It's Diablo 2.5, made by the dudes who were responsible for D1 and D2 but left Blizzard.
And it's fucking awesome.

Looks like they just ripped off D3.

It was posted in another thread but... have you tried demon's souls? It's slit wrists hard.
My roommate was playing it this afternoon as I was doing laundry/finishing with work, and every time I went by the living room he would say "I just want to quit playing... why oh god won't it let me get my corpse so I can quit playing.

Downloading.
I'd love to try demon's souls, but alas- no PS3.
Homebrew hack'n'slash are my favorites. Like Kult and Dink Smallwood.

I wonder how much more traffic Torchlight got today because Penny-Arcade linked to it. They're becoming the "Oprah" of the video game world.

wow, looks like a replica of D3
I hate you, Rimalon. I was feeling all grown-up having a video-game-free Birthday for once. You just ruined that.

Only 3 professions? Yikes.
Only 20 bucks. Yay.
The system requirements are really low. Said somewhere on the site they were even playing on some netbooks. Anyone playing that can share the specs of their computers and what kind of performance they're getting?

they had to release it before D3 or they'd get 0 business

I'm running a dual core @ 3 ghz, 4 gig RAM, graphic card's a nvidia 8800 GT...
Game runs smooth on max settings, of course!
Farn (or anyone who's playing?)... what class did you pick?!

I'm downloading now.
I'm planning on Alchemist, once it's all downloaded and installed. I usually don't go for the spellcaster types, but he seems not as stereotypically magey, and I don't want to play the brute or as a woman.

Anyone playing this on Windows 7?
I can't get it to run....

just played the demo until I got to level 4, it was meh
I've had great fun with it so far. Alchemist with a dog, 3 imps, pistol in one hand and sword in the other. Tossing a few ice bombs when there are clustered swarms. I love that it automatically uses the sword in melee range and the pistol otherwise.
The game isn't ground-breaking, but it's a whole lot of fun. I'd say it's well worth twenty dollars. I love the art style. Like World of Warcraft, it's nice to have a world that goes for a more unique, colorful fantasy look and feel rather than trying to look too realistic.

In the demo version you can only get to level 8 :(
Sad.

By corpse do you mean recover souls, or recover body? I just play in soul mode with Cling Ring to make the health hit less absurd.
I'm about ten hours into it, and I think I am going to take a long sabbatical from it to read Gathering Storm, before I chuck my PS3 out the window.

He meant recover the souls on his body... he kept getting to it, and then thinking he was close to a boss or a semi-checkpoint (like the 1st level where you pull a lever that unlocks a shortcut), and then he'd die again.
I was very "throw the game out the window" until I finally established myself, got some solid gear and have a pretty good soul farming method (there is this awesome section where you can wrack up about 7000 souls right at a nexus thingie ... so you can easily farm it, it's this guy that looks like death with a scythe you can kill from far away with a bow). That and I farmed a shitton of shards, have a sick kilij w/ mana regen.
Some parts are very frustrating, mostly guys that kill you in one hit. The cthulhu looking guys in the prison SUCK if they catch you off guard. I lost a 50,000 soul corpse today... that kinda sucked.

20 bucks gets you the full game of Torchlight yo. 30-ish levels of the main dungeon, plus an "unlimited dungeon"...
etc etc.

I want a version that doesn't look like Dungeon Runners ate it, then vomited it back out.

I'm really enjoying this little game.
Made it up to level 13 tonight, and about to go to the 6th level of the mines.
Anyone find any interesting items yet? I found a unique hat and belt.
My alchemist is level 17 now. I've found a few uniques, and one set item. My favorite unique so far is the Revolving Geargun - a max speed pistol with some general resists and such. Unfortunately I'm getting to the point where it's not really strong enough to use anymore, but it's still fun.
I also found a unique rifle called "Ice Dragonne" which is extremely powerful (unless the target resists ice damage), but slow. I can one-shot most anything but bosses with it. It looks kind of goofy, though. There's an open-mouthed skull at the end of the barrel, and I've always thought skulls looked silly on items.
Of course, now that I just learned the Ember Blaze ability or whatever it's called, weapons are pretty obsolete. I just hold down the button and wave the beam around like a madman and watch everything in the room get mowed down, and this is with only one point in it. My minions pick off any survivors.
While it's fun to see my foes fall in droves, it is pretty easy, so I'm going to definitely switch to a harder difficulty for my next character. I'm currently playing on Normal. Maybe they adjusted it for people who haven't played a game like this before. I'm not too far down in the dungeon though, I don't think (floor 15ish or so) , so maybe the difficulty begins to scale up quicker at some point.
I love my full pet mastery skill, which not only makes my minions more powerful, but also makes my dog return really quickly after sending her to sell items in town. Very handy.

Where is this demo? I go to the site in the OP, and it's a link to buy the whole game. Is the demo not free?

Sounds like you downloaded FATE by accident.
If this game is just a blatant ripoff of every other game in the genre, which was designed to milk the diablo III hype, then kudos to Torchlight!

rofl, so THAT'S where you were?
Normal difficulty is REALLY easy. I started there, but quickly switched; the devs said Very Hard is what a seasoned D2 player should be playing.
I've found a couple unique guns, as well... I've got a Vanquisher dual-wielding pistols with a slew of +faster attack shit... SHE IS SO FUN TO PLAY!

ALSO! Magic find equipment REALLY works, and has a big effect even though you don't see some of the insane percentages like D2. I think I have about 15% on my Vanquisher, with 5% more on my pet (if that helps?) and I usually find 2 uniques/set items per floor.
Huh. I'll have to start hanging onto those, then.
I just got rid of my first character and restarted on Hard difficulty (after putting my set and unique items into the Shared Stash - awesome feature). Battles are a bit more satisfying now, instead of just, "Hey look, some monst- ... corpses."
Anyone else notice the 28 days later music? :P

I've got max treasure find for my bowzon with 17% in gear. I get all kinds of awesome shit.
What I have noticed though is when my pet kills someone, like the end boss for the game, it doesn't generate loot.
I wasn't pleased with that.

That's a known bug, and it's like that for all minions, I believe?
They're fixing it in the patch... which should be out in a couple days.
HEY DAN! YOU SHOULD READ THEIR FORUMZ, BRO!

Also true if you manage to charm a boss and he fights another boss. But at least the fight is cool.
