Anyone else heard of this new film Avatar? (And no, not the anime one)

Just ran across it today and I am really impressed with the whole thing. James Cameron is a great director, and he appears to have done it again. This looks like a seriously kick ass movie.

Yeah I saw the preview when I went to see the shit-tastic movie that is Paranormal Activity.

It looks awesome.

This preview looks significantly better than the previous ones, which largely made it out to be yet another "noble savages overcome the evil, technologically superior foe, despite 500 years of difference in weaponry" nonsense conflict like the Ewoks/etc. I'll probably see it.

I think the cinematography looks amazing but the plot is a complete turnoff.

Cameron is a lot like Kubrick, other than Titanic, a lot of his movies aren't appreciated immediatly and usually aren't huge blockbusters, but over time the audience and their critical appeal seems to grow similar to how a lot of Kubrick movies were initially recieved.

Reviews on this remain skeptical it seems, but I'm sure from a cinematography viewpoint as a director it'll probably be among some of the best work. He built his own state of the art cameras for this film so he's really just pushing the medium of capturing film perhaps more than telling a story. The technology and art of it seems to be the priority with it resulting in a film.

The premise for this movie remind me of another 3D Scifi movie that wasn't released too long ago.

Maybe Jimmy is borrowing ideas?

Oh, and in these recent movies, Battle for Terra, District 9, and now Avatar, I love how film makers are making the ETs the good guys, while us Humans are nothing more than oppressive, greedy, tech, mineral, and land hungry assholes.

I probably would have wanted to see it if it hadn't been hyped as "THE BEST CGI EVER" and when I look at it...it pretty much looks like every other instance of live actors with a blue screen and CGI. If they had made it all CGI, but been so good that we would have been fooled into thinking it was real, then I'd pony up the money.

Otherwise, meh plot, meh CGI, meh actors.

Am I the only one that thinks this movie looks like a cliched contrived piece of shit? I mean, hell, here's the whole movie in one paragraph:

"Humans find planet, want resources on the planet, planet has sentient lifeforms that fight with staffs and bows and arrows and ride giant creatures, and they live on top of the resources. Instead of all-out war, they clone an alien-human hybrid, get a cripple to control it, and send it to the natives as a trojan horse to convince them to leave their home. But he falls in love with a blue chick, and ends up being the leader of the native resistance."

There, I just saved you three hours.

The CGI is good, sure, but when it's mixed so closely with human actors as in this movie, it becomes pretty apparent that it's CGI, and that only serves to distract you. The only movies that have heavily combined CGI with real actors without being distracting were the Lord of the Rings movie, and the Star Wars movies to a lesser extent.

Considering how much money was spent on this movie, you'd think they would be able to come up with something better then that.

This movie looks terrible. The CGI looks lousy and the plot is way too cliche.

Ahh yes. I remember this movie from when I was in elementary school.
