up a character who started out as age 38 for some reason, all my friends were really jealous because I was level 5 and already "in his 40s".

I think starting age was tied to con or some shit. I did the same thing. It was awesome being like level 15 and being in my 50s.

I need to find the old login picture for AOL. Had four characters with "Gemstone III" underneath them. I know someone has the old manual too, that damn thing led to everyone dropping cheese everywhere.

This photo always bugged me back in the day because whoever made it clearly had no idea what classes were in GS.

Why did everyone drop cheese? I remember doing it, but I don't remember why!

To attract rats (chase!). Folks would also wave the cheese.

Some of my best memories in the game were the groups in arch wights before they ruined that area and tree parties... you know before they ruined that area too.

I don't know why the GMs at the time were so against promoting group hunting. I made friends in those areas that lasted the entire time I played.
