The usual festival/auction advice applies...
Gather up all the items you want altererd/lightened/deepened. Start working on ideas or full fledged alters and save it into a notebook/word file so you can copy/paste it to the merchant. Time saved = more work done for others.
Centralize all your coins, fwi or your normal town. Do it now! The auctioneers aren't gonna hit 4-5 different banks. Running an auction is a LOT of work honestly since I've run several as staff and a player, you don't want to be playing 'find the coins!'
If you got the coins, pay for the room at least once during the weekend. More time a GM doesn't have to spend collecting fees, more time they can work.
We'll have a Mibbit chatroom again. Work well with others. Share info, buy/sell/trade services you can't use. Everyone who did this @ CCF really made out in coins and services.
Food/Drink - Delivery ftw, foods you can nuke quickly. Coffee/tea (Keurig ftw), alcohol of your choice, snacks. Gonna need it. Stand up and stretch and work out in down times (early sat/sunday AMs)
Listen to everything the auctioneers say, or don't say about an item. Don't bid on something just to get something/anything. You're gonna get one item just winning a ticket. Try to get something you'll use or you want. Not all items are created equally really. Again, watch the chat room, the usual crowd, me , Belnia, Kizun, Lucos, Durfin, etc. be sharing as much info as we can when we see items.
Item information
-------------------
Spikes are pretty open ended to what they can go, but fairly useless to many as they are offensive only. If you don't tackle, sweep, bearhug, etc, leave a spot for people who do.
Armor Flares - always good on greaves, spiked/flaring greaves rule, double flares, those Sunfist enhancive leg greaves be nice to work on and/or resale
Weapon flares - which ever works...best enchant/perfect weapons too
Flare notes....
Ok, I rank flares by 3 things, damage, creature resistances, and enviromental effects. Examples: lightning is the most damaging but useless in water areas, fire is good damage but can't use it in the bowels (enviromental) and Teras fire critters (creature resistance) so...
In my opinion of the common flares , impact and acid are the best.
Uncommon - vaccum, disruption, disintergration
Obviously, since a list of service or raffles or anything hasn't come out, the following is just general advice if such a service is made available.
Recharging - do the hardest out of circle / enhansives first!
TD booster - shields only generally (just my opinion), if you do armor, it cannot have padding/flares.
Spell enhancives - for the armor, just use your normal armor, it can't be lost by normal means. For the shield/weapon one, yah, use a dagger or a throwaway cheap imflass shield so you can use and stow it.
Weighting - The best bang for your buck is a perfect weapon. Higher DF + weighting = win. Higher the enchant the better. If not perfect, highest enchant you can lay your hands on on a decent weapon base.
Padding - Again, yah, higher the enchant the better.
Enchanting - well, do your best here, low level limits are pretty restrictive, but 3-5x hcw are good, high enchant perfects,
Sanctification - Claids, or other crit weighted OHEs that a weapon swinging cleric use
Permabless - Hard hitting polearms/twohanders/strong OHEs, as always, higher the enchant the better and/or perfects.
Resistances - if offered, grab slash, puncture, or crush damage over anything. Nature is decent, fire or void (darn imploisions)
General guidelines...an item can have...
Enchanting
Padding/weighting/TD/flares/permabless
ONE script (ezscript/self mana/fluff/combat/etc (many/most combat scripts will negate the ability to have weighting/padding etc on the item)
Resistances (armor)
Spikes (armor/shields/accessories)
Enhansives (unlimited in concept, restricted generally)
Restrictions (like giantman only)
Holiness (sanctify)
Hope that helps in your planning!

I thought vacuum didn't help with the insta-gib anyway? Impact seems to be the awesome. Griffin drops and roa'ter like burrows.

Can't argue too much with impact...its the most common crit flavor.
Crush or slash is the most common attack of critters, with crush doing the most damage of whats available. Would love to have POUND resistances, but not offered.

Thanks for all the tips...do you know if they will come out with a list of items that will be auctioned or raffled?
In 2006 they produced a list, but mostly it was just the description of the item. It didn't give you all, or really any, specifics.
They did say that they were going to put one out this year as well, but when is anyones guess. Hopefully soon.

This is very helpful for those of us who've never been to a paid festival before, and feel like we're headed in blind. Many thanks.
A) Which services are typically raffle only, as opposed to regular merchant appearance?
B) Does adding spikes to armor make it more difficult or impossible to further player enchant?

