I decided to try Lich. first I tried the method and file from this page.
http://fluffycow.comoj.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=17
when running the command lich.rb --install nothing happened. when I looked in the log it said something about not being able to access the registry.
so I installed it by using the V3 new method from this page
http://www.lichproject.com/wiki/Download
it seems to be running ok, I was able to launch gemstone with the SGE and stormfront. didnt really try anything other than that.
my concern is the second method i tried appears to be running an older version of lich. Is it possible to issue a command and have lich update itself in place? if not how should I go about updating or should I bother even updating it?

Backup any scripts you have and uninstall Lich.
Go back to http://www.lichproject.com/wiki/Download
Go to the V4 slightly less lazy way. Follow the directions.

I'm not sure how, but we really need to make sure that everybody coming to the PC Lich forum gets funneled towards this link: http://www.lichproject.com/wiki/Download
There is still an inordinant amount of confusion as to how/where to get lich, and which version is the correct one.

That's because the above stickied "Homepage" of Lich has not changed still with the new link

Who needs to be contacted to change that? Is Kranar even still around?

Ok, I tried the above and all seems to be going well. I can get the Lich game entry window to show. click on the "Game Entry" tab and fill it in select the game and character choose stormfront and click play but nothing happens. stormfront does not start.
I can go to the gemstone website and start stormfront so stormfront seems to be working. any idea's

Look in your lich folder for lich_debug.txt. If you can't find that, look in the lich/temp/ folder for the newest debug-<numbers here>.txt. Post both if you can find them.

When in doubt, reinstall the Simu Launcher (http://www.play.net/software/lnchInst.exe).
The error messages, rather than indicating the real problem, indicate that the error is in the error reporting function in registry.rb. So.. it failed to report the real error, but the end result is about the same. It failed to read the registry and find the Simu Launcher. However.. the error messages are from the install tab. Not from actually trying to install or uninstall, but from trying to show the current state. There are quite a few things that can screw up the launch order. In this case, I'd assume you have used SpiffyJr's installer, which probably got rid of the registry keys for the Launcher when you uninstalled. It's a little confusing that you can launch Stormfront from the website, but I suppose that could be from the browser having it's own entry for what to do with .sal files, instead of using the missing file association.
Anyway, try reinstalling the launcher. If that doesn't work, I'll come up with a new idea.

That's definately a registry issue. It's the same problem I had with my new PortableApps installer which was fixed by correcting a bad registry value.
