Happy Dec. 21st everyone!

It isn't the end of time in the universe...just time on this planet. Some of us have ways to avoid the problem...whether we Brittany Murphy it or Dave Bowman it.

And here I thought this was ANOTHER Obama thread...

Does anyone here actually think this is plausible? Just curious. Aside from Lord Paco of course.

The world has not yet denied its impending doom, so I think it's entirely plausible.

Some neat info there, also the link off that page to this: http://www.lunarplanner.com/HCmovies/HCmovie300Frame.html has a cool video of it (if you ignore the religious mumbo jumbo)

Plausible? Sure. There are any number of ways the world could end in a way either predictable or unpredictable. Here's my top five theoretically plausible ones.

Gamma Rays from a supernova top the list. Hard to predict though unless you happened to be protected by working on a specific government project. We'd be dead pretty quick from that.

Magnetic Reversal. We're pretty overdue for one, so theoretically the Mayans could have figured that out too. It isn't really known if it will kill people but it would surely fuck up civilization. Probably on the scale of an EMP worldwide but it could also remove the magnetosphere or allow huge amounts of solar radiation to cook us.

Soviet Doomsday Device. Probably was built, who knows if it works or not. Basically a bunch of nuclear weapons fired with no warning in just about every direction. Goal is nuclear winter, not targeted destruction since it was designed to function in the event that Soviet leadership was decapitated and unable to retaliate to a pre-emptive US strike. Could just malfunction one day and, whoops, On The Beach ensues.

Massive methane discharge. There are fairly large quantities of frozen methane on the slopes of many continental shelves underwater. A change in temperature in a specific area of a certain quantity could cause a chain reaction where methane is explosively released further exacerbating temperature flux which could then release all the frozen methane. Difficult to say if it would be enough to kill all of us, but it wouldn't be good times for the survivors.

Ice Age on steroids. Probably the least likely of the bunch, but fun to talk about with the DC Snowpocalpyse 09 giving me the day off today. Basically you have the albedo of the planet reach a tipping point due to freak snow cover across the globe from a major blizzard at just the right time in the galactic cycle of the solar system to set up an instant Ice Age. Positive feedback loops galore and would likely last for several thousand years.

I think it's very plausible. Aside from some really nut job shit some people/institutions have made a serious case for it.

From what I've read about them, the likelihood of geomagnetic reversal killing everyone doomsday style is small, but it would open us up to being hit with more radiation and thus lifespans would likely decrease and all that other fun stuff that comes with increased radiation. Not fun no matter how you slice it, but I guess our night sky would look a lot prettier, lol.

If that's the case then why are you so worried about what Obama is doing?

Happy Dec. 21st everyone!

I'll repeat what I said a while back...

Scene: Somewhere in Guatemala, 1012 AD

Frank: Look, Joe, I've finished 1000 years worth of calendars!
Joe: Seriously, dude. Give it a rest. Have a beer.

Scene: Same place, 1912 AD

Jim: OMG, the calendar ends in 2012! The world is going to end!
Bob: Seriously, dude. Give it a rest. Have a beer.

Oh and while we're all waiting for the end of the world and pondering how it will arrive (you are all going to be the last and slowest eaten, just sayin') why don't we watch this witty and incisive critical review of the Phantom Menace...
