I'm moving this weekend, unfortunately not out of Georgia, but out of this poopy tiny cottage in the backyard of my skeksis landlord, HOORAY. The only bad think I can think of is that this place was furnished when we moved in so we have to buy a toooonnnn of stuff. We already got a bed and a washer/dryer, but we still need a sofa and an entertainment center cause the one i'm using now won't work, and uh like everything else except dressers and desks and storage, haha.

If anyone here has recently moved and found some nice, inexpensive furniture hidden away somewhere, and if online, NOT exorbitant shipping costs, please let me know.

Also, i'm trying to figure out color schemes cause I plan on painting and stuff, but i'm kind of overwhelmed. So if anyone has some good ideas i'd totally be open to hearing about/looking at them. I think the only thing we've got down so far is that we want Behr's "Emerald Coast" on the living room walls and chocolate-hued furniture. A dark chocolate plushy sofa would be awesome if anyone knows of a good one, cuz i've been having a bitch of a time trying to find one. :D

I'm in the similar situation myself. I'm having a house built and will be done in a couple months. When I move in I'll be moving in with almost no furnishings. Lately I've been checking out garage sales to see what deals I can find there and the local IKEA store. Good luck with your search.

.

I love the idea of chocolate-hued furniture because I sometimes spill chocolate and hey, it's already clean! That's gross.

I have nothing constructive to contribute but well wishes! :welcome:

Oh and, I want to check out garage sales but tbh, i'm wary about stuff like that if the purchase is fabric, like a sofa. I don't want to end up with bed bugs or some shit in my new place. :/

Oh we'd just buy a quart to test it first. It just looks better than the lighter shade from what we can tell, with the chocolate.

Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of color on walls. But I think starting out with something so bold on all the walls might be a shock. But if someone is looking for high drama then dark walls are a good choice. I'm just afraid of bold colors maybe. I like the light!

Here is a general dark green wall color:

And maybe it's just the furniture in that room but it seems like a very formal color to me. And sort of dungeonesque.

We were standing in Home Depot with the shade card things and we couldn't decide between Cozumel and Emerald Coast (which both look different online btw, slightly). I like them both a ton but when there's a chocolate card sandwiched between the two, the darker looks better. But yeah we'll have to test before we paint the room of course.

It's not like you can't repaint if it turns out to be too dark. I'm just too lazy so I take a more conservative approach to color.

Yup that's true. One thing though about that pic you posted - there's like no natural light in there. We've got big double class doors in our new living room, so that won't be an issue.

Green walls and chocolate furry couch?! Sounds nice, big comfy brown couches are full of win.

At my aunts house, she had shades of green on her walls. What she did was like have two walls opposite from each other one shade, and the other walls a similar or well suited shade. It looks very modern and chic, and looks nice. Now she was like pastel colors, but in the same style.

It might be too cyan-ish for the chocalate furniture, but colors always look different when they are actually on the wall. It's the TRIM that will make or break the room I always say

I have a teal accent wall in my living room. I love love love it, but I think that if all three walls were teal it would be too much. Teal/blue-green rooms always remind me of little boys' rooms decked out with Marlins or Dolphins gear, though, so non-SoFla natives might like all-teal rooms a little better.

With the right furniture, it won't look formal, stuffy or dungeonesque though. If nothing else, walking through Ikea might give you color and design ideas you can use with sturdier furniture from elsewhere.

that will be a dark room. bone or off white makes a room airy looking compared to colors. Unless it is a pastel, I would use the darker colors for accent. Try the base board and put up a ceiling moulding to paint that emerald. You will probably like it more. In the end, it is your taste that matters though. In my younger days, I was hell with an airless and paintbrush and my free professional advice is worth all you just paid for it.

Why no craig's list?

If it's your first real place with your first set of furniture get some used pieces to hold you over til you're ready to spend real money on stuff you're going to keep.

My couch and love seat in my living room were hand me downs from my grandparents. I'm pretty sure those two pieces of furniture were as old as me because I've seen pictures of me as a toddler on them... They've been moved all over the country, had dogs, kids, etc, not pretty but still functional, smell free, and sturdy. I had them for 6 years and this week bought real furniture so I sold them for 30 bucks.

Don't feel like you have to get everything now, used and hand me downs are where you start and you slowly replace them as you get the funds (don't do store credit cards unless you've got the cash to pay them off). But that's me I wait til I can pay for something without impacting my day to day expenses.

Now I've got this gigantic sofa, this thing is a freaking monster, the last of the pieces will be delivered tomorrow so I'll take a pic when I get it all arranged.

