Be careful over there and come back in one piece. The sandbox sucks, and the Afghan side gets cold as hell this time of year. If you can fit them into your seabag, take your own high-end thermal gear to wear under everything else. That and some of those chemical hand warmers will save your ass if you are in the field for very long at a time.

Keep your head down and your lid on.

Wish you all the best. Read 3 Cups of Tea, and Blackhawk Down on the flight over? Or, Hemmingway compiled an anthology of war stories called Men At War for his sons, so that they might see all aspects of armed conflict before they're asked to serve; excellent reading, and you can probably find it cheap in a used book store.

I don't know what to tell a soldier to be honest, other than I do sincerely hope all those skills you've learned serve you well, and you make it back with sound mind and body. Peace,

-Paul

You gonna be on base the whole time, or do you have to do something shitty like be on a fly away team and go to FOBs in the middle of the mountains?

I was on Kandahar for 5 months a few years ago and it wasn't too terrible. Hell, they probably even have wifi there by now. Bagram's much nicer I've heard.

We are going to be in a COP doing mounted/dismounted patrols somewhere around Camp Leatherneck in Helmand(So no mountains, yea!). Pretty much just a plain jane tour. Nothing too "OMG elite badass Delta force SEAL team 6" stuff.

As far as anyone wanting to send stuff to guys out in country, the PX system in Iraq was pretty robust after we were there for a little while, I haven't been to Afghan before, but I hear its somewhat getting towards that level at some of the Major FOBs. I know in Iraq we loved tearing through girlscout cookies, so thats probably a pretty safe thing to send to anyone out there.

Q: Why this strange post? The guy is going to Afghanistan to fight terrorists, why the hell is this guy preachin' Islam?!
A: In Islamic history many people were planning to fight the Muslims and their hearts opened up to the religion and they became guided, like the 2nd Caliph Umar al-Khattab, who originally set out to kill Muhammad (pbuh) on the day he converted.)

Your question was correct in phrasing, I am here to fight terrorists. Your answer, however, says Muslims, which is not correct.

Islam doesn't appeal to me, I like bacon and beer. Besides, if Afghan is home to the more hardcore religious types, I'll post up some pics later..... Fuck that.
