I saw something like that over Vegas at dusk a few years ago. I was pretty freaked. It was (of course) just a missile launch, but it was pretty eerie.

I could certainly see that being a malfunctioning missile, but usually they have self-destruct mechanisms if they even get slightly off course they just auto-terminate. Seems strange that they would let it be out of control like that if they didn't want it to be.

Well considering it was Russian, the missile likely lost funding about 300ft into the air and any further control (auto or no) probably dissolved into Communism.
