Someone called me earlier today and their phone number showed up on my cell phone as 401-7. Any idea what that means?

Could be a government phone. Or the phone company doing a test after a line went down. I've had weird numbers calling for both occasions.

It was clearly a lockpicking rogue capable of popping boxes seeing if you needed any work done.

I'll give you a real answer. It's when a company sets up their large phone system up incorrectly and you only get their extension. So basically, if you know where they called from, you now have their extension. Happens a lot with the digital packages corperations use these days that are hooked up to a central server.

It definitely makes sense, which is a bonus.

Its just a phone number mask more then likely.

I mask my own number from time to time when calling friends from work. I like using the number 555-867-5309. But I can use whatever I want.

I've been building and deploying Cisco VoIP phone systems for years both in the commercial and high level DOD agencies. One of the perks of having the admin rights on the systems you build.

Shoot me a PM with you number and Ill show you...

Ponzzz could be on the money too. But it all boils down to how the outbound dialing mask is configured. But its a very easy change when using a Cisco CallManager or the new CUCM boxes. Or even on the voice gateways where the PRI's are located.

Anyway my nerdy ass is back out!
