I think it being for sale in the pawnshop implies that they didn't lose it, they were just too stupid to keep it and/or have it sung to.

yeah considered that but then someone else might have found it and sold it for a quick turn of silver.

Just wanted to make sure it wasn't a piece someone was missing before I hand it off to one of my youngsters.

Also possible someone meant to sell the shield they found but accidently sold their own shield but... doubt it. Score for you.
