I expected this game to be really terrible, but the demo was pretty solid. Rented it last night and it's pretty cool so far.
Unless the online multiplayer is mindblowing, it's good for a rental but I doubt I'd buy it.
Worth checking out.

I'll check out the demo. Honestly, Jack Black is incredibly fucking annoying as an actor, but is a passable voice actor. Genre-blending is always risky.. sometimes it pays off spectacularly like in Deus Ex, other times.. like Spore.. not so much. Did you play it on the 360 or PS3?

I saw an episode of attack of the show dedicated to it, and it looked awful (and of course AotS praised it over and over). it looked truely terrible... doesn't look like there is a lot of depth to it, as in the mechanics seem simple (which can be good but not full priced game good).

I'm not really a Jack Black fan either, but he wasn't bad at all just doing voice. Played it on PS3.

So far the combat is pretty straightforward and simple. You have a battle axe and a guitar as your weapons, and a car you can summon with a guitar solo. Not sure what else you get later, if anything.
Basically as long as you don't take the game very seriously, you'll have fun playing with it. That's what I got out of it so far anyway.

Basically, it all boils down to whether or not it is funny. You guys think it is?

the demo seems funny. I liked it based on that, but not spend 70 bucks liked it.
batman on the other hand I went and bought immediately after playing the demo.

I spent three seconds looking at Brutal Legend on Wednesday, laughed, and bought Demon's Souls instead after deciding the cover looked somewhat like a cross between Oblivion and Diablo.
One hour in and a bunch of WTF later, I am glad I passed everything else over. Game is aesthetically awesome and everything, but it's actually difficult. Like, 1990s difficult.

<steers thread completely off its tracks>
I've been playing it, too. You can enlist the help of other souls if you're not in soul-form yourself. That's how I beat the second boss. =X
I'm a melee character--some enemies very much require "stay the fuck away from it" tactics, which is fun to try and work around. Have to sneak, backstab (Latria) and get your riposte timing down (Storms place) to succeed. It was also really hard making a non-hideous character.. I'm happy with my end result, but he's covered in armor anyway. </trainwreck>
