Upgrading your AG Badge

Ok so I have a badge with rank 10 material. I'm trying to get a Spirit Recovery boost on it, which I assumed I'd be able to do at this point since it's the highest ranking material, but when I ask for it he replies:

Duane takes your badge and peers at it through a large green crystal lens. He says, "It won't be able to enhance your Spirit Recovery in this state."

Now I have no other enhancives on it; I removed them. Why can't I add spirit recovery at this point?

from my understanding upgrading each category equally nets you more 'space' in your badge than upgrading one category to the max. I'm at a level 5 motif and 6 in everything else and can get +1 spirit recovery. (just over 1m BPs earned)

Yeah, I don't have any definitive evidence, but I've been led to believe that upgrading everything as evenly as possible is the best practice.

If you want your badge to hold two different enhancives, upgrade one thing. If you want it to hold the maximum power for one enhancive, upgrade it all evenly. Yours can probably hold two lower level enhancives.
