Had a quick question about Runestaffs. When I inspected my Runestaff, it told me that I needed two handed weapon training to use it effectively. But I heard that you could get a defense bonus with a runestaff. The lady I spoke to in the game said that in order to get the defense benefits for the Runestaff, I would need to train in magic item use as well as brawling. But why when I assess it does it say I need to train in two handed weapons? If I train in two handed weapons wil I get the same kind of defense benefits for it? I am totally confused.....

Well, if you wanted to bonk things on the head with your runestaff, you would train THW, but I don't suggest it, they're not very good bonkers.
Your runestaff defense is taken from your total number of magical ranks (AS, MIU, FA, MMC, SMC, Spells, Lores). The minimun number of magical ranks to achieve runestaff DS is 8, more is better. Brawl does provide some DS during open handed casting, but that's separate from runestaff DS.
There is nothing inherantly significant about training MIU for runestaff defense except that it counts towards the magical ranks needed.
1x MIU, AS, MMC, SMC = 4 magical ranks
2x Spells, Spell Aim = 4 magical ranks
1x Lores = 1 magical rank
Total: 9 magical ranks
More 'x' in anything just adds to the DS.

Runestaves.
I couldn't let it go. I tried. I couldn't let it go.

The reason it inspects as a THW is because the runestaff itself is a THW. However, when used in your right hand, it activates a mechanic that gives you DS based on magical skills.
THW training and magical training do NOT combine DS.
Brawling training does not add to runestaff DS as it requires an empty right hand (or a brawling weapon).

I'd like to offer my condolences. Now don't spells crit better open handed though? Wouldn't holding a rune-stave mess up the crit of the spell? Or with a rune-stave, is it special in the sense that it doesn't effect the outcome of the crit? Even when holding it in your right hand?

You're talking about the bonus to spells that can be CHANNELED (and are channeled versus casted).
There's three factors to the bonus...
STANCE (more offensive, better the bonus)
1 EMPTY HAND (so holding a runestaff would keep the left hand empty)
2 EMPTY HANDS
You can also use wands with runestaves with no affect on your DS, if that hasn't already been mentioned. Sorry I'm lazy!

So empty hand and empty hands give the same bonus as eachother?

No, they give different bonuses. 2 empty hands is a better bonus than 1 empty hand.
It's just that it doesn't matter WHICH hand is empty for the 1 empty hand scenario.

Good macros.
Stow weapon, wear shield, stance off, channel, pasue 3, stance def, ready weapon, remove shield.
Works great, and it introduces stance dancing to sorcerers
