I seem to recall hearing something about a funny interaction between deepening and lightening of containers. That is, that the two cancel each other out some how. Is this the case? If so, how should one go about applying the services to an item? Thanks for your help!

I've never heard that.
As to applying the services to an item?
Loresing it's weight empty and full and then have the services done. If it doesn't seem accurate afterwards, you have some data to submit to a GM to have them fix it.

The weight of a container will affect how much if can hold. So, if you max lighten something first, the amount it can hold when max deepened will be brought down. The recommendation is to deepen first, then lighten.
does the amount an item can hold affect how light it can be?
meaning if you deepen it first does this mean it can not weigh as little as it would if you lightened first?

If you start with a normal 10lb backpack that holds 90lbs from a shop, you can usually choose to
1) lighten it to 5lbs and keep a 90lb capacity
2) deepen it to 150lbs and keep it 10lbs.
There's a mix of combinations in the middle but each choice you make will affect the limitation of the other.

Which is why old containers weighing 1 lb and over 100 lb capacity are so valuable.
Shameless plug.
