Okay, guys, we get it: mauls are mechanically advantageous. But seriously, why do you Onoir types have to work how awesome mauls are into EVERY SINGLE conversation in game? It's all you guys ever talk about.
Sheesh.

I'm rather partial to mattocks. Nothing wears plate.

and? mauls are superior against chain (same DF, but +4 AvD)
equal against scale
only 1 AvD less on unarmored
leather is the only really clear advantage for the mattock...and you shouldn't have a problem with leather wearers if you're using a twohander, regardless of base :-P
My rationale has always been...i'll take the extra punch when i need it against the heavily armored opponents, instead of overkill factor when i don't.
p.s. the only reason I made this response is to spite the OP

Yes but how many mauls are there with claid weighting? How many 10x mauls are there? Not many of either but you can own both in mattocks. Well worth the tiny disadvantage.

I've actually been considering looking for a good mattock since I can't find a good maul I wanna pay for.
I kinda wish they'd do a little maintenance on the weapon DFs and make some of the other bases more attractive. Right now there isn't a whole lot of point in using a base 8 over a maul or mattock unless all you want is raw damage on light armor targets or you have a nice claid.
That and add a base 8 polearm =D

There are 2 4x claid weighted mattocks (mine and the dupe). There is the one Tsin had brought up to near 10x but it was never close to claid weighting. There is also one +35 weighted 4x mattock. I also have a 10x mattock but those are strangely hard to find, mattocks weren't popular until the crit ranking changes that made crush very attractive. There was one other at least but that player took it with him when he left. There could be others but I don't know about them.

Durgrimst has the +35 weighted 4x one and he's looking to sell it, last I knew.
Edit: I sold it to him, because it makes no sense to have a weapon worth more than a grand to me any more. I'm using a 4x HCW maul now and it might as well be the same weapon on 70% of the hits.

Mauls do rock. I have two awesome ones: a 7x permablessed and an 8x perfect vultite.
But at cap, I'll grant you the mechanical difference between two-handers is marginal. When your endroll is over 200, is +10 or 20 going to make much difference?
They're all pretty effective, though I love the extra DS of the high-enchant.

Yeah...I will admit that with my maul I can no longer pull off those 108 endroll insta-kills that I could with the +35 weighted mattock, but rolling a 108 is a fluke anyway. I'm usually rolling more like 400+.

I generally agree but I assume you guys are warriors? Since my character is a ranger and his AS generally is garbage (lowest of all the semi and square classes) it actually matters to me since my average end roll is probably closer to 160 than 260.

clearly everyone should be using a lochaber

Except one handed edged weapons, no matter how nice, are crap.

lochaber is not one handed, unless of course I want it to be

But at least you guys are getting it out here instead of in game, where it just sounds OOC and stupid.
I will say this, though:

Not all weapon bases are supposed to be awesome. Some are purposefully sub-optimal so that certain critters can be made a little less dangerous. (Although when it comes to two-handers, this is less useful. A flamberge, say, still hits pretty hard.)

then you just give it a smaller weapon base, that actually looks like whatever the critter should look like. critters can cheat like that.
some weapon bases need some love, as they're just useless...i'm looking at you, scimitars and whipblades!

But then that'd be even more confusing and misrepresentative. Imagine the bitching from people whose alterations got turned down!

Yeah, I do wish they'd give up and just make scimitars into base speed 3 weapons. Then I'd have all kinds of fun single-edged options available.

Scimitars are getting nerfed soon due to how overpowered they currently are.

nah, I don't. I use a 5x superior maul as my primary weapon and I don't see much point in getting anything better yet.

Except, a lot of the base 8 weapons are weaker then the base 7 weapons. Look at scimitars, look at 1h bastard swords vs the base 5 weapons.
I don't think their intention is to push people into a limited number of mechanically advantageous bases, but that's why they do currently. Some bases are just unusable outside RP (scimitars anyone?) Awl-pikes and lances are pretty much identical weapons so reduce the DFs a bit on awl-pikes and drop then to base 8. Things like that, not that all weapons need to be "good" There's just not much reason to have all of the unused weapon bases.
