LA MARQUE, Texas – A man blamed a low-flying pelican and a dropped cell phone for his veering his million-dollar sports car off a road and into a salt marsh near Galveston. The accident happened about 3 p.m. Wednesday on the frontage road of Interstate 45 northbound in La Marque, about 35 miles southeast of Houston.

The Lufkin, Texas, man told of driving his luxury, French-built Bugatti Veyron when the bird distracted him, said La Marque police Lt. Greg Gilchrist. The motorist dropped his cell phone, reached to pick it up and veered off the road and into the salt marsh. The car was half-submerged in the brine about 20 feet from the road when police arrived.

Gilchrist said he doesn't know if the car was salvageable, but in his words, "Salt water isn't good for anything." He says the man, whose identity hasn't been released, was not injured.

A 2006 Bugatti Veyron was recently offered for sale in Jonesboro, Ark., for $1.25 million

Clearly this asshole didn't deserve the car. If I had the chance to drive a bugatti veryron I wouldn't take my eyes off the road for even split second, seriously I'd ignore a naked Natalie Portman in my passenger seat at speed, not to say I wouldn't quickly get myself to a speed where I could not ignore said godess, but no way I'd drive into a marsh with an excuse less than a hummer.

I don't know why he'd lie about it, crashing a supercar because you saw a bird is a perfectly cromulent excuse in my book. Sometimes I'll go for MINUTES without seeing a bird while I'm outside, and every time one shows up I freak out and start jumping around.

That car is my favourite car ever made. It has a button that turns it into an aeroplane and makes you swallow your teeth.. basically.

Having hit a wild turkey driving at 90+, and yes wild turnkeys actually do fly, I can feel for this guy. On the plus side, unless the bird hits the nose/grill they just tend to roll over the car due to aerodynamics and whatnot, other then a greasy looking smear on the top of the windshield there was no real damage to the car. Cant say the same for the bird though.