Craigslist is rough to deal with if you don't have the time. You CAN find nice things if you're patient, but it can take a while. And if you do find something, you have to hope you're the first to respond, hope the person can wait until you can borrow/rent a truck, hope the person is honest, try to arrange a time for both of you to meet up so you can look at the furniture, try to arrange a time that's okay for both of you that you can take the furniture...

I love craigslist, but sometimes it can be just such a pain in the ass.

I've gone and picked stuff up that the wife has bought and never had an issue, the area might have something to do with it though. People in the mid West are, for the most part, pretty nice.

Ikea is great for cheap short-term solutions -- but people should always be on the look-out for cheap LONG-term furniture.

By long-term I mean furniture that is not biodegradable with a half-life of 20 yrs.

*disclaimer* 90% of our furniture is from ikea -- but we've moved across the country, back and forth, 3 times in 6 years. And there is a 50% chance we'll move back to CA within the next 4 years.

Yup, already planning on doing that this weekend.

Why no craig's list?

Because I don't want furniture that was used by someone I don't know. You never know how honest they are about stuff, and I don't think it's worth the time or money. I'd rather spend more and know 100% that there's no bed bugs or other infestation hiding somewhere I can't see with a good once-over.

If it's your first real place with your first set of furniture get some used pieces to hold you over til you're ready to spend real money on stuff you're going to keep.

It's not, and it's not. I've merely been living in GA the past 5 years, heh. I have some furniture in NY in my grandmother's basement, but it would cost less to buy temporary replacement stuff here than to ship all that shit down, especially since i'm not staying in GA indefinitely.

Don't feel like you have to get everything now, used and hand me downs are where you start and you slowly replace them as you get the funds (don't do store credit cards unless you've got the cash to pay them off). But that's me I wait til I can pay for something without impacting my day to day expenses.

I don't, and don't worry, I know how to budget myself. I think I should've been more clear about the information I was looking for here, hehe. I was just wondering if anyone knew of some discount and/or online stores that had decent prices for quality merchandise, that perhaps didn't have ridiculous shipping costs. And of course i'd love to hear if anyone has a room in their house that they absolutely love, let me know what color scheme you have! Cause that's where i'm drawing a blank. I already know what we want to do with the living room, which is what I posted, but i'm unsure where I want to go with the rest and I wanted some input if anyone had some ideas. I appreciate that some of you think it might be too dark, but yeah, that's totally wasted breath.

As far as budgeting and stuff, i'm plenty good with that already. :D

Hit up a GoodWill store. This is back-to-school time for college though, so the pickings might be slim, but you can probably find some hardwood furniture or tables there on the cheap. A little cleanup and some tung oil will do wonders for old wood.

That wall hue is fabulous! Hey one thing I have learned about the bright colors is they always end up looking a shade lighter than they did on paper, so make sure you are comfortable with the Cozumel!

I am very much in favor of bright colored walls. You really have to have your accessories down pat though if you go bright on the walls. For my bright walled rooms I went neutral on the furniture with one other bright color for the small accessories (like candle sticks and accent pillows). Dont mix your brights unless the color is extremely complementary. So no orange with the Emerald Coast. Maybe fuschia, lime green or marigold.

Also, if you have metals anywhere in your room (table frames, etc) commit to using the exact same color for all of them. The metals in a room make the mood. Example: Silvers gives it a cool vibe...bronze a warm one. Your chocolate sofa leaves you open for either but after you determine what metals you will use then you can choose the accent color. Warm examples: Marigold, Coral. Cool examples: Fuschia, Lime, Cobalt.

One more thing. Dont be afraid of patterns!!

Sorry bout the book, summary of suggestions include: Emerald Coast on all walls...neutral colored large accessores and furniture, match your metals (!), and a fun perky color (complimentary of walls) for the accent pillows and small accessories. Patterns!!!

Love Craigslist. I always use it. Except have a baseball bat and bear spray on hand for a meetup. You know...just in case you feel like serial killing. (Or defending against crazies, whateva)

To further explain my philosophy about room coloring, examples from my house (rented!):

1) Garden room: Pale yellow walls, bamboo and golden pine furniture, pale leaf green large accessories and a touch of cornflower blue accents. Some muted gold frames but otherwise no metals in the room. Large accessories are wood with green cushions. Focal point is a large french chair that combines all three colors in a flower pattern.

My philosophy here was that I can combine multiple hues when they are pale without making the color scheme a distraction. It is fun and I can move some things out if I get tired of the blue.

2)Greek Room

Sky blue walls (bright). (Mural of an orchard through a window on primary wall) Muted fawn suede couches. Fawn leather recliner. Heavy bronze scrollwork coffeetable. White and pale coral accessories. Few olive green things here and there. Bronze coptic crosses on the wall.

