I would like to hear from some ranged using rangers. I am about to convert to ranged weapons and would like some input or whatever you might find helpful. I am currently hunting moulis, and the like. Thanks in advance

Everything in Maaghara has very soft heads. It's like kobolds with spells in terms of easiness.

I was looking more in terms of archery advice. I've almost lost my scythe twice and just don't feel like taking the chances any more. A 4x bow is much easier to replace than a 8x hcw unique one hander

I'm in the "anti-ranged" party when it comes to Rangers, so I'm not much help there, sorry.

I guess I could always use throw away weapons..

I'm a ranged ranger. I enjoy it. I also snipe from the shadows when I hunt alone. its enjoyable. don't do fletching unless you're that bored. 5x arrows are nice but getting standard arrows e-bladed is quite easy and cheaper to replace then 5x arrows.

e-blading fletched arrows is not even hard and a good payoff.
Just go ranged, 2x perception and ranged weapons, 1x dodge. You're golden.

Core:
2x Range
2x Perception
1x Dodge
1x Ambush - Some folk say yes some folks say no. Let me say getting my ranger upto 2x is a post cap goal.
Why?
Perception and Ambush training beyond the first 40 ranks. Perception’s benefits, however, max out at 200 ranks. The AS bonus is: +1 AS per 2 ranks each of Perception and Ambush over 40. This means that 2 ranks of perception and 2 ranks of ambush would equal +1 AS

Whatever else you want to train in is up to you. It is really hard to screw up a ranger as you know :)

Suggestions:
Cmans for Range users suck as a Ranger. Sure you can get Disarm but you can carry an arrow around in your right hand in those areas. Those get disarmed first over the bow.

Stalking and Hiding: I rarely if ever snipe from the shadows. It has become almost more of a RP thing for me. Wearing 606 + 509 and using Haste inbeds i waste Warcamps from shooting from the open. 1 second open aim eye shots!
However, I have had success stalking and hiding while soloing Bandits.

Armor: I recommend getting into chain armor. I know you are hunting the tower so I figure you have some decent armor. Many of us range users wear Augmented Chain. I put puncture resistance on my chain when I hunt Warcamps because there are soo many blasted archers in camps.
I also could find a Paladin and have them reduce the spell hinderence for me.

I carry a 6x composit bow and use ebladed arrows. If I want to hunt undead I can fletch some arrows and get them blessed.

On the other hand, I advocate the inverse for rangers. My rogue archer does ambush cause its cheap, but I'd rather like other skills. He's young still, working on GoS, and yes, I favor open archery and haste imbeds as well.

Really is no wrong way to train a ranger, and archers are fairly easy, this is mine...

Working towards brig, as much dodge as I can get, magical skills for magical toys, lore for damage spells.

What you doing with your imba scythe mate? :D

Trouble

My ranger switched over to ranged in the Tower because he lost his 10x shield in there when it got thrown into the next room. I never looked back. Like you say, it's a lot easier to replace a 4x-6x bow than a nice weapon/shield.

I didn't bother with hiding (or ambush) once I got into the mid 80's but it's probably still useful at that age. I essentially went with what Drayal suggested.

I suppose the scythe will go in the locker. The original owner sent me a PM a few years ago asking to be considered first in line should I decide to sell it; however, I haven't seen that person around in years. I don't even have a clue what that thing would bring really. Anyone have an idea what a 8x hcw one handed scythe (handaxe based) would bring? It has a show and all that fancy stuff.

I noticed both zhelas and kookiegod don't show any cman training? How has that effected you? If I were to drop all of my cman training I would have a metric ton of training points.

For an archer you really only need (want) a few ranks in Disarm before you get to OTF, IMO. I was a very heavy magic trained ranger so I didn't do CM until I was in my 90s. I avoided the issue for the most part by wearing my bow while not actively firing (part of my fire macro). I was 1x in brawl and dodge so unless I was on my back in offensive I was still safe in OTF empty-handed.

CMAN training becomes more important in later levels. You'll appreciate the generic and specific defense. Disarm and feint/sweep are the standard defensive maneuvers. Ambush training is really only necessary when you start facing creatures in plate armor.

I'm also in the anti-archery camp despite being an archer myself. It's just so damn TP efficient.

My ranger is also only 60. I was working on CMANs sometime earlier this year before I changed over to GoS. I wanted him to be atleast 1.5x in Physical Fitness.

I do plan on getting CMANs. Since I really don't snipe from the shadows anymore, maybe I will against plate users, I see my Hiding and Stalking as a pool of points to draw on to fix any deficits I may have.

CMANs unfortunately don't help your Ranged AS. Multi Fire is silly. I would rather have a 1 second aimed eye shot in my opinion. As Droit mentioned CMANs really become more defensive.

Peace

Here is the finished product.. I have some 6x augmented chain that I can wear but I have been in FGB up until now. Can I pad 4x armor with 5100 pp? Let me know how it looks.

You can pad that 6x with 5100 points.

But I'd enchant it up to 7x while you wait the four months to get 400 more PPs. 7x HCP aug chain is sweet.

Also, drop the hiding and pick up more ranger spells.

Sharnath

I suppose I can wait four months for 7x hcp augmented chain. Ranger spells will have to wait since I just used my fixskills. Time to get the wizard back to work.

Too bad. Those 150 hiding ranks are worth something like 20 spells for you.

droit
09-24-2009, 08:40 PM
Also, if you want to save TPs, you can stop training CM at 77 ranks. That's enough to get 5 ranks of disarm, 3 ranks of feint and 3 ranks of sweep. Pretty solid, defensively.

Sharnath

Thank you Droit. I suppose I need to check how many bounty points I have or buy a fixskill potion. 20 spells would be sweet.

I just came from a hunt in the tower... Everything in there died from one shot to the eye for 30 minutes straight open aiming and sniping. I suppose my mind is made up now. Thanks to all of you for the help.
