I'm working on a ranger for fun.
I know it won't happen anytime soon, but once I CAN start training in lores, I'm guessing Blessings lore is my best bet? It seems to effect like, everything a ranger casts.
But should I aim for 95 ranks total? Whats the "normal" cut off?
edit to add another quick question :
I'm having problems figuring out which skill(s) I should drop from my training plan to make up for points when I'm low.
Currently I do the following :
1x armor
2x ranged
1x ambush
1x PT
1x Dodge
1x CMs
1x Harness Power
1x Spell
2x survival
2x Stalk and hide
1x perception
1x first aid
.5x climb
.5x swim
Following that training plan, I'm currently ready to train for level 2, and I don't have enough TP's to get it all :(

Many archers forsake CM, of the skills you have listed.
Lores are neat, but most builds have trouble affording them before the higher levels.
Most rangers prefer summoning lore (usually 36 ranks for cross realm whispering) unless you are planning on adding resistance to armour.

2x perception is a must.

40 summoning is good for using 125 indoors, too.

Drop the stalk/hide. Use 608.
I find survival and first aid useless, too. I don't train in either of them. You don't NEED lores to be a successful hunter. Get all the other stuff you need first.

I disagree with this. Survival and, to a lesser extent, first aid are great skills to have through most of the game. They're just useless at cap.

I don't recall ever using survival on any of my characters. First Aid is useless if you want to make money since that change they rolled in a few years ago. Can only sell so many skins before they're devalued.
Anyway, its a personal choice not to train in these so - best of luck with your new ranger! :)

It seems like a lot of new and casual rangers place more importance on skinning skills than some of the day-to-day "career" rangers. My everyday character is a ranger, and is nowhere near maxed out in skinning skills.
There's a lot to be said for skinning. It can fetch great silvers and bounty points, maybe as well as any other endeavor in the game.
But I think it's also important to be able to hunt effectively. At some point, even if your pelts are worth uber-mega-silvers, it won't make a bit of difference to your bottom line if you are having difficulty killing critters in the first place.
I'd take more kills and decent pelts over fewer kills and great pelts.
But I can certainly see why some people commit the training points to specialize in it. Like Odysia said, it's a personal choice.
