Did a quick search for a previous thread and couldn't find one, so I figured I'd start one.

I've been attending a weekly board game night at a local pub since I moved with a few other graduate students. Decent beer specials and the pizza is pretty good.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone had any favorite games to play. We are mostly playing the new era of resource management games from Europe, such as Settlers, Puerto Rico, San Juan, Power Grid, and disaster based games like Taluva and Downfall of Pompeii.

So yeah, any ideas? And if you are based near Reno, you are welcome to come.

My favourite board games are Articulate and Pictionary. Diplomacy is cool too.

Used to play Squad Leader years ago, but that's hardly something you'd want to set up in a pub. I'd say break out the cards and play Pinochle. Risk is always a good board game too, but a good Risk game takes a while to play.

We've been playing the star wars version of risk as well.

My most recent favorite game is Dominion. It's actually a card game, no board or dice or anything, but still... I'd say that makes it more portable but it's got A LOT of cards. Not collectible or anything, like Magic or Pokemon. Just a lot of cards in the box.

But yeah, Dominion, great and easy to learn. It's the compromise my boyfriend and I arrived at after he decided he no longer wanted to lose at Risk.

This.
Add diplomacy to the list as well. When we had enough players for A&A we'd mix in a set of diplomacy rules and even tried throwing in some resources which was fun.

Risk is sort of boring to me.

I used to do a weekly game of settlers, recently we've been trying to get in um... not even bimonthly since we're all so busy, but games of Arkham Asylum. Be prepared to set aside a good couple hours for the first few games you play while you learn to get fast at it, but it's a LOT of fun.

Because it wasn't said. Monopoly. I'm hardcore, I play to win.

But I really like Cranium and since I'm guessing you guys don't have a tv, I really love Scene It. Different variations of it. I like the Disney ones from when I was a kid because it's all I watched. Brings back memories.

Loaded Questions and Apples to Apples is fun.. I have found Apples to Apples is only fun with the right types of people. When people take it very literally it's boring.

Diplomacy has always been a favorite of mine too.

Apple to apples is my litmus test for people I would ever want to hang out with.

As in, if you like that game, you're an idiot and I would never want to hang out with you.

No offense.

Apples to Apples can either suck hardcore or it can be fun. I've had it go both ways. If you're drinking and you're around people who have a sense of humor akin to the PC it can be good, especially if there's one person who isn't that you can offend..

Nothing quite like playing "Martin Luther King Jr." for "Troublemaker".

That said I've also played it with a church group ... (don't ask me why I was hanging out w/ a chruch group). That sucked. Generally I try to avoid it, because as a drinking game it's too slow paced, and requires too much paying attention.

Any combo of card with Hitler usually makes for good times.

I believe I played it with "Cuddly" with a Jewish couple, which makes not collect 200 bucks and go straight to hell.

Just got Monopoly City, but haven't played it yet.I have to come up with a new "Enron rules" for it. Where cheating and stealing are a major part of the game.

And I was actually going down to a hobby shop today to get a new Axis and Allies. Thanks for mentioning Hero Quest. Now I'm gonna have to spend some more paper. (they have a baddass A-10 Warthog model too, gonna have to pick that up)

I've got an unopened Axis and Allies I got from my ex-wife like 8 years ago. I used to play it in the Army constantly when we were in the field. She would never try it with me and no one else I know wants to. Sad face.

I always liked Talisman, had a lot of the addons for it.

Did anyone ever play that huge ass World of Warcraft boardgame? I thought about buying that a few times.

I've been getting more and more into tabletop gaming, so I searched Board Games and....

http://i2.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/028/430/raise_thread.jpg

I cannot say enough good things about the latest one I tried Takenoko (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/70919/takenoko). I learned about it on TableTop w/ Wil Wheaton (http://geekandsundry.com/shows/tabletop/). This show is definitely helping navigate the landscape of available options since new board games come out daily, it seems!

What games have you been digging lately?

I love Takenoko! It's pretty much the cutest game ever.

The bf and I have been enjoying a deck-building game called Star Realms (http://www.amazon.com/White-Wizard-Games-Realms-Deckbuilding/dp/B00HRGMPIU), which is a bit like MtG but without the shameless money-grubbing requirement to buy 10k cards. It's also available as a droid/apple app which is nice.

We have played Star Realms once. It was super quick and dirty for playing at restaurants. We figured out that we were playing it wrong half the game but still had fun.

That is pretty much why we got it. We have a lot of games (I'd say a lot at least), but some of them are more difficult to play with new to games players. We've been beefing up the easy to start games. Pandemic is also really great, especially if you're around someone that has a hard time losing.
