Anyone still play? If so, how is it?

Bunch of guys I work with still play, they like it but apparently they are down to like 100 to 200k users, their studio got merged with Bioware-Austin, and not much content has been released lately.

The article I was reading was a bit more recent I believe. They took another hit after the merger.

I thought it was garbage. On the other hand, the Warhammer 40k mmo is being shown for the first time at this years E3.

Ouch. I'm guessing that was the employees that didn't want to move to Austin? Either way, I'd definitely pass on this game, and wait for the new Star Wars MMO from Bioware.

The thing about that is... well Star Wars games suck dick, and that game looks terrible.

Rogue Squadron (?) for Gamecube was awesome.

Bioware typically puts out a great product. If you don't like star wars in general, sure, I'd avoid it too.

What kind of idiotic logic is this? When it comes out, say two years from now, you're going to say "no, I'm not going to play that game, I heard about it two years ago and I don't have that kind of patience".

I played this game upon release and did enjoy it, I think it is the best pvp game out there. I recently came back a couple months ago and have a renewed appreciation for the game. The game basically is now condensed to 3-4 servers from the couple dozen it had initially. I like the game because I don't have hardly any time to play games anymore and I can just jump on a toon and burn through a few scenarios and call it a night. I think it is an underrated game and just playing characters through Tier 1 and 2 are what I enjoy the most personally.

Seriously?

1. OP asks if WAR (a released, available game) is any good.
2. Someone says to pass on WAR and wait for SWTOR.
3. I mention it's going to be at least a year for SWTOR to come out, so he should keep looking at WAR/other games that are actually out if he wants something to play.

That's the logic. I wasn't giving a recommendation for what he should do two years from now, I was giving a recommendation on what he should do now. The current official estimate for SWTOR is Spring 2011.

Avoid it != 'get something else in the meantime until it's out, then make a decision on avoiding it or not'

Someone told him to avoid SWTOR because "Star Wars games suck dick, and that game looks terrible."

I said "Or avoid it if you don't want to wait over a year."

Don't buy into multi-year hype like every other pre-release mmo. It's ridiculous advice to tell someone who asks for opinions on a current game to wait over a year for something else.

Celephais

Yeah I certainly don't think buying into any pre-release hype is a good idea. I've been burned extremely badly by GT5 (I bought my PS3 two years ago with the reasoning of "I'm going to need it for GT5 anyway", it's worked out fine but still).

On topic I really enjoyed playing WAR, but things started to slow down as you get higher level, and as you hit the next tier you were just too low level to participate constructively, and the quests/hunting became slow and tedious (especially because at the time I was playing Order on a heavily Chaos server, so there weren't may 'open' PvPs that we had hopes of winning)

Because the alternatives that are currently out there are really great:

Aion (looks great, but is a korean grind fest)
Wow (I'm going to assume Makkah has already played, and moved on from Wow. If not there is still some decent content there)
Eq2 (fewer players than WAR, I believe)

I already gave my opinions on WAR, and suggested another game. Hardly pre game hype since I've seen it up and running. But jumping to conclusions is fun!

Because of the longer dev cycles for MMO, and a lack of quality competition, I think its well within reason to suggest an MMO that hasn't been released yet. Typically you're only going to see one or two quality MMO releases a year (that aren't free to play, pay to upgrade model).

vanguard isnt bad, but like gs, its on its last legs. the only other mmo that looks decent is darkfall but it doesn't have a trial so i'm a bit hesitant to play

Vanguard IS bad. Avoid that heaping pile of crap at all costs.

Silvanostar

it definitely has its problems but its got a shit load of content and the combat mechanics are far superior than the eqs, wow, etc.

not many other mmos out there capture a true dungeon crawl feeling like vg

MMO's are just too dependent on personal taste to really go off someone elses' opinion. Play the trials of each (most have free trials, WAR does at least) and see if any get your attention. You can waste a week or two at least on each of them and have some fun for free.

Some pitfalls of trials that I remember:

WAR- 1-10 is obnoxiously fun. Scenarios are really well balanced and you feel like you can participate right at the start. Unfortunately, that's all you see during the trial. But it could rule the game out or sell you on it.

AoC- 1-20 is completely different than 20-cap. So again, trial will be quite different than endgame. Lot of hype when this game came out, and you needed a high-end computer at the time to run it.

AION- Gameplay/quests just seemed too similar to WoW, except characters didn't feel "solid" to me. Might be worth a shot to trial it if available, Beta was a clusterfuck and nearly unplayable.

LOTRO- Didn't buy the regular game to compare, but the trial was quite bland.

And of course some of the old MMOs still have loyal fanbases (EQ1/2, L2, etc). But the older MMO's are more grindy and there's less pvp (assuming that's what you want since you're interested in WAR).

The other day I almost started playing EQ again, I found a free server (probably illegal) that was a progression server, project 95 or something like that (the year it 'started'), that was setup as EQ before the expansions, but with all the interface upgrades. Very very tempting to someone who remembers the old days fondly (of course I'd start playing and realize it was my nievity that made it so fun back in the day)

I must have played a different game, because the Vanguard I played was a poor excuse for a game.

Vanguard was terrible when I played it, but I started when it went live, and I've heard they cleaned up their act. It was a terrible terrible excuse for a game when it went live.

At that rate, you might as well just wait for Hero's Journey.

I played Pirates of the Burning Sea for a month last year, had a great premise and the crafting system rocked, but the gameplay of actually sailing ships was pretty horrid. I got an email from them they are dropping to only two servers now.

Started Ages of Conan too and dropped off when the ganking was off the charts, even on the PvE servers. Let alone it was soooo buggy to start.

DDO is still fun now that its gone free, with a game store to buy upgrades for cash.

when vg went live, it was piss poor. i opened up a 30 day trial and never finished it. i started playing it again last year after i got bored with my blacksmith in gs.

in terms of polish, its got miles to go before it can play as smoothly as wow, but vg's got some good content despite smedly and co. over at soe really mangling it up.

My MMO progression has been GS->DAOC->WoW->EVE->WAR->Aion->EVE->DAOC->GS where I am currently.

Nothing seems to really be holding my interest of the games that are out. I have fun a couple times a week in League of Legends, and in GS.

Otherwise I just play Dragonage and mess around with former MMO friends in Star Trek Online.

One of these days I should get around to selling my Warhammer and EVE accounts.

I was thinking of going Star Trek but just going on other opinions I am staying away. Probably not going to get into anything fresh until Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, SWTOR.
