Well, I just now got to experience a pet of mine dying in my hands, my green cheeked conure. His name was Lance and I've had him since he was a tiny baby. He was only a couple of years old and I really feel totally helpless since birds are not like dogs or cats and can just have a heart attack out of nowhere. I am extremely sad right now and am not looking forward to telling my little girl that her birdie passed away.

neg My lil conure 02-19-2010 03:52 PM OMG you fucking fail for having a bird to begin with asshat.
I have the bird because I have a little girl, and the bird was hers. So flame on.

i've got probably 50 neg reps and not a single one did someone say who they actually are. It's convenient for spiteful people because they can hide behind the anonymity of repping.

I feel for you. My girlfriend has two green-cheek conures and a bronze-wing pionus, and they're pretty awesome. She's even got them potty-trained. They say, "Gotta poop" and then wait for you to hold them over a trashcan. You might try Craigslist if you want to get another one. Lots of people rehome birds.

Yeah, he was the sweetest little guy, loved to snuggle when you held him and everything...such a sweet little bird. Holding him while he passed away was definitely something I had never experienced before, so I was pretty upset when I made this post. Was wondering if anyone else had gone through the same thing with a pet.

Maybe tell her the bird escaped and flew away?

She's pretty quick and will know i'm full of it if I tell her that. I kept him pretty much to where he couldn't fly off. I'm just gonna tell her that his little heart gave out, I guess, and that her grampa is going to bury him. Then maybe ice cream...ice cream makes everyone feel better...(unless you are lactose intolerant).

There is a very dipshit bird in my pop's office that drives me nuts. When she gets pissed the shrieks make my ears ring.
Not enough meat on it or I'd cook her.

Ha ha yes...actually mine would do that OR when the theme song from Spongebob came on. My daughter said he was just singing along to it, but I think it pissed him off... although he did dance along with it.

Aww that sucks. I had a green cheek & she was the sweetest little thing. Much better than the other conures for noise also.
Just an fyi their hearts don't just give out, something else had to have been wrong. Birds instinctively attempt to hide their illnesses, otherwise they would be quickly signaled out by predators. The best predictor for their illness is by a loss in weight.
If you're not going to have a necropsy done then I wouldn't re-use the cage. That's just me though.
Hope your little girl heals quickly :(

I lost my bengal cat about 3 months ago to a sudden illness. One day he's fine and dandy, the next thing I know I'm holding him as they put him to sleep. It tore me apart.

Yes and I am so sorry you lost your cat too. It's the sudden loss that is so upsetting. I'm glad you got to hold him. It makes things alot better knowing that you were there at the end of it all. Thanks everyone for the kind words today...and my little girl handled herself ALOT better than I did. Of course there were tears and alot of them...

For someone who whines about anonymous rep, you seem to like leaving your own name off:
[gray] My lil conure 02-19-2010 06:29 PM seriously?

Ha! He left me anonymous gray rep too
I guess that's what I get for signing mine to him. Good thing those other 50 people were smart enough to avoid his wrath.

Most tropical birds kept as pets are forced slave immigrants who have been stuffed in a truck and smuggled over the border - many dying of starvation and disease in the process- only to be jammed in tiny cages which shorten their lives considerably....all for the purpose of decoration.
JUST KIDDING.
Sorry bout your bird. :(

I had a pet squirrel I raised from a baby. I let him go when he got older though. Wanted him to be free and in the wild like he was supposed to be. I would freak my friends out when I told them "hey...watch this shit....bet I can make that squirrel come down out of that tree and eat these peanuts out of my hand..." "fuck you, no way!" it was my own little magic trick lol
