I have no job. I'm getting kinda bored playing GS all day. I also work out and watch ESPN. Sometimes south park, movies, or other random on demand shows. My favorite hobby is golf, but now its too cold. Been looking for a job for about a year now , and have an interview in a week. That is all!

Oh, and I ran out splenda for my coffee, so I am really bummed not to have coffee today. Oh, and we have our heat at like 60 degrees, so when the "heat" comes on in my apt, it blows on me and I get colder :( I cannot change the heat setting lest I receive the wrath of my girlfriend.

Get a coffee grinder, buy good coffee, realize you don't need sweetener/cream in your coffee if it's actually good. I realize you're unemployeed, but these are relatively cheap and it'll change the way you drink coffee.

I have attorney skills. And i do have a coffee grinder, but I still really like my cream and sugar :\
Oh, I heard an ad calling for US Census bureau takers, paying them 16 bucks an hour. Part time hours evenings/weekends. I'm pretty sure you need to go door to door. Is this safe? I have a feeling I would need a gun to do this kind of job.

You realize that Simutronics isn't hiring right now, don't you?

rofl. I knew that question would come up. Not all day! At this point, I've applied to so many places, my sources for jobs (school job board, etc) just don't have any new openings right now. I spend some time following up on some job apps, and apply to other jobs if I find them, and in between, I play a little GS.

Yes, there's PB with his "You can't get hired in a 10% unemployment atmosphere, You're doing it wrong!"
Thanks PB, the master of squeezing 15,375,000 people into 325,000 jobs. How do you do it? I'm amazed you fixed the unemployment in this country with ignoring simple mathematics, I wouldn't have thought to do that.
I was unemployed for a year once, with plenty of cash saved from working all my adult life previously.
It was identical to that guys life from About A Boy.
Workout, GS, Coffee, Porn, Booze, Play pool and repeat every single day.
Those were special times.

Ah yes.. here's the guy that spends an hour a day looking for a job....
If you are spending less than 40 hours per week looking for a job.. then you aren't looking for a job very hard.
Like I advised you before Deathravin.. give me your specifics and I'll find you a job in your area.

Splenda is a real retarded thing to ingest independent of using it in coffee.
Why would anyone ingest Splenda independent of using it in coffee?
Don't try and tell me people put that shit on their toast or cereal..

People put it in tea, bake with it, all kinds of stupid shit. No matter what the medium, using Splenda is a great way to make your body a sad body.

Finding the job openings is one thing. Getting them to interview you and then actually make a serious offer of employment is another.
My husband has been unemployed for over a year now, though he hasn't been looking too hard for work since his status lets him stay home with our daughter and alleviates the worry of finding quality child care that we could actually afford. (A friend of mine has turned down job offers because the money she would make would end up going right back out to pay someone to care for her son while both she and her husband work.)
The thing that's killing us is that I'm currently underemployed. Which means that in addition to dealing with the frustration of searching for full-time jobs, sending out resumes and inquiries, and then either hearing nothing back or learning that they're shady propositions, I'm now trying to pull stuff together to go back to school and actually get a degree. Because all the work I've actually done and goals accomplished and skills acquired mean diddly since I don't have a piece of paper saying I can sit and spend half a day doing busy work.

Employed... but underemployed here. I'm still working but with 40% unemployment in my industry, it's pretty brutal. I've never seen anything like it, and neither has anyone else I know. Fortunately I've got a particular area of knowledge and some valued credentials to go with it. At some point soon though, they'll have to stop paying me to show up when there's only about 1.5 hours of billable work to do each week. Currently, we have laid off 25% of staff, and everyone remaining is on mandatory unpaid hours reduction of 1 day a week. So far I've kissed the price of a decent car goodbye, but hey, some pay is better than no pay.

While I understand the difficulty of finding a job now, I have to agree with PB here. Looking for a job is a full-time job. If you feel as though you've exhausted all your options, look again.

Exactly. Find something that will tide you over for a year. As the economy improves (lawlz), you'll be more likely to find a job that fits you better.
Also better to have your resume reflect a year of working any job than a year not working at all. Regarding your future applications once.. heh.. the economy improves.

