Instruments - Brawling

Ok, from what I've read in past threads, two-handed instruments can be used in place of a brawling weapon to aid with defenses, and apparently bonuses to some spellsongs like 1030.

Does just about any two handed instrument work?
Does play skill factor in... ie, do you need to be a master/apprentice of that instrument class?
Does the quality of the instrument factor in... untuned, master/average?
