Much like Gemstone IV, these boards are now boring and repetitive. Either we have the Political threads with the Republican, insane, irrational, douchebags who have arguments for the sake of arguing because they have so much hate that they can't think straight or you have the democrats who have made up their minds and can't budge a little bit on anything regardless of how many facts are thrown at them. Political threads blow, not because of the content but because of the people who post.
Then we get our social threads and off-topic threads. Those used to be fun and people would post funny shit. Youtubes, pictures, funny articles, games and shit like that. Now they are just posting complete nonsense that isnt remotely funny or its something that had been posted previously. Like when Tisket posted that thread about the wolf t-shirts. Everyone remember that? :love:
Then you have the rep threads which is just a complete waste of time. They pretty much turned into a pornfest....actually, those threads are okay.
Last but not least there are the Gemstone content threads but lets face it, nobody plays gemstone anymore. Poor Fallen, he is the only one keeping those threads alive. :yes:
Oh, I almost forgot about the Sean2 threads of "my life sucks". Those used to be fun to read when the shtick was fresh but now its just sad.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that really there are only a handful of you guys/gals that were actually down to earth and cool (you probably know who you are) and the rest of you are completely insane and obsessive (you probably don't know who you are).

While it's got a forum-rant index of 100, I'd have to agree on most counts.
I've stopped into the "Latest Threads" section of these boards once a week or so for years since I stopped playing, just to see what was going on in the game.
Now you'd be hard pressed to find anything actually GS related in here.

Just curious, but what if Gemstone 4 was to go ahead and lower it's regular subscription price to say, $10.00 a month? Thats only $120.00 a year. I would pay that.
That might bring some more people to the game. Might help a little bit.
A second option would be to go even further, and lower the normal subscription price from $15.00 to $5.00 a month. Now you're talking. The fact is that there are some really good FREE MUDS springing up all over the place. MUDS themselves will never die. It's just a fact. There will always be people who love to play MUDS. The problem with Gemstone 4, however, is that it's a great MUD, but it charges too much now for it's monthly fees. And the World Wide Recession is not helping things. If it lowered it's basic subscription to $5.00 a month I guarantee you that people will jump on board. More people and in the end the company would probably make the same as they are making now with less people paying more.
The last option, and I don't think it bodes too well for those who get payed By Simutronics for Gemstone 3, is to go ahead and eventually just make Gemstone 4 free of charge. Just like some of the other MUDS like those over at http://www.ironrealms.com/index.php. I mean those are great muds over there, and as far as I know they don't charge anything. It was only a matter of time before people started creating MUDS that were just as good as Gemstone 4, so why not just catch up with the times and make it free? That would obviously increase the player base by an enormous amount. I've had people tell me that Gemstone 4 looks really cool, and that they want to play it, but that they don't have the money. I mean is this really what Gemstone 4 is all about at this point? It should be available for all to play. Because it really is a staple of MUDS.
Instead of everyone talking about Gemstone 4 dying, why don't we (those who love the game) talk about different ways of keeping it going? I mean really, there is absolutely NO REASON whatsoever that Gemstone 4 should ever have to go away. Unless computers become obsolete or the power grid gets knocked out by some kind of disaster or something. Other than that, if I was SIMU corp, I would never take it away from those who wish to play it. That would just be a waste.

Not easily. But one alternative is not to play at all. Graphical games are certainly out.
I know I have coded a little to make it easier on them. Brief commands for combat and rooms, commands to separate info from longer lists (eg. xp instead of a long info/score type command). I don't code the game specifically for the visually impaired but I also don't mind adding a little support if requested.

What's your game? My sister is blind and plays MUDS with her screen reader. I never tried GS with her reader, would the java version work...anyone know? She uses JAWS.

The shit is creepy man. The reader goes SOOO fast I can't even make out a word it's saying. Think Steven Hawking on meth, crack, and coke at the same time. It's really amazing how her brain has been wired. Braille for instance...I can't read one letter with my fingers even though I know what the dots represent. She can read braille just as fast as we can read written words.

Hah..yeah, when I was an asshole kid. But she's played on baseball teams (using a beeping baseball), rides her bike by herself, and somehow managed to get around the Boston Ts with no cane. Maybe she's faking. That bitch!

My sister is blind and plays MUDS with her screen reader.
The Blind Mudders information and discussion center (http://tbmic.jiglu.com/) may be a useful resource for her, if she is not already aware of it (or similar sites).
I never tried GS with her reader, would the java version work...anyone know? She uses JAWS.
That would be a good question for Simutronic's Customer Support.
I believe ZMUD (from zuggsoft.com (http://www.zuggsoft.com/index.php)) used to support Gemstone, and they had a plugin called "MUDReader" that used Windows Text-2-Speech. Not sure if either is still supported, as they have moved on to CMUD now.
