Eric Giler and his MIT spinoff, WiTricity have suggested the wireless transmission of electricity could be relatively close ... say 18 or so months away.

Now we're not talking about no wires to your home, yet. What is being suggested is that charging cords and batteries will be less of a necessity.

The demonstrations have been impressive, all things considered ... but as of yet the process is only 70-80% as efficient as the wired transmission.

Here's the youtube link, which worked better for me than TED.com's video player.

Didn't think to look on youtube ... that's probably because I tend to lose a brain cell or two reading the responses more than watching the vid.

This stuff is almost like porn to me ... and the last time something had that appeal I invested. Not in the porn.

Pretty cool demo. They need to work on the range though. It's not much better than a cord if I have to put my cell phone within two inches of a wired device to get it to work.

At first he talks about how crappy batteries are, and how we'd be better off without them, but the actual demo part seemed to suggest it's mostly useful for charging said batteries at the moment, rather than replacing them.

I tend to look at the potential of things. Yes, range is currently an issue. Efficiency is an issue ... but you have to acknowledge this as something "just" past infancy.

Tesla was never able to bring this to fruition and we have decades of "not needing" it to the point where it wasn't even on the back burner.

At the very least, if efficiency rises to that of wired transmission, you cut out large amounts of energy for mining (wires) and drilling (plastic insulation). You cut down on construction costs. You cut down on wasted battery life. You reduce vampiric electrical use. You cut down on battery production.

Larger scale is a braingasm.

Imagine driving an electric car in urban areas while not using the battery. Maybe those 30-60 mile stretches of interstate between large towns and cities.

I tend to look at the holocausts in things. Zombies, killer robots, infectious diseases, etc. Billions of different long range magnetic fields, even if they aren't necessarily electromagnetic, are going to have consequences. Did you notice that the guy practically ran between the transmission to show how "safe" it was? Yeah, that was because he wanted to avoid the zombie particles.

Shot guns and chainsaws my friend ... that's all you need for WiTricity safety.

Sure, you make jokes now, but the only thing holding back those gov't mind control chips was that they couldn't figure out how to power them.

Have we figured out yet if tin foil blocks the magnetic fields?

You're worried more about EM fields than the Gayzers?

I know it's not really close but all I keep thinking about is that sucky movie, Pulse.

New frequencies with creepy things coming out at ya.

Now those terrorists planning on inserting explosives into their anal cavities won't have to worry about faulty wiring!
