My brother gave me some fun music composition software, so I decided to try it out last night. Here's what I came up with as my first composition ever. The title is "Niima's Return." (Yes, I borrowed the name 'Niima.' I used up all my creativity on musical part)

First, a little write-up to set the place and mood of the piece:

Tablets have been found at a recently-discovered grotto at the submerged Atlantis site. The chamber immediately causes one to feel awed by the mysticism of Atlantean technology, being filled with clusters of luminous blue crystals and with an elaborate carved stone gate at the center of the chamber. The discovered records have been mostly translated, and appear to describe an event that may well have led to the cataclysmic event that, according to Plato and other philosophers, sunk the island nation deep into the ocean so many millennia ago.

Atlantean engineers had apparently stumbled upon some sort of phenomenon that allowed them to see through to another world via crystals charged with some type of energy they were able to harness and channel (the properties and source of this energy is still completely unknown). Upon seeing the beautiful, otherworldly dimension through the crystals, Atlantean engineers became obsessed with discovering a way to actually travel there. Incidentally, this caused them to lose focus on their war efforts, and is partially blamed for the Atlanteans' defeat at Athens just before the island sank into the sea.

There were several accidents involved with the research - many proving fatal to participants and destructive to the area around them. Still, the research and experiments continued, and at last the Atlanteans were rewarded - they had managed to bring a single otherworldly flower - along with some of the soil it was rooted in - through to their own world. This flower was given to Niima, a young Atlantean princess, who planted it at the center of her favorite garden and cared for it like a mother does for her child.

Encouraged by their success, a gate was constructed, encrusted with the energy-charged crystals (greater details are not found in the records available). This was done in a cavern deep underground, in the case of another potentially destructive accident. Particularly excited was Niima, who wished to travel through the gate to gather more flowers for her garden. The last record describes the excitement surrounding the scheduled activation and use of the crystal gateway for the next day, but nothing more.

Not bad. Reminds me of a track from Star Control II that I can't remember.

Youtube's updating is messed up, most of the time the views don't show up instantly (if ever).

What software are you using? I've been messing around with Pro Tools and some cheap inputs (turn tables, drum machine, and metric tons of samples.) Fun to play around with.

I used Propellerhead's "Reason." I barely scratched the surface of the tools it provides. My brother (a very talented musician/sound technician) was showing me all the different things you can do with it, and I was completely lost most of the time even with his "quick overview" of the features.

A neat thing about it is that when you add 'devices' they show up graphically as if installed in a rack along with all the knobs and buttons and whatnot. Here are some screenshots:

You can even look at the back of the rack as well, with all the cables and stuff:

It was a lot more than I expected when I asked him if he knew of any software I could use for my foray into music composition.

Reason is great if you're not really external. It's tougher if you wanna add real-world devices into the mix. I wasn't a fan of protools, either. I used sonar in my studio, since we had a shit-ton of synths and such.

And mellow out with those tube effects at :58. I was enjoying the ambiance, and then I basically got hit in the face with a laser beam. The voice is nice, though.

It's supposed to be a sudden occurrence that shatters the ambiance. It might be a touch louder than it should be, though.

I'm curious to know what people envision when they listen to it after reading the little blurb I wrote up. Most people that have listened to it are partially right about what the "laser beam sound" and boom are, but are thinking about the wrong time and event.