Hey man, go for it.
I recently moved to Minnetonka MN in search of work in October, and unlike Vegas it actually has jobs to apply for. So subtracting a major family issue, I have been looking for 7 weeks and have been on 3 interviews (as opposed to the zero call backs in 6 months in Vegas with their 13% rate). So I'm fairly confident I'll find something.
I have a few current bites, and have another interview with another employment agency who wants to get me temporary contract IT work, which is fine. I like those jobs sometimes as you can get a lot of diverse experience in a short amount of time.
I take home $10 an hour from unemployment (and am currently financially screwed), so just need something over $14.50 an hour gross and I'll fly at it. But if it's not in an IT field, I will just stay until I find an IT job.
So here's my work experience from one of my more general resumes. I could just check everything off the spreadsheet so it would give you all the targeted data too, but that would be somewhat redundant and very long.
Wish PC had better formatting options, it looks much prettier printed... But I'd rather keep at least the semblance of anonymity.

I'm really annoyed w/ a friend right now because she has this whole, "I won't do anything beneath me" attitude. FFS, you have bills, just get a job! It doesn't have to be a career.

Well let me ask you a question, Allereli.
You're an employer. You need an employee for a specific job.
You are getting thousands of resumes in for your single job. Are you going to hire one that you feel is going to ditch you to go back to his chosen profession the second he can? or find one that will stay with you even after the recession is over?
I've had call-backs from companies I would have certainly worked for and things I've done in the past. They looked at my resume and after speaking with me, and hearing I was somewhat overqualified, gave me the whole 'we'll be in touch' and went on to the next guy.
I've had call backs from companies where the job was outside my resume's career path, I spiffied it up to sound like it was more in their field, and out of hundreds of applications I sent out like that, I got two callbacks, and they just said it wasn't the right fit, and went on to a more perfectly suited guy.
With such a huge pool, you can take a little bit of time and find the perfect person for the job, be it a Pizza delivery driver, or an executive vice president over game controllers.
I agree it's stupid to have the "I won't do anything beneath me" attitude, but to be fair, even if he did look for jobs he would do just to pay his bills, they probably wouldn't hire him (just like they haven't hired me).

You might want to delete so much personal information from your work history. Don't post your resume on this forum.
It doesn't have my name, phone number etc. Just my places of employment. And that information is already on Monster, Careerbuilder, Thimamajob, and countless company website databases (I should know, I have the scam Indian phone calls to prove it.)
Why would I feel iffy about putting information on a forum that I e-mail to every tom, dick, and harry that says they have a job opening? You guys could probably figure out who I am, which isn't too hard since I posted under my actual last name (fairly unique) on the officials for years. I really don't care.
Hey, maybe somebody will stumble upon the info here and get me a job. At this point, I'd rather deal with the identity theft than the unemployment any longer.

If you're not hiring people with a year gap in their resume, you're going to be looking for quite a while. In this recession, most resume's you see will have at least 3 months.

Drayal already said this, but I wanted to re-iterate (since we're part of the same gang, you know): there was something on NPR the other day about how damaging 'blank spots' on the resume are. It's actually preferable to fill blank spaces with jobs that may be out of your chosen career field or underneath you, rather than leaving gaping holes.

Times are hard right now. Just look for a job you can tolerate just to get you working. If companies are downsizing, they're not going to be looking for IT, especially customer support. They'll get by with very few. Unless you're a software engineer or network specialist.

I'm the one that finally convinced the executives to take admin rights off the damn laptops. I could only try to remove spyware so many times in a day. I was glad to hear the trainer eventually got tired of the manager's (Keith) sexual and verbal harassment she not only got him fired, but sued him into oblivion.
But that was after I left. I really liked that job, it wasn't too stressful. And as I look back on it now, and I'd take a masochistic, harassing boss over having to deal with the politics of the executive decision-making process any day.
ANYWAY.
I'd sure take anybody up on help... I'm... There isn't a word for how frustrated I am to be honest.
As for the Resume itself, the Spherion part doesn't typically change much, as that's pretty much all there was to the job. But the GCW part was so dynamic I could have a 5 page job description of what I did and it still would be incomplete, so it gets pretty long. I'll make you up a resume with all the specific stuff checked too so you can check over that if you're willing. Shouldn't be more than a couple pages.
Thanks for the help!, I'll get right on that.

