View Full Version : Thanksgiving

My family and I drove to Eastern Washington a couple weeks ago for my dad's birthday party. His 80th birthday party. Most of you probably have no idea that my dad has nearly died like, oh, two dozen separate times, over half of which occurred this year alone, so I hope you all will join me in an appreciative FUCK YEAH to that.

*this is where I should insert a kickass picture of my dad holding his youngest grandson while surrounded by family and friends, with him looking healthy and vibrant while laughing into the camera*

*here are some crickets instead, because I didn't take a single actual fucking photo all fucking weekend. Fuck.*

Anyhoo, the strangest part of the weekend was at one point realizing that we were surrounded by my parents friends, all people I've met before, but only in the context of hospital waiting rooms. I'm not surprised that my parents have made a fuck ton of friends since moving there, my folks are very gregarious people and these are the friends who would show up to visit with my mom while we paced the hospital hallways, stared at the vending machines, and choked down lukewarm cafeteria coffee. They'd come in, usually bearing gifts of plants or candy, make jokes, cheerfully compliment the view from my dad's window, even if it's just the parking lot, and offer rides and food for my mom, and hugs for me. One friend of theirs even showed me photos of my son that he still had on his camera phone, taken last January in another hospital room, right before my dad's heart surgery. My parents next door neighbor was there too, a woman I've probably spoken a dozen words with, even though I know she's the one responsible for keeping my parents plants watered, mail collected, and grass mowed whenever crisis strikes.

I chatted with them all, flushing whenever another nice older lady or man told me how beautiful the kids were, and how lovely I looked. I think they were mostly shocked that I looked so different from the usual red-eyed, worried hospital version of myself who had driven in after midnight the night before. I guess I set the standard pretty low previously.

Later, after cake, one woman looked across the room at my dad and said with tears in her eyes what I think all of us were thinking: I can't believe he's still here. I'm so very glad he's still here. I didn't know what else to do, so I hugged her and thanked her. For what, she asked.

Oh, jesus, where to even start.

Grandfathers rock. Your kid is lucky to get time with him. I only got to meet one of mine, and he died relatively early for me. But the memories are all pretty awesome, so it's always a priority for me that my kid gets to know my dad.

That's really cool that your parents have friends that you know will help them out when you're not around.

(FUCK YEAH?)

Hmm, you were wishing death upon my mom and me (http://forum.gsplayers.com/showpost.php?p=1013907&postcount=40). I feel like I should say something about your dad, but that would just be wrong. What I do hope is that your husband cheats on you, contracts HIV, chlamydia, and genital warts, then gives it to you, specifically the warts on your anus. While your short time to live starts ticking down, you can sit in discomfort at the puss dripping between your legs and the permanent hemorrhoids that your husband so gratefully gave you, and finally have a reason to be the bitch that you are.

Awesome. You mean she was rude to you in that thread where you insulted her in the very first post, and then you overreacted and she called you on it? Also, she said she hoped the flu "kicked you and your mom's ass", not that you actually die from it. Stop being a drama queen.

I've never gotten the impression that she's a bitch.

Grats about your Dad. I hate when people say something like glad your X, but lemme tell you about what happened to me... but I'm going to anyway. My Dad had a heart attack, major heart surgery and just yesterday gall bladder surgery all in the last 2 months. I'm thankful every day that he's still here and I don't know what I'd do without him.

Sincerely, I'm glad your father is doing well and wish you only the best. Let's hear from you at Christmas with the same great news :)

As selfish as I am regarding my family, at this point I wish God would take my grandfather. The poor thing is so sick, so frail, so drastically unhappy that I just wish for that suffering to end. I'd miss him tremendously, but I just know in my heart that this isn't how he wants to live the last days of his life. I know I'll be saying goodbye to him this weekend for the last time, and I'm okay with that now. I've spent all year coming to terms with that.

That said, I'm glad that you have had more time with your dad. Letting go is hard, so everyone needs to have their time to come to grips with it before it happens.

My great grandmother is 97. She was just recently diagnosed with cancer that's spread to most major organ systems and doesn't have long to live. Now 97 is a ripe old age and it's a wonder she lasted this long as a healthy person, but it's still a sad thing no matter what. Death is funny that way- no matter how long a person lives, how great their life was, the end is still a sad moment, even if it does mean the end of significant suffering. Just the way things are I guess.

I'm in the same place with my uncle, who is my inspiration for everything. Mean old irish man, vietnam vet, sharp wit and he is slowly being eaten away by diabetes. When I got home from the Army I found him living in a shack with no running water, he hadnt eaten in days. Veterans Affairs pretended they had never heard of him and have been denying him his pay for years. So I took pictures of his conditions, wrangled a lawyer and fought for his benefits for half a year. They finally gave it all to him( including backpay) LAST WEEK and suddenly a million mysterious relatives show up at our estate for god knows what. I havent seen any of them in more than a decade. They claim to be here for thanksgiving. In the meantime my uncle is in the hospital with another round of kidney complications. And miserable. Do they visit him? No. I have his Power of Attorney and any leeching relatives that come along with that.

Yeah. I'm jaded about Thanksgiving this year. :(

I hate when people say something like glad your X, but lemme tell you about what happened to me... but I'm going to anyway.

I honestly believe that about 90% of the time people are telling a story of something that happened to them, their "listeners" arent really listening, they are thinking of a story they can tell which is much better, but involves them.

On topic: Ah, fuck it...why break the habit of a lifetime.

My mom is 15 years younger than my dad but I was still a pretty late arrival for her. I've spent most of my life having strangers mistake my siblings for my parents and my parents for my grandparents.

I'd like to say that I had something really offensive in there and Kranar had to make it family friendly...or something like that, however that isnt the case...it's more to do with the fact that Wross was previously called Wrossartley, and in a recent discussion, (i.e. in the thread he linked) he or someone else disclosed that his username was his full name in real life. His name has since miraculously changed to Wross and so I believe Kranar changed the quote in my post so it has the new (not full) name as being quoted.

Of course, as the delicate little flower has posted in excess of 1200 times, Kranar has a hell of a job if he is going to change all of them, but it is a nice gesture anyway.

he or someone else disclosed that his username was his full name in real life.
I was wondering why he changed it, and that was the only conclusion I could come up with.. he stupidly used his full name and now he's drawing even more attention to it by changing it. It's especially futile because you can just look at his profile and see "formerly known as".

Stupid is as stupid does.

I'm about to enter that particular category by asking this but what kind of things that could happen from knowing someone's name would present a risk so much you'd hide it?
I think most people I know use their real name on Facebook, Myspace, AIM, MSN and sometimes e-mail.

I'm just curious. Oh and I think I've done it here myself like twenty times D:
