I don't really ever watch hockey. But I am watching the news, like I said in another thread, and they just mentioned a player who was not only banned for the rest of the year, but also forfeited the rest of his salary for the year and was also fined $250,000.
I've seen the clip. The man he punched came away with a broken neck and a concussion. The clip also shows another player jumping on the accused's back almost immediately and throwing a punch. How is one worse than another? Either you make fighting in hockey legal, or you ban everyone who throws a punch for an entire year. Because this one player's attack ended with a broken neck is an unfortunate accident.

As I understand it, the player who was attacked in this instance was attacked because he took another player out last year (I think it was last year). I think the PTB in hockey are starting to take a look at the violence, since players are being seriously injured.
Hockey has always been a violent game. It is not going to be easy to tackle the problem this late in the game, I'd say.

It's one reason I don't watch it. It is fun to play, but what they get away with in the NHL make me sick.

The worst aspect of this situation is the fact that the guy hit him unsuspecting. Hit him from behind and rode his body into the ice, leading with the guys head\neck. Another really important fact was that the coach had placed a "bounty" on the guys head before the game. Face it. Hockey sucks.

Fuck the media vultures who only pay attention to hockey when someone gets injured.
They play 80 games a season, yanno. And all the teams have played about 65 so far, and this is THE FIRST TIME hockey has made it into mainstream media this season.
Imagine what the image of Basketball would be if the only time it slipped into the media was to mention that Kobe raped a girl, or Jason Williams killed someone, or Allen IVerson beat his wife. Instead, basketball is treated with kid's gloves.

He didn't fight anyone, he cheapshotted someone and slammed their face into the ice. It wasn't a hockey fight.
Not only that, but it was pre-meditated. That Moore guy who got his neck broken legally hit one of Bertuzzi's teammates last game, injuring him. Bertuzzi said there would be retribution. He tought about what he was going to do, and he blindsided someone and broke their neck.
The teammate was just helping his injured teammate, nothing wrong with that.

There is a difference between Bertuzzi and the player that jumped on his back. Bertuzzi came up from behind of the player and suckerpunched him then forced his head to the ice. The player who jumped on his back was more in retaliation. At least he was retaliating to something that happened in that game as opposed to Bertuzzi who was retaliating to something that happened earlier in the season.
The punishment he got was just. When you are in a game like that and you see a teammate cheapshoted your emotions tend to rise a bit. Granted Bertuzzi crossed the line with his retaliation. Overall im not surprised that Moore was targetted.
edit: this sort of thing also does not happen often. Its bad to say that the 1% of the fights in hockey that are horrible are the norm. Look at the Flyers/Ottowa game. 419 minutes of fighting and nobody was banned or fined. I am pretty sure half of the fights were on the Senator coaches orders.

This is the garbage that I was talking about in the other thread.
This guy came from behind and sucker punched him and then rode him into the ice. The thing to remember, is if he had not been injured like that, a sucker punch from out of nowhere would only get a penalty and to me that is just no longer acceptable.
The culture that exists in the NHL at present makes it ok to do things to other players that would land you in jail on the street and the thing is it plays NO part in the actual game.
Punching and hitting with the stick should be an instant suspension with increasing penalties for each occurence.
I loved hockey, I played in intramurals in high school even getting enough friends into it that we had an all girls team one year and trying (if failing sadly) at ice hockey a few times.
I used to go to games often and still am a devils fan, but don't go or watch games like I used to as I am just fed up with the needless violence.
Please allow me to reiterate, I LOVE hockey, and I want other people to come to apreciate it as I do, but lets be honest, its dying as a fan based sport and I say that if we could get rid of the fighting we would have a better chance to pull in the masses.

Instigators are a part of sports.
Violence is a part of sports.
One thing that can be said of sports is that it is meant to evoke strong emotions in the people who watch it. And frankly, hockey is meant to evoke anger, as well as awe, as well as beauty.
People die in NASCAR, yanno. Go persecute them for having such a violent sport, where people go at suicidal speeds at unsafe distances from each other, and try and nudge past people.

Hey, Teemu Selanne won me $500 bucks back in 1993. I got into a hockey fantasy league where I got the guy with my 24th pick, and that was the year he shattered the record for goal scoring by a rookie. I rampaged straight to the title.

I have watched Bertuzzi his whole career. He is a well known dirty player. This is no way surprised me what he did. I watched some of the game but missed that part of the action.
I have a few simple solutions for these problems. I wrote a big article on the Marty McSorley action a few years back. First off, the government should not get involved at all! It only deteriates the sport. The players no the risk they take out there. This is no different than what can happen in anysport. Remember when Clemns hit Piazza in the head or when the official hit Brown in the eye with the flag that he was throwing at him? This is something that needs to be kept in the game. The team should suspend Bertuzzi. Then the NHL should suspend Bertuzzi (more to fit the punishment) and fine both team and player.
What Bertuzzi did was cheap. Hockey has turned though so much on players. When they brought in the istigator rule, it changed the style of play totally. Naslund, who recieved the hit from Moore, could have never happened if he had to think twice about getting his ass beat. I was listening to Englom today on the radio and he made the point of what is more important to a player, being fined, or get his head smashed in by some big goone in front of 20k people live and thousands of viewers? So basically if this guy knew that some tough guy was going to beat him up for laying out and hurting the other teams leading goal scorer and all around athlete, this problem may have never happened.
Bertuzzi attacked the guy because that was the only way he could get retribution. The guy wouldn't fight him straight up and he had to prove some sort of point (being the leader of his team) by laying out the other guy who hurt his player. So he did what he had too do. The punishment seems a little harsh to me considering fighting is part of the game. It was truely disgustin to watch, but that guy should have known better then to even turn his head for a second. Not to mention the coach should have been all over the match ups and never allowed his player on the ice when Bertuzzi, who once again is known for being dirty, is on the ice.

