Am I missing the link? When I try to click on the $100,000 challenge pic under the "rescue stories" tab, there's no actual link where you can go vote. It's just a pic. Someone please direct me there so I can vote :D
It took me a minute to find it too. It's one of the purple tabs on the right side.

But what if you have to give those cats to Welfare Queens then?!?!?

Being on welfare does not disqualify a person from adopting at Cat Ladies Society. We ask questions about occupation and income to insure that any potential adopter is able to care for a cat. At the very least, a cat will need a steady supply of food and litter. I'm not nuts on the subject of vaccinations, especially for indoor cats that are not exposed to other animals, but an adopter should be able to spring for veterinary care if the cat gets sick or sustains an injury.

Another reason for the questionnaire is to be certain that a potential adopter is permitted to have a pet in their home. A lot of people in government subsidized housing are not permitted to have a cat. We don't want people adopting our pets and tossing them out into the street when the landlord says "No way".

Voted. My two cats and I approve of your mission.

In addition, I noticed that the #3 ranked shelter in the overall rankings (Operation Scarlet Inc) is in Lancaster, PA. That city is but a short drive for me.

If you would like me to eliminate them for you so you will move at least one additional spot up the rankings, I will do so.

No, if they're a good shelter then they're helping cats and that's what matters. Though I still hope we win!

Please vote every day!

The daily bump! Not to be confused with the daily grind.

Remember to vote!

If we get the money one of the things we're going to do is supplement 200 free spays and neuters for low income cat owners to help reduce the number of unwanted kittens being born. Hopefully we can get that program to snowball and make it a regular thing.

Our blood-sucking lawyer (who is a good guy even if he does look exactly like Ben Affleck) finally filed the papers to make us an official charity. I should get another lawyer, whenever I see the poor dude I think of this silly video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_pFTAY7MF8

As for being an asshole: yes, that is a product of law school. They beat the humility and niceness out of you, and I never had much of the former, and too much of the latter to be a lawyer.

By the way, I don't think I will ever be a lawyer. ;)

Bump!!!
Sorry I haven't been here, we had a HUGE event this weekend (our local Oktoberfest) and we're still putting the place back together.

We had a bunch of little kids wearing Cat Ladies pink and kitty ears. Our kids were a riot, the weather was cold and they'd walk up to people and rattle their donation jars and say "Please donate to Cat Ladies Society mister, I'm SO COLD!"

We're losing ground in the polling, but we will not give up! Please remember to vote and nudge your friends to do the same.

Thanks, you've all been terrific! And as a real thank you, cats and boobs:

Jocelyn is doing fabulously well. I took over as her foster mom when her original foster had to go to San Fran for a month.
Jocelyn had made amazing progress at Edie's house, and after 3 weeks here with 2 other kittens to chase around she is running and playing like a maniac. There is a spot of residual weakness in one back leg, otherwise she is like a normal kitten. Her legs are kinda short and stubby, but that adds to the cuteness factor.
I'm thinking the vet was wrong about her being cerebellar, I think the neuro issue was due to the poisoning. I've never known a cerebellar kitten to regain function, and since Jocelyn has done so her incoordination problems had to come from outside, not inside.
She is the dearest kitten and deserves the best home we can find.
Please keep those votes coming so we can continue with what we're doing!

I thought momma cats killed their kittens if they weren't healthy? Or were they already separated?

If the mother cat senses something is up with the kitten and that it's probably going to die she might abandon it, but I've never seen one kill her kittens outright. Usually they care for them, sick or well, until the kittens aren't able to nurse anymore (usually because their illness has progressed until they're too weak to suckle).

The only animal I ever saw deliberately kill its offspring was an elk at the zoo once that got spooked and stomped the newborn to death. But elk are really, really dumb.

Thanks for the continued votes, everybody!

We're now being beaten by the big kill shelter in the area. I'm especially ticked at them because they nuked a cerebellar kitten last week that somebody had brought in to have neutered. They called the woman and told her that the kitten had no quality of life and they were euthanizing it.

She had already made her neuter appointment with their clinic when she asked us to take this particular kitten and his siblings. She decided to keep that appointment because it was cheaper for her to have the group done there than at a private vet. She never dreamed they'd kill him or she wouldn't have taken him there. She was crying when she told us.

I was really looking forward to getting him, we have a lot of special needs cats at our place but our last cerebellar cat was adopted out several months ago and I've missed having one around.

This decision was made by a so-called veterinarian at the other shelter who has obviously never owned a cat with this condition. If she had, she'd have known that these animals do very well and are generally happy and loving pets. I know this because I've owned 7 of them myself and have fostered another 10 or 11 for various shelters. They have a balance issue. The extreme cases can have seizures, but this kitten had never had a seizure.

I'm really pissed about this. I'm even more pissed that these morons have moved ahead of us in the voting, because they tell everybody they are no-kill, only euthanizing for medical reasons. The trouble is that their medical reasons are all too often easily curable or don't actually impact the animals quality of life.

Ok, rant and venting over. I'm just really upset about the kitten. According to the owner he played well with his siblings and his toys, used the litter box, ate and drank normally and loved to cuddle with people. He could have lived a very full life and made somebody very happy.

What the FUCK?!

How the hell can they do that? How is that LEGAL without even informing or obtaining consent from the owner?!

"Yeah, I know you just brought your cat in for a check-up, but we killed him instead. Too bad!"

That's completely bullshit.

The kill shelter in question makes everybody using their spay/neuter services sign an agreement with a lot of fine print. Nobody ever actually reads the thing, generally because by the time they get to the counter they've been waiting in line for over an hour and want to kill everybody ahead of them who even looked like they were taking time to read before they signed.

The agreement states that the people are turning their animal over to the shelter and that the shelter has permission to surgicate, treat, etc. They extend the definition of 'treat' to include 'euthanize'.

We wanted to make a huge stink out of it but the woman who actually owned the kitten isn't inclined to pursue the matter. Hopefully when she gets over being sad she'll start to get pissed and change her mind. We want to keep things like this from happening again, but we can't chase this one without the involvement of the kittens' owner.

I'm still hopping mad about it, though. I hate shelters where only 'perfect' animals need apply.

Remember to keep clicking! The best way to stop this stuff is to show 'em that no kill does work!!

While I would like to see this sort of thing happen, too, I'm guessing that without the corroboration of the kitten's (former!) owner, they'd be opening themselves up to slander allegations.

Well....one could always bring your cat up there pretending you want to get it fixed. Then ask them what all that fine print means, what their definition of "treatment" is, and if that includes euthanizing.

I did the outside in pink, too! We're very easy to spot, we just tell people to look for the pink building.

My cousin built the interior for us and about crapped himself when I told him I was painting it pink.