A - anything which is combat oriented (padding, weighting, flaring, spikes etc), a combat script (black ora flares, knockdown flares) or more than a fluff script (shield harnesses) is generally raffle/list/spinner and limited in how many they can give out.
What can go out in usually unlimited amounts, lightened, deepen, alters, fluff scripts, unlocking fluff scripts, etc.
B - spikes dont add any issues to enchanting.

To help out with this, House Sylvanfair and Elanthian Elegance are teaming up together on 10/15 and 10/22 from 7pm until whenever at the Landing MHO courtyard to help people tweak design ideas or help folks come up with fresh ideas. If you've been to a merchant that designed stuff off of "tell me a little bit about yourself" type information, that's pretty much what we'll be doing with as many folks as we can manage to get to.

Ok thanks a lot. I am one of those who could really really use this help. I need some backups if they reject my ideas. Also, I seem to find myself passing up on merchants who won't do combat stuff simply cause I don't have a design ready for shirts, hats, pants, etc.

Hmm, another question - Will lightening a weapon have any affect on swing RT? Assuming that the difference in weight doesn't change your encumbrance levels, of course.
The consensus seems to be no, but Regyy said 'Yes according to certain weapon weight thresholds.'

Weight has nothing to do with swing time.
It does have to do with stamina costs for certain CM's.

10-11-2009, 06:58 PM
If it's your off-hand TWC weapon, then yes, weight might affect RT. It might also play into mstrike recovery time, but I'm not positive about that.

yep offhand weapon weight matters alot
otherwise not much, unless you're swinging a glaes club
StrayRogue
10-11-2009, 07:06 PM
Beyond TWC, what effects swing-time is encumberance, AGI/DEX, and weapon-base.
For lightening, the most worthwhile thing to get done is your armour until it is max-lightened.

Yes, but lightening your armour actually gains you free encumberance as well as reducing your overall weight.

Actually I just use a couple macros with about four choices (since I have an extra type-ahead line from Premium Points) that I constantly mash over and over.
Just make sure the choices on your macro are NOT what the list currently is and you will get no round-time and in all likelihood get on the list.

The string that turns a weapon into a hurled weapon has brought some strong suggestions against putting it on a handaxe. What would are some ideas of particular weapons to use it on?
That Jay
10-14-2009, 09:18 PM
Unfortunately, it appears that the string can only go on item types of returning hurlers released in the past.
"The weighting, or enchant, does not matter as far as which item you put it on - it will still work and add in the bonuses as indicated. However, it does have to be one of the allowed/approved profiles for a returner weapon, since it converts to that once applied. Handaxe, hammer, discus, quoit, or dagger in other words." - GM Naionna
Out of those choices, a handaxe might actually be the best mechanically.
For sheer giggles though, throwing a returning hammer makes one feel like Thor.

If it would work, I'd purchase Paul's stupidly weighted trident and attach it. Shame it wouldn't fit Stun's RP.

No returning javelin for me :(
Latrinsorm
10-14-2009, 10:05 PM
It's baffling that they would go out of their way to make a (semi-)new thrown gizmo and then not allow it to be put on a legitimate thrown base like the javelin. I could understand if Naionna was just borrowing the code and couldn't alter it, but to disallow? That makes no sense.
Fallen
10-14-2009, 10:11 PM
I imagine it was a limitation of coding. Naionna is good people. She wouldn't limit the item unless she had to.
If you actually read the returning messaging, it makes zero sense for a javelin or a spear to be spinning end over end and return to your hand. Likely she just copied the existing code as opposed to creating new messaging that would make more sense to throw a javelin/spear type thrown weapon.
-Richard.

Still, being able to turn a 10x weapon (really a handaxe or hammer) into a returner is rather nice, especially one with weighting.

Likely she just copied the existing code as opposed to creating new messaging that would make more sense to throw a javelin/spear type thrown weapon.I have read the messaging, and it makes just as little sense for a discus to spin end over end (or any weapon, frankly). She wouldn't even have to create a new message, she could just borrow Weapon Bonding's and get rid of the current (silly) message entirely.
That Jay
10-14-2009, 11:32 PM
Actually I think it is a case of borrowing part of the code. The previous released returners all had their own description when hurled but each is slightly different. The discus does not actually spin end over end. It whirls around like a boomerang but I can't recall what the exact messaging is on the one I used to own. I don't think I have a log of it though, sorry.

