Gemstone IV on Linux

Alright I have Ubuntu now. After getting Gemstone back, not even a day after, my computer desides to go on a blue screen meltdown and wouldnt boot into safe mode either. Soo I had to install another os, this was the only os I had. Is there any way to get on Gemstone With it?

I found Lich. But I cant get Ubuntu to run the install. I double click install and it disappears and nothing happens. Help if you can please. I suck at linux!

you need to install ruby and run lich.rb --install

i guess ubuntu probably already has ruby though.

you still won't have a front end. the only one i know of that runs in linux without virtualization is muby, which is written in ruby and really sucks.
it's curses based so it runs in the terminal.

you'll have to write your own code to handle the SGE part to login and get
your game key.. or just do it through the website and parse the file that is normally sent to the launcher.

it's all kind of a pain in the ass, but Tillmen was working on a ruby SGE. maybe his is done. I can send you some ruby code that will negotiate your login, but i won't be home for 2 weeks.

I think I just saw you ingame if you have the same ign game as you do here.

But It took a bit but I got it. Lots of searching. Used Wine to install SGE, and then to install some Wizard from another site that hooked to gem. No idea on psinet however though.

I dont know to many people in the game now. Mainly used to go around with Herel, Haalen, Demietria, Maleek, Maginthree, and those people! I kinda feel lost with all these people. So I tend to move quick to hunt, since there's really no one thats around I know. Now after I'm done playing tonight. I'll look for information on psinet and maybe be able to get it going hopefully.

You can run the wizard (but not stormfront) in Wine. apt-get install wine. Download sg32inst.exe and run wine sg32inst.exe in a command line. Ubuntu should automatically add an SGE icon to the program menu. (Under Wine->Program-files->Simultronics iirc)

lich can run in linux and then the wizard can interface with it (Although it's been years since I've done this so I don't remember how). Psinet doesn't work correctly in wine. (At least I could never get it working)

If you have a windows license you can install virtualbox and run windows inside that, just using it for gemstone. This is what I ended up doing to use Stormfront + Psinet. VirtualBox is like VMWare, so you'll be running a full windows install on top of Linux..which works pretty well. You can also use VMPlayer to do the same thing.

I'm using the wizard wine thing, Its a little slow. But I can Deal. I personally cannot stand stormfront and prefer to use Wizard. XD

I know. Just soo very boring doing it that way. I sometimes get slightly confused.