I am sorry you had this exp. Shit happens. Kids see all this sex and cursin on tv now anyways, so truely, what is the point? Your point on college hockey is not very good. I live by 2 schools who are in the CCHL (which is like the Big Ten in hockey) and they can't even be compared to professional hockey. Could you imagine a Big Ten school folding? Well that is what is happening with the Findlay hockey team. Bowling Green isn't very far away from it either do to their lack of attention of the sport. College hockey is just not exciting. Too much icing and offsides. They do not use the two line pass because it opens up the game. But 90% of the passes thrown down are just icing calls because of automatic icing. Not a fun sport to watch.
Hockey is the only sport (major) that fighting someone is part of the game. You cursing is just a perspective of how you enjoy the game. Cursing happens at all sporting events. Trust me, I know. I live by Detroit, and I am a Browns fan. I go to tons of Indians games. Being mean is just part of the game. I am a high school umpire. I enjoy still being a part of the game. But I look at it as being an official when someone yells at me, I am ok with that. Because at least they are tryin to participate in America's national pastime. They want to be involved like I am. Root on their team. Umpires are bad guys in most peoples eyes. I am ok with that. My point is people get caught up in the moment and its all how you deal with it. If you want to yell every bad word there is in the book, thats up to you. If you want to stand up and clap thats upto you. If you want to turn your head because you don't like violence, then you shouldn't be there. Sports have violence in them. Plain and simple.

Well do you know what the state tells us to do as umpires. Do not touch the kid. Call to the coach and take numbers. It is not our responsibilty to enforce the situation when it happens. We are relied on to prevent it as best as we can and it is our duty to report. But we don't break them up. Some kids you cannot control. And if you try to control it...I might as well hand over the keys to my house. Cause some dad in the stands will sue me.

You got that right Lalana, if I want o see a good fight i'll go watch a pro do it.
And about the tears as well. What hypocrisy. You came up behind another person clearly not wanting to fight and hit them from behind and then jumped on top of him, riding him down to the ice with both their weight as the fact that he was falling to the ice on his own was not sufficient. But....his tear accompanied "I had no intention of hurting you" was just laughable.

I saw the speech, and I thought it was completely genuine.
Look, in hockey, the players, and the fans, recognize that it is a violent, physical game. And they accept that. They even enjoy it. I'm sure the players do to some extent as well. A local bruiser who has his own radio piece on a local morning show talks constantly about how he and the other "designated bruiser" will always talk about when they wanna go at it...."How about now?" "Nah, let's wait it out a bit..." Hockey is also very territorial, especially around goalies. I remember, if anyone even came close to touching Dominik Hasek, they were pounded on relentlessly. If they ran into him on purpose? Yes, there would be retaliation.
One thing we forget when playing sports with all the protective equipment, is that people can and do get hurt. Bertuzzi was retaliating for something that happened earlier in the year. While he did it with intent, I do not think it was malicious. To break a guy's neck and have him bleeding on the ice in pools like that, no one is looking to do that.
I remember when Malarchuk got his neck sliced by a frickin' skate one time. People say he was about 5 minutes from dying out there on the ice. Do you think us Sabres fans were going, "Damn, blood, that's good stuff. More violence!"?

You speak as if I know nothing about hockey. As if I am not a fan. As if I never played.
The fact is the opposite is true. Its as if you think only complete pacifists or those completely ignorant of hockey might take issue with the fighting that occurs.
I have stated that in prior posts to counter exactly that sort of assumption. I have been a fan of the Devils since I was eleven. I have put in my dues to be acknowledged as at the least a fan.
To say that the equipment that the playes wear is to protect them in a fight is just not correct. They wear padding and helmets because they can be checked into the boards by a 200+ pound player skating at nearly 20 miles per hour. Or they may get hit by a slapshot traveling at 90+ miles per hour. I see both of these as legitimate risks of playing a hard game.
I can not and will not ever accept someone punching another player as simply part of the game. It is not accepted in football, basketball or baseball, all sports which, I should add, enjoy a MUCH larger following than hockey. And i would love to see any of you here call Warren Sapp or Kenyon Martin a pussy.
And lastly the saddest thing is the question you posed about the player getting sliced open by a skate. I am pretty sure that the players all felt bad, but you know darn well that there were some fans there who just got even more wound up seeing that blood.
If you think that the ridiculous level of the fighting has not played into helping the fan base of hockey erode and place the sport as a whole in jeopardy for its very existance I think you are taking an extremely shortsighted view of the situation.
Two women were at a bar. One looked at the other and said: "You know 80 percent of all men think the best way to end an argument is to make love."
"Well," said the other woman, "that will certainly revolutionize the game of hockey!"

Some kids you cannot control. And if you try to control it...I might as well hand over the keys to my house. Cause some dad in the stands will sue me.
So you do nothing at all? Let the kid fight, and then he stays in the game? Nothing happens to him?

I love hockey. I've loved it a long, long time. It freaking pisses me off that hockey's a joke. It gets on the news when there's another beating or stick incident or when Clint Malarchuk gets his throat cut on live TV or shit like that. Other than that the media laughs at hockey.
I'M FUCKING SICK OF IT.
