I'm at 499 Crafting Ranks, and have been there for a while.....

Should I wait until I master crafting to try and construct a perfect hammer fully?

Right now I am doing handles and saving the best pieces.

Saving 'best' pieces made at 499 skill will do you no good.

'best' pieces aren't really 'best' pieces until you master.

best is a subjective term. It means it's the best YOU can make.

And you still suck.

If you appraise a best piece you make when a master it is a "superior" quality. Best below that is at the most, an "elegant" piece

elegant pieces + best vise attempt = superior hammer

superior pieces + best vise attempt = perfect hammer

(and just to be clear, 1 superior and 1 elegant piece + best vise = still superior)

yup. I always appraise all my pieces before i vise to make sure i didn't grab the wrong one.
