In all seriousness you can't assume that dog is aware he's risking his life to save the other. Infact he may be taking it to the side of the road to eat it.
You could say that, I guess or we can attribute it to anthropomorphism.
I like to think it's a dude helping out his mate. Who'll ever know.

Then the dog catcher took them both to a shelter where no one claimed them and they were both put down by lethal injection.

From what I read to the side on that link is that there is a massive stray animal problem there (lack of the animal-friendly organizations that we take for granted here?).
