Anyone who remembers this game for PC and 3DO in the 90s probably remembers how awesome it was, especially if you played the 3DO one since it had full voices and improved music.
I stumbled on a Windows friendly remake yesterday. This is epic. Now I don't have to buy another 3DO off eBay.
sc2.sourceforge.net (sc2.sourceforge.net)
Had no issues installing or getting it to run. This rocks.
I've been playing this for the past several days. Terribly addicting game. The new music is great and even the voice acting is good.

Awesome thanks for the heads up.
I've been playing Morrowind the past day and it's unbearable now. I was for cereal addicted to SC2 back in the day.

All the new music and the voices were from the 3DO version it was good stuff. Make sure you get the Spathi guy to freak out when you first encounter them, the voice on it is awesome. Save the game first though cause whatever line triggers it makes him attack you after.

Yeah, they've been working on that one for a really long time.
+ You can toggle between PC, 3DO, and remixed music
+ It works damn near flawlessly on high end computers (though I haven't tried in my Windows 7 install yet)
+ It still has an active fan base and the forums are actually pretty helpful
+ It still has active coding staff
- The saved games are in your application data directory so it's real easy (I've done this twice damnit) to lose your saves if you're a chronic "wipe the computer and re-install" person
Overall.. it's badass.. it works.. you get speech, music, sound, everything.. if you're a fan of Star Control 2.. you MUST get this version and even if you don't play it, just have it lying around in wait for a rainy day.
If you've never played Star Control 2 but like games that take some time to beat and actually have a pretty decent plot, check it out. It's a classic.

Is there anywhere on the website where you can get the star map that game with the game and/or the instruction manual? I remember the manual listed the top 20 star systems for different types of resources. Came in really handy.

Maybe not on the website but SC2 is still pretty f'ing popular so you can find all sorts of stuff out there. I have a bunch of stuff too, so gimme a little bit and I'll post what I can here.
Also, I have a bunch of things I made myself too that I'll post.

The other things I have are pretty spoiling if you're wanting a near virgin experience. I made (though it's not complete because as I said, I lost my saved game and that really kicked the wind out of me) a star listing of the important stars (and ones that I explored to see what they had). I also have a REALLY old Arilou portal map I made that I can scan and put up too.
[EDIT: Hah, nevermind. I've never actually read the manual until now. I didn't have it or the map when I first played back in the day so I had to make my stuff on my own. The manual tells you everything you need to know.]

That would rule. I had an old one I just drew on paper, but I stashed it in the instruction manual. I'm pretty sure I have it and the star map around here somewhere, but something like that would be easier anyway.
Your map and manual remakes are l33t too.

Those aren't mine. I found them online and saved them.
This though is mine and although it's crappy (and old), it gets the job done :P

If I had the time.. this thread would get me playing to.
I, however, know how addicting it is and so will be waiting until a better time to get back into it :D

:( All over and so fast. Great trip down memory lane but I don't think I'd play it again for a long time again. The voice acting was awesome. They did a fucking great job on this port overall. (I didn't experience one single bug/glitch shockingly!)
Any way highly suggest anyone who hasn't ever played this to go through it at least once.

Damn already? How long did it take you? I always remembered this game being long as fuck.

It can take long as fuck for sure. Took me about 12 hours this time maybe of game play BUT I remembered some things early on from my countless hours of playing years ago.
Ended up with such a head start that doing all the side quests and screwing around got boring so I just focused on the main quest.
Got to the point where I didn't have to mine shit so early. Didn't have to explore. Nothing could touch my flagship and never used any escorts unless I was bored etc so I just said fuck it and pumped it up to the finale.
I did take time out to screw over the druuge however. Hilariously so. I remembered it being a sort of an exploit but his reaction is scripted to it they intended the possibility.
I may play it again soon and just take a lot slower route.

How do you screw the Druuge? I can't remember if I did it or not last time I played or what even happens when you do it it's been so long.

There is some spoiler possibility depending on your knowledge of the game but here is the basic.
Druuge run a corporation and sell and buy things like the master trader does obviously but they barter in crew members mostly which will piss off your star base.
Anyways there are some basic components to this deal.
1) You need to have the quasi-portal device already.
2) You need to the bruxi something or other hyper-wave caster
3) You need to have gotten high efficiency fuel cells from the trade master.
4) Enough RU to build the flagship up (definitely shouldn't be a problem at by this time)
a) goto your SB at sol
b) strip your modules
c) install all high efficiency fuel cells in every slot except for one crew module.
d) Load her up with say 100 fuel
e) launch, get to hyperspace and quasi portal to the druuge sector (I've got all the coords written down if you want them... half the fun in this game is taking notes)
Land at the druuge trading HQ as they call it and offer to take him up on his offer to trade the bruxi (I think that's what it's called) caster and in exchange he'll give your ship a full supply of fuel.
He thinks he's screwing you because really I ran around with no morre than 210 fuel units capacity most of the game.
Anyways he makes the deal and you get something like 2000 fuel units. Funny reaction. You go back to starbase and unload 2000 or so fuel for something like 40,000 ru in your bank and rebuild your ship to spec.
Nothing fancy just amusing. I was just expecting to be getting over on the deal when I was then surprised by reaction. Could tell the programmers totally thought about that ahead of time.
Also could you have sex with the Siren chick back on the PC 3DO days? I didn't remember that.

Heh I don't think I ever did that before with the Druuge. I just flew around unfriendly areas starting fights when I needed money once my ship was good enough but I might do it this time just to see what their reaction is.
And you could always bang the Syreen, yeah.

Hahaha, yeah, that's awesome. I love shafting the Druuge.
I remember my first time through (I was a kid) I actually didn't think of the 'morals' of the game and sold off my crew into slavery. I got back to the starbase and the commander goes "wtf you douche, we're raising the price of crew." I was a pretty bad player at the time and so I would lose a lot of crew to fights. I felt so bad about it morally, and worried that it would hurt my RU, that I started a new save game. It wasn't until later that I thought about loading up with fuel containers to shaft them.
Another method I used to make money in the early days was to get the Yehat to give me ships and then I'd go sell them. However, playing through these days I really don't have money issues since we're not doing stupid things (like losing escorts because of a pimped out ship).
The thing I love the most about this game is the virgin experience has so many "oh wow, I wonder what's going on with that..." situations.
Though.. playing a little bit of Star Control 1 helps because then you know who the original races are and that makes you try to search them out for help.
