Is there a level cap in Gemstone? It's been so many years I can hardly remember. Thanks.

100, but you can get EXP and training points forever. So there are different EXP levels of capped characters.

What do you mean exactly? So you can still become better at skills past the level 100 cap? What are some examples of different EXP levels of capped characters please? Thanks.

Once you hit cap, you gain 1 MTP/PTP per 2500 experience.

Skills are still capped though.
i.e. If you're a wizard, once you reach 202 spell aiming ranks, you can't train in the skill anymore no matter how many TPs you have.
Basically, skills have a hard cap too.

So basically, if you are a square, you are teh suck post cap. Semis and pures are the way to go.

If you're not interested in learning spells or obtaining lores, warriors especially start to max out relatively quickly. Short of learning every weapon type just to learn it, or starting to hunt like a rogue (Stalking/Hiding), you do start to max out skills around 15-16 million experience. So many magical skills are just absolutely useless for a warrior, like Spell Aiming, or only useful up to a small point, like mana control.
Basically, the last BIG tp sink for warriors is 3x dodge. Going from 2x to 3x is a crapton of TPs for relatively little gain, unless you're using a 2 handed weapon, which would proclude bothering to train in shields. At that point, warriors begin to train SIDEWAYS, gaining more ways of killing somehing with exactly the same tactics (Using a 1 handed blunt instead of a 1 handed edged weapon).
Rogues are better, as they can go nuts and train in spells, which soaks up millions of exp. Warriors could as well, but at double the cost, even Tsin couldn't have gotten his spells without gutting his other skills.

I totally agree with that too. Only 12 more levels to go, for me!
droit

Basically, semis can do it all. They can 2x weapon styles/CM/ambush/dodge just like squares (okay, rogues can 3x dodge, but a ranger fully trained for 618 is effectively 3x too), plus they can 2x spells with reasonable TP costs and take advantage of lores almost as well as pures (the diminishing returns of 3x spells level things out a bit). Far enough post-cap, semis can even start to eclipse pures and squares in their own specialties thanks to an array of spells that seek to compensate for our "jack of all trades" status.

Post-cap semis might be the best right now, but who knows what changes the GM's might make down the road to balance the playing field. Of course that is true with every single statement you could possibly make in Gemstone, but still.

Long term goals for Dufin: self-cast 120, 425 and 430 - Redux be damned.

Take the easy way out: just buy self-chargers instead. Or maybe that's just a leg up and then just sell them when you can cast them yourself. I dunno. At some point none of it really matters that much. Just have fun playing the game.

I would be decimated via spell burst if they are not self-cast.

Nah. The thing is, when you have nice toys like that, you want a ton of ranks of AS or MIU just for the added duration and ease of invocation. So that cures your spell burst problem right there, and costs a lot less in terms of TPs. 100 ranks each in AS and MIU and problem solved?

You obviously have no real experience with spell burst as a square.

Archigeek - 100 ranks each in AS and MIU and problem solved?
120, 425 and 430 costs 75 mana requires at least 225 AS & MIU to avoid spellburst. So no, 100 ranks each in AS and MIU will not solve the problem.
This would also remove the ability to wear any other spells in the spellburst area while hunting. Not very wise for the cost/benifit analysis.

No he's absolutely right, I have very little experience with spell burst, hence the question mark after my "statement" nor do I care to have any, I hate going places where I have to spend an hour sorting my crap just to go hunt there, so I stay away. I stand corrected, it just wouldn't do. 430 though? What's the point? If you have that many TP's as a square, DS is not much of a worry. You're better off stopping at 425 I would say, and keeping some more redux.
And yeah, I have some nice TD stuff. That solves a heck of a lot of a warrior's biggest problem right there. With your basic blues and guards and a little bit of lesser shroud I end up with a TD of about 420. Add in the natural CvA of full plate and you end up not getting warded in the scatter when your wizard friend is. It doesn't help when he immolates you under the influence of sympathy however. Heh.
Back to the heart of the matter though, warrior's run out of things we can do that make us better, and that's been described here pretty well. Semis rock post cap. Squares don't. Pures do, but less than semis. For most of the pures I know it's probably more a matter of skill and tactics and the toys that come from longevity that combined make them damn fine in battle. Personally I think everyone should have strengths and weaknesses. But as has been stated, as semis get past cap, they can fill in their weaknesses and instead of being "jack of all trades, master of none" or master of one and sucky elsewhere, they become master of both physical and magical.
Bottom line though is that it's a game! I'm having a blast hunting the scatter with friends I haven't had much chance to hunt with in years. I don't really much care if they're better at killing than I am. I mean, we do all want to be successful, but we just have fun, and I'm still generally the most survivable character amongst us when the shit hits the fan, so that is enough ego stoking for me.

Except for burrows! I still have no idea why squares like you and Grendeg are getting the shaft from that maneuver.
Archigeek

Too true on the burrows, but you may have noticed that they cranked those way way down. Almost no one dies from burrows anymore. Personally I think the rift crawlers should be a lot tougher to kill; less crit-able. They're supposed to be freakin' huge afterall. It was said that stance had a lot to do with the burrows, with defensive being the best. That would explain why the classes that have to fight in an offensive stance would be worse off... and also be rediculously unfair. We are after all the ones who have physical prowess instead of bookish knowledge of spells and what not.
As it turns out, the hardest thing for a square anyway on plane four is the crusaders. They're little hasting trick is nasty, and they heal up so frickin' fast, you can hardly keep up when you're dealing your damage 5 seconds at a time.

I always that that was crap. 5s vs 3s. I would think you'd atleast get a second of your swing the more skilled you were. You can tell me all incantaioms would realistically be said in less time than it takes to swing your sword.

The defense has been that swinging your sword involves various feints and parries, approaching cautiously, circling and striking at the right moment.
... like that'll make you feel any better.
