I am an artist and I sketch when I feel like it because I have a talent and its relaxing. Since I got back into gemstone I have the urge to create a portrait of my character but I dont want to do it by hand. No, I want to do it on the pc starting from scratch. no scanning anything or editing an existing image. I know about photoshop but I have never used it so not sure if it has a feature to create an image from scratch. If you know of anything that is free or cheap (dont want to spend a whole lot of money) and can make good art I would appreciate the info. :thanx:

I'm a graphic artist for a living, and I'm also one of those rare ones that can draw with a pencil and paper. You can draw in Photoshop (the brush tool is no big secret), but you'll never get the line control like you would with pencil and paper. Short of buying some kind of tablet, I'd highly suggest you at least start your drawing by hand and then scan it in for finish work.
Unless you want your portrait to look like...

If you're going to make portraits, you're going to have to do them by hand first. Unless you want to spend a TON of time in Illustrator, or spend alot of money on hardware. Draw, scan, trace, vector.
3d isn't easy or fast, especially textures. Do you have any experience with any 3D programs?

yeah I know if I tried to do it all by the brush tool it would look like crap. What I want to do is make a 3d portrait of my character and it not look cartoony or anything.

Just draw it. It might take a few tries to get it right. The 3D will come in with proper shading. Or you could just draw the basic outlines and then use CS to color. But a real 3D model will take forever.