Ya, I wish I could afford to go to school and get a comp sci degree. I'd love to be a programmer, and for what I've done in the past I have a knack for it. If I had known it was going to be this long, I would have been in school the whole time. Every day I wake up and think that today is going to be the day I get a job. It's very mentally demanding to be disappointed every day.
But as I said, it's only been a few weeks that I've been in Minnesota I have just in the last month or so began to branch out and broaden my job catching net. I can't begin to tell you just how few jobs there were in Vegas, I find and apply for at least 10x the jobs here than I could there.
I was actually considering going back to pizza delivery since it has mostly PM hours (gives me time to keep looking and go on interviews) and typically pays around 14-15 an hour with tips. Plus it would get me mad snow driving skills, which would come in handy. I'd probably be glad for the green pepper smell again. LOL.

It's not as easy as that when you have children.
Settling for any job doesn't necessarily mean more income. Child care is expensive, and for many people, they have to find that perfect job just for the salary. Otherwise, the money that comes in goes straight to childcare so there's no real net gain. I've encountered it previously when the company I was working for got bought by another larger company and laid off something like 30-40% of the emplyees (from the original). Asile's quoted post below illustrates it too.
The kid scenario doesn't obviously apply to everyone, but the blanket statement of 'any job is better than no job' isn't quite true.

If you're looking for a job outside your field, or applying for just any job, including low end ones, you can't send the same resume that you would for a job you would kill to have. If you're trying for a job you're overqualified for, dumb down your resume. Highlight secondary and terciary skills that might apply better to the job you're applying for.

Oh yeah! With the last full-time office job I had, I would do so many different things within a week that I could take more than half a page listing just my normal job responsibilities, never mind the special stuff I accomplished or the things I did only once a year. So I keep 2 or 3 copies of my resume available with job duties listed out to highlight skills depending on the type of position I'm going for (customer services, office administration, sales).
Oh, by the way, if you're having trouble finding work in your field--especially you IT folks!--look into volunteering. Non-profits are really hurting these days, and you'd be surprised at where they can use help. Or maybe check with schools and see if they need any help in their computer labs and such, or classroom assistants. The major non-profit I teach part-time for is really grateful for all the volunteers we're getting in the office now, especially since a lot of positions have been downsized and yet they're expected to maintain the same level of service as 2 years ago (if not more!).

Yes, to get my PT job, I had to leave off my degrees, and then I got callbacks. Target straight up told me I wasn't qualified (when I applied with my degrees). ROFL!!!!!
Question for you about Target. What job did you apply for? I've worked with people at Target, and have been told they apply a personality screening methodology to their hiring process, and that it screens out a lot of qualified people because they don't fit the "Target Profile". This might explain why they hemorrage cash: they're more interested in the "young and the beautiful" than the qualified and capable. They also sing songs at work. Creepy.

I forget, at the time, I had just taken the bar exam, and needed any job I could get. I think I applied for basically all the available jobs - cashier, floor clerk, stock boy, whatever. I didn't have any sales exp, but I had my full resume in the app - with law firm experience, and work through college, and my other nice extracurriculars, like president of a sports club, various hiring committees at my university, and diversity fluff things since I am biracial. I also have a 3.XX GPA, which I figured is over most minimums. I am a pretty normal person, no criminal record, no debt, no judgments, and pretty affable and a team player. I'm only 26, and look young, and somewhat attractive. From what you said, I am surprised they didn't hire me! But who knows.

I think I can include myself in this thread. I dont have a real job anymore. Primarily because I refuse to do what I'm good at, ie. what I've been doing my whole life. I just HATE doing it . Super emo, I know (QQ). Odd jobs ftw.