"Your vultite chakram spins through the air with an audible swishing noise. It quickly sails through a wide arc, then reverses direction back toward your outstretched right hand. Heedless of any danger, you catch it adroitly, ready to throw again."
When I reactivate my accounts on the 19th, I will post the messaging for daggers, hammers and axes.

Your vultite hammer spins rapidly through the air, the head whooshing audibly with each revolution. As it completes its arc, it reverses direction and lands solidly in your right hand, ready to throw again.

There were also returning nets and bolas released. I'm surprised those aren't allowed!
Personally, I'm inclined to try to get it and go back to two weapon combat hurling, which I was tinkering with for a while. Some nasty business with two returners.
It would really be nice to know what the improvements to thrown are going to be before EG though, as a returner might not be quite the huge advantage it is now.

The returning nets/bolas with knockdown flares were totally seperately coded by someone :)
I'm guessing she just wrote a 'wrapper' script on the string, which then dissipates once you confirm what to attach it too, and then the item ends up with the original returner script by Stealth, which is where the limits on items comes from.
Its still a very cool item, #2 on my list now.

Empaths should be training in manipulation lore, so it'd be decent for them. I can see clerics using it just to test for orb gems for 325 usage. Otherwise, yeah, I'd expect a lot of exploding gems with it.
-Richard.
A capped 1x Manipulation empath is the best non-bard bet for using, but they're still going to be at a marked disadvantage without any 1000s ranks. Without seeing a formula for 1004, though, it's hard to say if it'd be worth it.

I use scrolls to purify gems. As long as you stop at the first sign of danger you can do just fine. I will definitely be tossing my token after this item. Great for sorcerers making good gems for animation.
I think it's an MA game at this point. Although I don't do it at the moment I wouldn't buy an item that a basic account purchase could replicate. Maybe if we had 12k players like we did in the 70's I'd think differently.
I understand the self-sufficiency view though.

Not sure what Fallen thinks, but my little bard stops as soon as she reaches the top tier. Pushing it further just makes it crack or blow up in most cases. She also stops at nine purifications. More than that also seem to make the gem blow up.

You begin your musical chant for Purification Song...
Your spellsong is ready.

You sing a melody, directing the sound of your voice at an uncut ruby.
As you focus your voice on the uncut ruby, the gem hums in response to the resonance of your voice, appearing smoother and more pure in color.
When the song ends, you notice the uncut ruby sparkles a little more and is void of some natural imperfections.
Sing Roundtime 3 Seconds.

Psht. Spoilers.
1) You raise the coraesine falchion, causing the swirling orb-shaped sigil engraved upon its blade to flicker rapidly with blue-white light. The glow spreads forth from the sigil until the entire falchion appears to be made of nothing more than a bright light.
Immediately, the glowing falchion curls inward on itself like a current of wind and coalesces into a small orb of coraesine, its glow giving way to the swirled metal.
2) You raise your glowbark quarterstaff in triumph!
Mystical energies race across the surface of the quarterstaff.
A surge of radiant energy coalesces around you and those nearby.
Your spirit is empowered with an overwhelming sense of determination and resolve.
Distant sounds of fifes and drums resound in the back of your mind, spurring you into a delirium of confidence and resolve -- as if compelled by some irresistable divine exhortation.
You feel a draining sensation from the glowbark quarterstaff.
Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds.
3) As you put the bracers on, a sudden bone-chilling cold creeps across your body until it you feel it settle like an icy grip on your heart! Your vision clouds momentarily, but then returns to normal.
As you settle the black alloy bracers into place, you feel complete once more.
4) You flap your wings mightily, sending strong gusts of wind through the area.
A gust of wind tugs at your sleeves. Suddenly, a fierce wind rips through the area, scattering everything in its path and making it difficult to remain standing.
The wind then subsides.
5) You confer with Carillon for a moment.
Carillon asks where you would like to travel. Choose one of the following destinations:
Wehnimer's Landing
Solhaven
Teras Isle
State your choice out loud within the next 30 seconds.
Aaaaaaand I'm spent.

When dealing with TD, spiritual TD bonuses are halved versus elemental spells, and 3/4 versus sorc spells. Dunno if that's how it'll work with CS or not.

Thin, elegant parchment comprises the certificate, which is edged with intricate platinum filigree in fanciful designs at the corners. The contents of the certificate are etched into the parchment with careful attention to the details of each letter.
There appears to be something written on it.

