So I was "let go" today.
They had already reduced hours down to 20 hours and I guess they finally decided to get rid of us.
Not sure what to do right now.
Anyone have any advice on taking advantage of back to school benefits? When I applied for unemployment benefits today the woman said something about PELL grants but TBH I don't know anything about them.
Too much to think about right now!

If you want to go back to school then do it man. *(you've got nothing to lose to see if you get some pell grants) Shit's started for this semester but the earlier you apply and fill out your FAFSA you the more likely you are to get PELL money for the next.
I say do it. Even the the student loans are super low interest.

Agreed with SOT.
With it about as hard as it could be to find a job and with the low interest rates on loans and with how the government's tossing money out for students, right now's as ideal a time as any to go back.
Take a few days off, then look into schools around you to see what programs they're offering and if you meet the pre reqs.

Make sure you pick something that will actually have a market. Like Nursing.

Under water basket weaving, untapped market of the future!
If you know what college you're wanting to attend start hitting their website and make some phone calls their advisors will be able to give you some good info on grants, scholorships, the programs they offer, etc.
I have to wait until May when the wife finishes her masters but I've already got a basic idea of my course load and costs. It's never too early to start getting info together.

I'm 1.5 quarters done with my Master's program. It blows ass being back in school. The fact that my earning potential instantly doubles is my driving force.

I actually took that. Just to say that I did. Was a nice bird course.

yah, i'm going back to school at nearly 42 (in 3 minutes) and taking some of the core classes at this time sucks given I have more experience in running a biz then these folks ever have, but as was said, doubles and triples my earnings with an MBA and Six Sigma, even if its a crock.

He's an expert in being unemployed and unemployable.
I just finished with my BS degree in December. I've been applying everywhere I can think of for my field and still have only had 1 interview.
It's a rough time right now. I plan to continue on with my Masters probably next year, but I need a half-decent job first.
I qualified for Pell Grants all through college due to my parents making shit, and then me making even less once I was married etc.
The Pell Grants are very useful and the government is extending it (as far as I know) to help people who are unemployed or wanting to return. I mean hell, it's free money. It's our tax dollars. You may as well if you want to get your education solidified and have the motivation to go back. College is tough work and insanely stressful at times but it's a means to a better end.
Keep in mind a few things though.
1- Grants don't cover ALL of the tuition/fees. Student loans might be necessary on top of the grants if you don't have anything saved up. This can add up if you're not careful.
2- Don't just spend any extra money from Student loans if you can help it.
It's tempting as hell. (Yes I have a new PC from this) but I wish I had the extra cash in savings so I could knock out my student loans right away.
3- Worst case senario though you end up like me. You can have extra student loan $$ to help with bills during rough months. This is generally what happened with my, having a kid, etc etc.. extra money needed. Now I just have to worry about my 20k in loans to pay back now that I'm done.
Anyhow, I'm sorry to hear you lost your job. My Dad may be loosing his here soon as well.
