Ok, trying to help my grandma with her computer. It's an e-machines, probably 4 years old. The video processor is integrated with the motherboard. I assume this went bad because the computer would fire up but we weren't getting any activity on the monitor. So I installed a pci video card yesterday. When I booted the machine I had action on the screen, I could enter setup etc. However after the windows load screen the screen went black again. I next booted in safe mode, which worked fine. I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for the new card. Tried to boot normally, again I get the black screen.... Any thoughts on what I should do next?

Disable the onboard video. It sounds like the OS is trying to use that and not the pci video.

That sounds rather familiar. Did you disable the onboard card in the BIOS?

I didn't, never messed with BIOS, is it simple?

It's fairly straight-forward, but there are guides available. If you can give us the model of the motherboard, or the BIOS version number, can probably get you a step-by-step guide.

No idea, I'm at the office now and won't be going back to fiddle with it until tonight or tomorrow

When you first power on the machine you'll see a PRESS F2/F8/F10/DEL/SOMETHING to enter setup/bios do that. Once you're in there navigate how it tells you (arrows, pg up, pg down, etc) look for onboard video, disable it, profit?