In the Common language, it reads:
This certificate authorizes the bearer to obtain five custom verbs for items and one custom loresong for an item. The details will be worked out with the merchant, Loehli, who will contact said winner within a reasonable amount of time from the receipt of this certificate.

-----------------------------------
I'd be cool if some burghal gnome inventor took the bubble flare, figured out a way to amp it up to double... no, triple!... nay, more than triple its original power. You'd almost never take damage again. I'd be even better if he tossed a certificate for that in the auction pile. Nay, maybe two... why not three...
Phenomenal!
- Cirath
-----------------------------------
Character 1: "I really like Heroism. Too bad it's almost impossible to get unless you're a cleric or empath."
Character 2. "Ha! Too bad indeed! Good thing I won this handy "thingything" at the Ebon Gate auction. Now I can cast Heroism on myself whenever I want, and I'm a (not empath or cleric, though I guess it'd work but be redundant...) It's a lovely Burghal gnome design."
Character 1: "Curse you and your dumb luck! Curses!"
Character 2: (Casts Heroism a bunch just to rub it in.)
Character 1: (Kills character 2, justice system, Plat justice, etc. etc.)
- Cirath
------------------------------------
Too bad there aren't many gnomes in Plat. A little Burghal gnome told me that there's perhaps the coolest outfit and killer armor set at the auction ever created. Just for the gnomes though... The sacrifices they make. (sigh)

The only problem with all this self-knowledge stuff is that it's nearly crap for us squares. Can't exactly use it in the field. If I coul get it to work consistently yeah, it'd be totally kick ass in the scatter. Trouble is though, that anyone else who can actually get it to work is already sucking air for mana in there, but then I guess losing 15 mana per pulse isn't that bad is it?

At least heroism will last a hunt... cast at a table (or other suitable no-hiderance/remove armor) and you're fine, the advantage being it won't count against your spell burst.
Any other decent duration buff should be fine for a square in the self-knowledge realm.

A few notes.
1) Auction: A mostly complete list of auction items will be posted pretty late this evening (for you guys, that's probably early morning tomorrow, since I'm on PST). There are a few items still being finished up, and I absolutely will not put them on the list until they are thoroughly for sure finished and I know exactly what they look like and how they were built. Someone mentioned that I like perfect lists... I do... I don't like putting the wrong information in them. Also, if you were around for the last auction, the list was not posted more than a few days beforehand -- please bear that in mind when comparing to last time.
Also, some people have noted that there are new items and some that are 'old news' so to speak. This is the norm for auctions, especially with the quantity of items going out for EG. Just like the 2006 auction, there will be new items, and there will also be items that are much-coveted that are re-released for people who have been wanting them for a long time.
2) The FESTIVAL verb very rarely goes up more than a few days before festival opening. It will go up before the festival opens.
3) The Platinum grounds will remain open during Prime's run (and digging and automated games and all that good stuff). Both Prime and Plat's grounds will close on November 6th, very very late at night.

>>Kaikala, will your list also note which room (token or silvers) each item will be found in? And whether or not there are duplicates (i.e. two boats...one can only hope, heh).
It will note Saturday Tokens / Saturday Silvers / Sunday Tokens / Sunday Silvers. They will not be broken down into times within each day since the feeder for our auction items randomizes -- so there's not a way to guess which items will come up first, second, third, etc.
It won't forthright note duplicates, but in some cases, it will be easy to see that that's what they are. It will NOT list all of the properties of items, since, as noted, while I think having some information ahead of time is a good idea, part of the auction is participating and experiencing, so there's a lot of information that should be coming from the auctioneers.