One bright color on walls. Two coral pillows arent bright but contrast the blue.

Yes, I name my rooms. :-X

Of the bathroom colors I immediately LOVE Club soda, White sapphire and Clear Water. Bathrooms for me are an understated afterthought. My bathrooms always end up feeling etheral, like the inside of a waterfall. I dont like shocking colors in the potty room!

My living room and kitchen are a pale yellow and we blended in the gold flakes so that light makes it sparkle. Bedroom is a light coffee/mocha, kids room(s) are bright green and yellow. Bathrooms I wanted dark with wrought iron but my opinion doesn't matter, one is done in grass and sky blue with frogs and shit. The master bath is light red I think (I'm not really allowed in the master bath/closet).

Primer, then semi-gloss latex.

As for the furniture - I'm a big fan of go big or go home. In other words, either buy cheap stuff from Goodwill or buy something you'll keep for 20 years. Estate sales are a FANTASTIC source of cheap furniture you can keep for 20 years, giving you the best of both worlds. If you're close to a big city, you should have choices galore. Even if you don't find good stuff the first time, make friends with the person running it - s/he may give you priority the next go round.

I got my bedroom set as a present - my grandma bought it at an estate sale when I was in High School for $150. Had 2 of the pieces professionally refinished (cost - about $300), did the rest myself (cost - about $50). All in, around $500, and I swear this set will last me forever and is one of the nicest I've ever seen.

Bought some "new" furniture for our cottage from Goodwill this past summer - got 3 dining room chairs for $5 each, an ottoman for $5 (which we recovered ourselves, costing us about $15), and a wooden rocking chair for $10. Upholstered stuff from Goodwill is sketchy, I agree, but it's worth a shot.

Good luck. Happy new place.

Putting in an offer on house #3 tomorrow - to close in 3 weeks (EEK) - wish me luck!

Yeah no used upholstered stuff, however wood stuff might be okay. I have some stuff to drop off at Goodwill before we move anyway, so i'll most likely check it out.

No need for primer because the walls are freshly painted white. And I was thinking eggshell finish for the majority of the rooms, and semi-gloss for the bathrooms and kitchen. Or did you mean in response to my question about the particle board/faux wood dressers and stuff? If so, <3 <3

And I know I said it in another thread, but you seriously need to post pics of the new house when you get it.

Do NOT use oil-based paint on anything, including laminate, because it scratches ridiculously easy.

I recommend doing a light sanding of the laminate piece, then spray-paint a primer on it as they have special types that will bond to laminate, and then use latex paint over that.

Oh and I think a bedroom is the perfect place for something dramatic that you may not want to do in your more lived-in rooms. After a horrible dusty-rose color in our last apartment we went for the gusto this time, lol. Yeah it's real hit or miss. I think I got my last nice coffee table there for 8 bucks when it was selling for 99 at the real Rooms to go. All it had was a barely noticeable indentation from what looked like a box cutter gone too deep on one of the legs.

Anyways after a bit of searching and some weeks I filled my apartment fairly cheap with shit that lasted years.

Atlanta Friday fucking traffic makes me want to slit puppy throats. Fucking shit, cockmongering douchenaps. I spent half the day driving around in bumper to bumper traffic to pick up my fucking couch. I barely got any moving done. :( Gonna be a long day tomorrow.

So awesome though, so so so awesome... after we were done with the couch, we stopped at this Chinese joint right behind our complex to try it out, and holy fuck, it was good. Being from NY I guess i'm a total food snob when it comes to stuff like pizza and chinese, and I can't find anything down here that comes even close, even the same ballpark... but this joint was fucking GOOD. Until tonight, i'd never had good lo mein in this poopy state. Hooray for moving!!!!11

I can't believe so many guys on the PC read this, and hasn't commented with the obligatory, "Well, you ain't never laid yo' ass on mah dick, that be the most comfortin' feelin' in th' world."

I guess that just goes to show you have the most perverted mind on the forum.

My thoughts on moving:

It sucks.

My thoughts on being moved:

I can't wait. Congrats, diethx :)

My million dollar idea (yea, I know, not gonna happen), stolen from working in the shop at a car dealership:

Parts are shipped in these uber-sturdy but lightweight plastic stackable totes (not flimsy like rubbermaid). They should rent these to people who are moving. I'd take them over boxes any day. No crushed boxes, no tape necessary.

I'd be down with that, I have like four rooms filled with cardboard boxes. At least I have (more than) four rooms now though, right?

While it might be a fucking mess and will probably take at least a week to be done, at least everything is IN the apartment and I think i'm done picking up new stuff for awhile. This has been a hellish weekend with all the running around. And I have two exams over the next week and a half. :scared:
