Everytime I see the commerical for this, I keep thinking it will be the third installment for the 28 [days] trilogy. But then I realize the next is 28 months later.

Seems hokey to me -- I'll probably watch it anyway.
The alien signs they keep using/showing look retarded.

This is getting rave reviews. I'm thinking this might be the coolest movie of the year and probably my favorite. I have a feeling it's gonna be something we've never seen before in cinema. I wouldn't doubt this movie.
It's totally independent, free of the bullshit from a major studio. Having Peter Jackson as ep only helps. I'm stoked

Read the review from massawyrm at aintitcool.com. I'm on my phone or I'd post a link. It's in the middle of the middle part of the page.
This is easily my most anticipated movie of the year

I can't wait for this to open. It's been awhile since there was a movie that I was anticipating opening, as most movies turned out anymore are pure crap. Hopefully this wont be another Cloverfield and piss me the hell off.

Cloverfield was cool in the theater. I imagine it's a complete bore if you watch it at home.
D9 looks unreal.

The aliens in District 9 remind me of Zoidberg.

On a side note, while I google'd Zoidberg to find an image to stick in here, and found all sorts of (NASTY) Futurama fan "art". I am disturbed.

Just got home from checking it out...and it's definitely one to see in the theatres. It's pretty raw and savage, and I kinda felt the need to go surround myself in a pile of happy kittens after it was over.
I still can't believe the main guy, Sharlto Copley, has never acted in film before. He delivers through the entire movie, and the special effects (save for the Walker, which I thought stood out kinda poorly compared to the rest of the seamless CG) were pretty fantastic.

Was it basically about how shitty humanity would be to aliens if they ever came here? I've had my fill of movies which try to point out in vivid detail what shitbags the human race is as a whole.

I always liked:

I liked it a lot. Everyone (aliens and humans) come out looking like shitbags with points of sympathy and empathy for both sides every once in a while. It was unsubtle and yet not heavy-handed in its messages. Well done.

I loved it. I went to see it yesterday afternoon and I'm still thinking about it. I'm a big fan of original movies, so when an original sci-fi comes out about aliens on Earth I'm stoked.
Everyone should see this.
I really enjoyed it. Having lived for some time in South Africa I got an extra kick out of a few things.
"You can keep it as a memento of your first abortion." I was one of like only two people in the theatre who laughed at that line. Awkward.

I did a lot of laughing by myself.
Like the abortion line and everytime someone popped because the alien gun hit them, etc.
I think it's akward that everyone else wasn't laughing. Clearly they have no sense of humor.

I heard a few giggles when that dude in the wheel chair exploded.
I'm having a hard time remembering the abortion bit though...
I thought the movie was awesome. Usually when I go see a movie I find myself predicting what's going to happen next and picking apart the story... This movie held my attention enough to just let it happen.

When they come across the shack with all the alien eggs near when they first start delivering eviction notices and Wiccus starts unplugging them and then he gives the black guy without the bulletproof vest a piece of the alien egg feeder as a souvenir.
Also as a funny aside one of my sister's ex boyfriends was a south african guy named Wiccus. I got a kick out of that.

Ohhh right... Before the flame thrower comes in. We had a chuckle at that too.
I worked with a South African guy for a while... Nice guy but he put mayonaise on his pizza, which made me both confused and happy that I wasn't from South Africa.

What's that cost...30 million? And it's made five trillion?
One of my favorite films of '09. It's like an indie film without Parker Posey. Dark, claustrophobic, metaphors out the wazoo. And the main character was such a NERD! He didn't become ubercool at the end. He was still a nerd, but now he likes cat food.
I thought it was engaging and engrossing. Even if you don't know much about S. Africa/apartheid (and, according to the latest from the Nat. Center for Ed. Statistics, most US kidz haven't a clue about it either), it's still a compelling flick. Reminded me of Alien Nation and that crappy Freddy Krueger V show.
I can only imagine how crappy it would have been had Michael Bay or other Hollywood twits gotten their mits on this. Oy vey!
I liked the little kid prawn. He was fun! Wheeee!

The first hour or so was "WTF! LET'S WALK OUT NOW AND DEMAND OUT MONEY BACK!!" for me... the last part was ok.

I'm amazed that during the lengthy process involved in making a flick, those behind-the-scenes seriously believed this movie was a good idea and kept the project moving forward.

Pissed off aliens come here to take their people home.. and kick some human ass in the process. Yea, I could watch that.

Not sure who it was that said it, because they didn't sign the grey-rep, but you obviously went to the show high.
"NOT lots of holes in plot. I don't like your assessment of it, but you are a happy dude so yay!"
Seriously?
Note: there are some spoilers in my list of questions here.
Why did they come to Earth? Why did they stop over that particular city? Why did they behave like rodents when they were an advanced civilization capable of interstellar travel? Why did the "command module" fall off the ship? Why was there only one of them who had half a brain? Why didn't the guys in the tech lab just make a glove out of one of their hands to shoot the guns? How did the humans learn to speak their language? If the ship was able to make the journey home, only needing to be piloted, why did they stop in the first place? If the larger ship could be remote accessed to activate and use the tractor beam, why didn't they do that earlier? If all they needed was a fuel cell, why didn't they contact the aliens on the ship and have them send one down? Was there only ONE detachable vessel on that big ass mother ship? Why didn't the aliens on the ship send a rescue team for the pod that fell off? Was there no backup system in the chain of command? Was that ONE alien the only one and there was no second in command? Was the entire compliment of the ship a bunch of mindless drones that could not function without direct commands? Why did they crap everywhere in the ship while it was sitting there for three months before the humans cut through? When the ship stopped moving did the toilets vanish? Why were the Nigerians buying weapons from them if they could not be fired? How were the weapons being constructed? Were they falling from the ship too? Why was there not a team of humans on the ship making sure it was in a good state of repair?
I could go on but it would be pointless. These are just a few of what could be 100 questions that were not addressed, let alone answered, by the movie.
My assessment stands. Full Of Holes.

Your plot holes all deal with the exposition, that's the part you're stuck on right? You don't like movies that don't have a nice tidy opening? They don't explain everything nice and easy and compact for you. Fair enough. That's what you like and this movie was AWFUL in that regard.
I don't know either, but then again I didn't care. They set it up as a live camera-shot + documentary the entire film (complete with CCTV shots for a portion of it). What we have is what we see on the screen. It didn't matter why they got there, they were there and that's where the story picked up (I'm watching it again on my computer. A nice R5 copy too!).
Hollywood's already planning on prequels and sequels, so maybe they'll explain it all. I still wouldn't care. The movie I'm watching is about a nerdy guy and aliens whose current situation resembled (or resembles, I don't know much about S. Africa in 2009 and don't care to know much about S. Africa in 2009) apartheid. Plus the aliens weren't cute ET-like things, but they also weren't disgusting Alien-type things either.
I loved the Nigerian part. I can't think of a single country more noted for dishonest scams and sinister people. They've got a rich billion princes in turmoil there and it only grows with every passing day.

Although I do have a minor problem with a plot hole--how Nerd knew how to use ANY of their technology. I dunno, I'll use realistically suspend my disbelief there and be happy with a 2009 sci-fi movie that isn't the usual crapformers.

The aliens had been there for 20 years. He knew their language. When he had the alien arm they had him firing weapons. Who knows what else they had him experiment with.
You can easily suspend your belief with everything else, like why only one alien had any kind of intelligence, or that they sold their weapons for CAT FOOD?! But that the nerd knew how to use their stuff... this is perplexing? He wasn't even that good at it. The robot got fuxored. And yes, it was minor.
