View Full Version : Where are the trick or treaters?!?

It's Halloween. It's dusky/dark. I have 8 freaking bags of candy.

And I've had 3.

Next kid who shows up gets 10 candy bars!

Side note: I feel like kind of a stalker. I checked about 3 times that my light was on, and keep looking out the window to see if any kids are coming. But it's the first time in my life I have EVER had trick or treaters. I want lots!

Ok, so I just had like 10 at once. There was a boy about 3 years old dressed as a pig - it's the cutest thing I've ever seen.

My kid and his wife came over with our grandson. Made our night. He was a giraffe for his first halloween.

9 weeks old, so cute.

Ok, then hold on to the idea, and use it as punishment at about age 13.

This town has a stupidly early curfew for trick or treating & no one seems to really have more than 3 houses per block passing out anything which sucks considering the kids only get about 2 hours total to run around & they spend most of it busting ass just to get 20 pieces of candy.

Did I mention I can't wait to gtfo of this shithole asap?

We had lots of kids at the shop tonight. Almost ran out of candy! Lots of costumes, we were all in costume, it was a fun evening.

I had the cutest little kid stop. I've been sitting in my family room, which is down like 5 steps from the front door. I can hear the kids coming, but waited for them to hit the doorbell as I could also hear some groups when they were just walking by - plus I'm lazy.

So I hear a voice say "trick or treat". Figure it's at the neighbors. It gets a little louder, quickly progressing to yelling "TRICK OR TREAT", so I figure he really is at the door. I go answer, there he stands - probably 3 years old, and the spitting image of my nephew. I bend down and tell him to take a couple pieces, and he gets all exasperated and sighs "I can't!"

He has his bag on his arm, chocolate all over his mouth, and an open candy bar in each hand. I wanted to empty the entire bowl of candy into his bag it was so freaking cute.

I got to take my son out tonight for his first time. He was a pirate.

I was surprised at how many houses didn't give candy out. I don't know if it was a Saturday night thing, or if there's just a ton of stingy bastards in my neighborhood. I live in a nice neighborhood so WTF?

I let him pick his costume out this year. It also came with a train conductors hat but he didn't want to wear that.

Going trick or treating at a mall is pretty big these days. At least for the little ones.

I had zero trick-or-treaters - I just moved to the state, and figured being somewhere cold and me being in an apartment that is laid out like a hotel, we'd get loads... Guess I was wrong. Good think I love Mike&Ikes and Hot Tamales.

Last year, in my last apartment, we got zero - but it wasn't a great neighborhood...

Year before last in a fairly nice area house I think we got 3-4.

I don't think I've got a good number of trick-or-treaters for 4-5 years now.

I had my little ones out early. My 5 year old was Darth Vader and my 6 mos old was Yoda. I have to say, it was pretty freaking adorable. My other favorite of the night was a kid with a tall alien type costume where his head stuck out the middle and a dummy in jammies dangled in front. He didn't say trick or treat, he yelled "I'm being abducted, help!". Cute.

Damn.. I thought it was only me.

Last year, we had no less than 300 people at our door. This year, we had a grand total of 11.

Last year, the streets were filled with double parked cars where people were being bussed in from surrounding neighborhoods.. this year, our neighbor was mowing his law and our street was pretty much dark.

Last year, we had to turn off all of our lights and sit in almost complete darkness so people stopped knocking on our door (we ran out of candy).. this year I have a giant bucket of candy left over.

Last year, I ended up giving one piece of candy to kids, fearing that I didn't have anywhere near the candy needed.. this year, I was literally giving away handfuls at the end. One little 5 year old "Spiderman" exclaimed "Wow".

I stopped giving out candy about four years ago.

Too many bratty kids without costumes, too many who refused to say "trick or treat" too many unsupervised five year olds, too many who didn't bother to say thank you.

Parents suck these days.

 That's hilarious, I love it.

I think I'm one of the few parents around here who doesn't think that going trick or treating at the mall or 'trunk or treating' is fun.

We've always gone all out on Halloween though, the girls would run trick or treating until their legs were too tired to go anymore, I would bring hot cocoa in a thermos for them & we just had a lot of fun seeing all the decorations & houses that had people hiding to scare the trick or treaters.

Fuck mall trick or treating, just one more wimp out for parents who don't want to actually do something with their kids.

The hospital here was offering to x-ray the kids candy for free too. Jesus people are crazy paranoid anymore. Just check the shit for rips & tears & let it go, most of the bite sized stuff people hand out anymore isn't going to conceal a fucking razor blade.

My daughter falls every year trick or treating but we got through it incident free.

We came home and handed out our candy until everything was gone. We got up to go inside (we sit on the porch and hand it) and she gets her foot caught under the porch and sprains her ankle and finger.

I hate Halloween.

I saw a kid with that costume while we were out this year; it's really cute.

My neighborhood itself is ok, but borders on a not-so-great area, so I really don't feel comfortable walking around with my daughter and going up to people's houses that we don't know (which is almost everyone off our street and the street leading to it, so that gives us only a few houses).

We end up at one of the area malls 'cause my brother-in-law works security there and we can show off his niece to his coworkers and store employees he's gotten to know...and we turned it into a huge event this year by taking some time to grab dinner while we were out and spending lots of time in the play area, letting our girl run around with the other kids hyped up on sugar, while us adults got to talk a bit with other parents and ooh and aah over costumes (something that wouldn't happen in our neighborhood). Everyone had safe fun, the toddler got to practice running around without fear of a car coming to run her over, and now I have free candy to mooch (for some reason, suckers and lollipops were big this year, and I'm not giving one of those to a 13-month-old).

Now I have only 364 days to plot out next year's costume for her. Hmmm...

Hilariously my roommate and her heart had a huge bowl of candy and her light on and not one person came. It was also the only light on our street. (accept the police cars)

In before clove. I know... I'm lying.

(I also have a shit ton of smarties/skittles/starbursts we sort of expected it so bought the skittles and starbursts because we like them anyways)

The past few years were a handful.

5-7 years ago, would be 20-25.

10 years or so ago, you'd expect 50-100.

I think Halloween, as we've experienced it as kids, is long-gone. It's a sad development for the holiday ... but I think it is a generational change in a sense.

Yeah I think it's turned into a party holiday for adults now, which is fine by me. I loved seeing all the ladies dressed-up this weekend.

We normally buy 6-7 bags of candy to distribute. They left us dry! At one point they came in herds and cleaned us out. We ended up turning off the porchlight so that they'd stop coming... but they rang the bell anyway.

I don't know, but when I went trick or treating back in my day, you didn't approach a house that didn't have their lights on. These days they don't care.

And what is up with these kids that show up without costumes?! No candy for you!

I remember going T or Ting as a kid in a area near Yale. A lot of houses gave out Cash Money. Being as smart as I am (was), I used to just change costumes and go in a circle, over and over. One old women gave out $5 bills.

Took my brothers the other day and all they got was a pillowcase full of crap.
Damn recession.
