Sean Bean will play Ned Stark. He was Boromir in Lord of the Rings.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000293/

Mark Addy will play King Robert. His most recognizable roles are as (unfortunately) Fred Flintstone and the armourer guy who was one of Heath Ledger's companions in A Knight's Tale.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004692/

Kit Harrington will play Jon Snow. He is, apparently, a new comer.

Jack Gleeson will play Joffrey Lannister, he's done a little work as a child actor including a bit part in Batman Begins.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0322416/

Harry Lloyd will play Viserys. He starred in a 26 episodes of the BBC production of Robin Hood. If you look at his google image search you can definitely see him as a cruel character like Viserys.

Peter Dinklage had already been announced as Tyrion Lannister.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0227759/

Still no word on who will play Danerys.

Can't see Sean Bean sticking around for a (well half) series.

Mark Addy most well known role is probably "The Full Monty". Hilarious movie.

-Richard.

Interesting. It will be interesting to see who else plays the rest of the Stark and Lannister clans.

What a great friggin series of books. Definitely at the top of my list for recent fantasy series. J.V. Jones newer series starting with Cavern of Black Ice is also quite good. Can't wait to see how this movie turns out.

Is it bad I just can't see Sean Bean playing Ned Stark? Oh, god...I hope they make it awesome.

I think he'll be a great Ned Stark actually. He has that affected dignity and arrogant pride. Danerys makes or breaks this series. They have to knock it out of the park with her.

Is a premiere date set yet? I'm not upgrading to HBO until a week before!

It's still a pilot. Has roughly a 50% chance of getting picked up.

Ned Stark was never arrogant or prideful.

It's been so long since the last book that I've pretty much forgotten who any of these characters are.

Ned Stark was never arrogant or prideful.

Depends on interpretation. His sense of duty and stoicism overshadowed any other trait. But he was prideful in his dealings with John Snow, regardless of the feelings he had for John's mother.

I cant pinpoint any arrogance in my recollection. That trait was clearly monopolized by the Lannister clan.

Oooh, I totally forgot about those. Does she get it on with one of the dothraki ones, or the hot blonde?

Dany learns bed tricks from the blonde that dies in the wastes. She also has some action with one of her freed bed slave girls, I think Irri.

Really looking forward to seeing who they cast as her and Cersei! And Margaery, and Arianne.

I originally said "arrogant pride". Stay split it up. Obviously you can interpret characters in many different ways but I always thought Ned had an arrogant pride about his stoicism. Obviously it's not the same way as you see arrogance defined in most stories "I ARE BEST AND U TEH SUX" but I felt it was an important undercurrent. Should be interesting to see what way Bean plays him, I never saw Ned as the entirely selfless martyr, but a man who was proud of his clean living. Not a clean living man for the sake of clean living.

HBO is filling out the cast of its fantasy pilot "Game of Thrones" with the addition of former "New Amsterdam" star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and several others.

The group joins the previously cast lead Sean Bean as battle-weary Ned Stark, who leaves his home to serve the king. Mark Addy, Kit Harington, Jennifer Ehle, Jack Gleeson, Peter Dinklage and Harry Lloyd also star.

In the adaptation of the George R.R. Martin fantasy-book series, Coster-Waldau will play Jaime Lannister, one of the king's guards and a ruthless usurper of the previous king. The actor, most recently seen in Ron Moore's Fox pilot "Virtuality," is repped by WME, Impression and Independent Talent Group.

Another addition is Tamzin Merchant (Showtime's "The Tudors"), who'll play Daenerys, an exiled teenage princess.

Also new to the cast: Richard Madden ("Hope Springs") as Stark's eldest son, Robb; Iain Glen ("Into the Storm") as Ser Jorah Mormont, a disgraced knight; Alfie Allen ("The Other Boleyn Girl") as Theon, Stark's young ward; Sophie Turner, as Stark's eldest daughter, Sansa; Maisie Williams as Stark's young tomboy daughter, Arya.

HBO still has a few more roles to fill in the large ensemble cast of "Thrones," one of the more buzzed-about titles on the premium network's development slate. The pilot shoots in Ireland in October.

David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, Guymon Casady, Carolyn Strauss, Vincent Gerardis and Martin are executive producing.

You can check out GRRM blog for photos of the actors.
