It's not against policy to have a name that means something in a foreign language. Just like it's not against policy to have a single word be your name in English.

As long as it doesn't mean a phrase (like Skoal.. that's a huge violation but he got grandfathered in) it's okay by them.

Besides, sometimes, when you're having name block, the foreign language route could be the way to go. Although I tend to choose more obscure languages than Spanish.

May we suggest one of these? Keep in mind, these names are
computer generated. Some may be unpronounceable or contain
a modern reference by mistake and therefore be unacceptable.
Please use your best judgement when selecting one:

GemStone III is a Role-playing Game. This means that players interact in the world playing the part of their characters in a medieval fantasy environment. This is known as "in character" (IC) and means that the player is acting out the part believably. The term "out of character" (OOC) means that the player is behaving inconsistently with their character's situation in the game (such as discussing the latest sports event, singing the latest music release, playing the part of a starship captain, or communicating in French, Swahili or any earthly language other than English (Elanthia's Common tongue).

I would assume that included names. I mean, I don't have a problem with it, but if you're going to do it, make it clever and obscure.

Another little bit of GM inconsistancy with their policy, I guess. When I first came back to GS three years ago, I rolled up a character whose name was basically, "Hi/Bye!" in Russian. She got LCI'd. But I also had a character named "girl" in Russian.

I talked to a GM about it while I was in the LCI and he said (Carraig or something like that, I think) that as long as it wasn't a phrase, it was okay.

I guess they just need to get it straight.

I named my character Michiko because I liked how it sounded, but apparently it's also the name of the Empress (?) of Japan, as well as the name of a famous female martial artist, and some Japanese poet.
Someone also asked me if I had taken it from an anime series, but I've never heard of whatever series it was.
The best is when people try to speak Japanese to me (IG). I have no idea what they're saying. :lol:

They should it clearly violates policy that says names with titles in them aren't allowed. Go ahead and give it a shot. Make sure you point out that his name has Sir Rogue (sorta)

When I started playing GS my English was very limited. My grammar was alright thanks to school but my vocabulary was very small. Anyway, I was creating locker characters as I picked up more and more stuff and to make it easier for me to know who had what, I named them by what they were holding, in French.

When I came to the one holding all my skirts and bodices, I wanted to name her "linge," which is french for the subgroup of fabrics including bed sheets and table cloths. We also use that word in slang to mean "clothes" even though it is incorrect. So, unfortunately for me, "linge" is already taken (?!) so my next choice was "lingerie" which is the shop where all above mentioned fabrics are sold. Well, in my limited knowledge of the English language, I had no idea that lingerie was used to mean frilly feminine underwear. We also use it for that meaning in french but I was referring to the historically original meaning. *Sigh* Needless to say I was quickly dragged to the LCI.

Thought you guys would enjoy this little story. Now I know better and most of my locker characters have suitable names. Two of the original set still remain, Lingerie now renamed Ropa (clothes in spanish) and Joya (jewel in spanish).

I couldn't find the meaning on the site, not immediately anyway and didn't feel like digging. This is what I found on a different site:

"All your base are belong to us" is what the evil space leader known as "CATS" says in an introduction that sets up an old video game called Zero Wing, warning the good guy captain of an Earthly spaceship that a great intergalactic war has begun in the year 2101.

Heh! She doesn't. In fact, she doesn't speak at all. In the purge a couple of months ago, I snagged the name Love and threatened to make her into a cutesy-poo empath. But everyone barfed at the idea and I really didn't have the heart to go through with it, being unable to really play that type.

So now she's a locker character. And will remain that way. But at least I stopped it from going into the hands of someone who'd abuse it.

One of my chars had (still has, in a locker) a "Ragged tiger-skin cloak" Or close. I got SO much flack in whispers about that cloak it was hilarious. So she got a cloak "trimmed in soft tiger's hair" or something, and didnt seem to have any more problem.

Not one imaginary tiger was harmed getting that hair, we waited for em to shed or to cough up hairballs.

Well damn, I'm gonna go to Mythic and complain about all those NPC's that have some of the same names as the ones I've seen in Gemstone.

Names aren't copyrighted and I really have never seen what the big deal is in using a name that's not VERY well known. I can understand feeling that way about all the variations of Legolas (however still acceptable for the game) but over one name used by a literary anything? It's just nitpicky. Some will be familiar to some and it won't to others. Many names will remind someone of a name they saw in some book somewhere, you can't take them all away. Names get used over and over.

I have no problem coming here and seeing people comment on names. Reporting them just bothers me, I don't know why if they're not terribly OOC like Kangaroo Jack or BigMac Surprise.

Michiko is actually a fairly common Japanese girl's name. Princess Michiko was hardly the first to have it, nor will she be the last. It's like the name John. There was a very famous English King John. But do you immediately think of him when you hear the name John? No. It's a common name.

Gasp, I just saw someone at McDonald's whose name was William (saw it on the name tag!) He OBVIOUSLY copied it from Prince William of England! Or William Wallace! Or any of the other thousands of Williams.

I thought names that formed phrases were still not acceptable, even after they loosened up (lost their minds) on so-called "silly" names. This one definitely is a phrase, and I would want clarification on why that is acceptable.