Ebon Gate - Tower Hill Family Auction, 5109
Posted on 10/22/2009 2:43:37 AM by the Webstaff
Tower Hill Family Auction, 5109
Welcome, Guest, to the Tower Hill Family Auction. While you are in attendance, there are several rules that the family has asked you follow while you are on the grounds and within the vicinity of the family's possessions:
Although you are able to freely move between the Azure Chamber and the Jade Chamber, please do not disrupt the proceedings as you make your way into each room.
While you are in each chamber, you may look on the display table to see what item is currently going up for bid. The chest holds items that have not yet been bid on but may very well come up soon.
The auctioneers have been instructed to allow for some "question and answer" time before each item is put up to bid. Once they open the bidding, they will usually call for silence and no more questions will be fielded. They will use the common "Going Once", "Going Twice", "Gone" system of auctioning.
Please be certain to listen closely to what the auctioneer says about each item. Several items have restrictions in who can use them or in how much skill you may need to handle an item. Likewise, certain metals can only be handled by adventurers with enough experience. It is certainly, in the Tower Hill Family's eyes, ultimately the bidder's choice which items he bids on.
If you are bidding in the "Token" room (the Azure Chamber), you should cast your bid by using BID TOKEN. You may withdraw your bid by using WITHDRAW TOKEN.
If you are bidding in the "Silvers" room (the Jade Chamber), you should cast your bid by using BID (AMOUNT). The "AMOUNT" may be shortened to "###k" (for thousands) or "###m" (for millions). Bids will also be recognized if you use a decimal point. (For example: BID 1000 - 1000 silvers; BID 25k - 25000 silvers; BID 1m - 1,000,000 silver; BID 4.5k - 4,500 silver). All bidders in the Jade Chamber will only be able to bid as many silvers as they have on their person between coins and notes. Runners to banks are not provided in the auction chambers.
When the bidding is closed on an item, if you are fortunate enough to be its new owner, you will find that your item has been moved under the display table and that you should be the only one able to retrieve it. If you have won the lot in the Jade Chamber, your silvers will be collected immediately.
Three lots will be offered each day within each of the two auction chambers: There will be lots at Noon, 4:00 pm, and 8:00 pm (all times Eastern) in both the Jade Chamber and the Azure Chamber on Feastday (Saturday) and again on Restday (Sunday). "Alter box"?
Izzea's bedazzler box, put in shoes/cloak etc. along with a gem ...
You put a radiant opalescent thunderstone in your golden box.

You put a pale gold silk capelet in your golden box.

As you close your golden box, you hear a mechanical whirring begin within it. Several measured ticks echo faintly, the unmistakable sound of a ratchet. The device hums along smoothly, giving off an odd assortment of clicks, ticks and clunks until, with one last ratcheting sound, the box falls silent.
Roundtime: 15 sec.

The box opens smoothly but requires a fair bit of force, as though you were pulling against something. Various mechanical whirrings and clicks emanate from the box, finishing with a satisfying CLICK when the box is fully open. Inside the box, you notice two compartments, one of which contains a pale gold silk capelet set with whorls of opalescent thunderstone chips.
Roundtime: 5 sec.

I find it amusing that someone's workplace blocks play.net but not this site. Heh.
Also, I want a boat!
And self-knowledge heroism.
And a piece of string.
That is all.

Play.net is blocked at work. Someone paste the list?
^That. I agree it's stupid that I get the PC but not play.net. Used to be able to read the officials, but in the last six months teh evil IT guys blocked access to it.. bastards.
Thanks for posting the list.

Almost everything is blocked here. Also, I find it stupid that there aren't any Java-supporting browsers for my Java-based BlackBerry. Not that it'd be any fun to play on a tiny screen anyway.

a rainbow quartz runestone, Elemental Barrierr
Anyone catch that? An item that grants E-barrier even once a day is pretty damn nice, ESPECIALLY if it uses MIU. Talk about a Cleric/Empath's item of choice.

Vambraces are up in the silver room. Pity. Anyone gunning for those specifically?

Looks a whole lot better than the 2006 item list. At least so far. Makes me regret not trying to get a ticket.

This just happened, figured it might help some of you who are debating about having flares put on your armor and what kind.
A sharply curved black handaxe flies out of the shadows toward you!
AS: +449 vs DS: +388 with AvD: +23 + d100 roll: +92 = +176
... and hits for 7 points of damage!
Light slash to your abdomen!
Barely nicked.
** Your spiked armor releases a blast of vibrating energy at the triton executioner! **
... 35 points of damage!
Hard blow to the triton executioner's back causes him to cry out in pain!
The triton executioner is stunned!
Momentum carries a sharply curved black handaxe past you to land nearby.

I hate warriors.
I hate warriors.
Heh.
That clip does bring a question to mind, though, Durfin. Are reactive flares supposed to work against ranged/thrown attacks? Seems a bit illogical to me.
I can buy it either way, I'm just curious.

The GMs are aware it does. It was brought up on the officials, as reactive flares are similar to Cloak of Shadows, which does not flare against ranged spells via the PC version of the spell. I believe Khal? said working as intended, but if people bitched, he would nerf it. The matter was dropped.
