at 70ish, some dogmatist and mage boxes run a little higher than -800

and also, you won't be disarming more than 50% of their traps i wouldn't think

Just jumped into locksmithing for the first time, and while the 403/Picking links there are helpful, there's a distinct lack of actual math on the Disarming page.
I assume that detecting traps is something like:
(Disarm Skill) + (Perception Skill) + (INT bonus) + (Trap value (negative)) +d100 = attempt result
81-100 = disarmed trap
61-80 = see trap size
41-60 = within your abilities message
0-40 = might blow yourself up
something like that?
Edit: My locksmith is 2x Picking, 1x Disarm, 2x Perception (an archer-picker). Can I reasonably expect to detect my own boxes? Disarm them with lore? Pick them? Should I expect to pick my own with or without lore? What level should I shoot for at the above training before I even attempt locksmithing?

Yep, the detecting part is about correct. I believe DEX Bonus also helps, as well as 404 and 402. Also, there is a trap detection modifier as well. For example, a scarab is harder to detect than scales of the same trap difficulty.
Disarming is separate from the detecting attempt, and is pretty basic, which is probably why there's no math.
Disarm skill + lore + dex bonus - trap difficulty + d100 = result
Where
<= 0 = You blow up
1 - 100 = Try again
101+ = Success
Obviously, you can have open rolls on either end (fumble or roll 101+). So if you roll bad enough, you can still set off a -80 trap with 200 skill. On the other hand, if you get lucky, you can get a -220 trap with 200 skill.

That disarm formula is pretty straightforward, that is good to know. Any suggestions on when I can start reliably detecting/disarming/picking my own boxes?
Thanks for the info, Victorj :)

I would probably wait till around 7-8 trains or so, since you double. With 16 ranks, you'd be able to use alum, which has a nice 2.3 modifier. It's about the best pick you can use till kelyn at 25 ranks. Of course, alum is about as strong as a toothpick, so you may break a few just by glancing at it.
Is it possible for a non-rogue to get/use a wedge?

Get yes (if they know a rogue). Use no (it's a rogue guild skill).

Bummer.
New question! Scarabs!
Is the difficulty rating for knocking them out of the box at all related to the difficulty of disarming the bug once it's down?
I dumped more dodge (yay mass spells at low levels) to pick up 10 ranks of AS. I managed to disarm a red scarab today after getting the "you are doubtful of your success" message five times in a row (had a priest on hand, so I just chanced it after the fifth disarm try). It'd be nice to know when I can expect to get them, since I can't always have a priest babysitting me when a bug shows up.

Generally, if you can knock it out of the box, you can disarm it on the ground. The more AS (and, to a certain extent, the more disarm skill you have), the more sure of your own success you will be.
Also, remember that the more times you fiddle with it, the less it ends up being worth.

Since we're on the subject of lockpicks, does anyone know what bonuses the uber vaalins that you can make give?

Yep, i remember the value decrease thing. I figured it was okay since it was my first scarab and I was very unsure of myself.
Any idea how much AS I need to actually tell with any accuracy if I've disarmed it?

No, my lockpicking character has no AS whatsoever, but I hear that less is required as you get more picking skill. It should be pretty easy to figure out, though: just grab, say, 10 ranks of it, and try disarming an easy scarab. If that doesn't help, pick up another couple ranks, rinse, repeat.

I never took more than 10 ranks of AS and I never had a problem. At 59 I fixskilled to a new build and ditched all of my AS and I haven't had a problem.

That's not a bad idea, I'll try that. Yay 30-day insta-migration =)

Except I'm only level 10 ;)
Honestly, I wouldn't care if I wasn't finding tons of red scarabs and even one translucent scarab on freakin' KAPPA boxes already.
Thanks again, guys, this is very helpful info!
For the record, with 15 ranks of AS and 30 ranks of Disarm, I am getting the second best messaging on scarab attempts. In case anyone was wondering about numbers :)
So, next question: is the exact benefit of 403 known? Is it possible to calculate precisely how hard a lock I could pick (without an open roll, of course), if I know my skill, DEX bonus, and lockpick modifier?
