Why couldn't it be some vapid hollywood wannabe starlet instead? I know, he was 92 and bound to go soon but I do wish we had one of those miracle moments where he pulls through for another decade and Paris Hilton drives into a wall instead. But noooo, it has to be a legend instead. Fuck.

I think a head on collision involving Paris Hilton and Perez Hilton would be best.

I was actually shocked to find out years later that Cronkite is a flaming liberal. I never got that from watching him deliver the news every evening.
Edited to add his retirement speech:
This is my last broadcast as the anchorman of The CBS Evening News; for me, it's a moment for which I long have planned, but which, nevertheless, comes with some sadness. For almost two decades, after all, we've been meeting like this in the evenings, and I'll miss that. But those who have made anything of this departure, I'm afraid have made too much. This is but a transition, a passing of the baton. A great broadcaster and gentleman, Doug Edwards, preceded me in this job, and another, Dan Rather, will follow.[1] And anyway, the person who sits here is but the most conspicuous member of a superb team of journalists; writers, reporters, editors, producers, and none of that will change. Furthermore, I'm not even going away! I'll be back from time to time with special news reports and documentaries, and, beginning in June, every week, with our science program, Universe. Old anchormen, you see, don't fade away; they just keep coming back for more. And that's the way it is: Friday, March 6, 1981. I'll be away on assignment, and Dan Rather will be sitting in here for the next few years. Good night.
As much as Cronkite was unbiased in the political news spectrum, his replacement (Rather) was as much the opposite.
I wonder if Cronkite ever published any thoughts on the demise of Dan Rather...

lol @ "flaming liberal". As much as I disagree with you generally, your portrayals are always fun to read.

The end is extremely fucking nigh.
I'm pretty sure when Cronkite was born God went,"Thank you for coming...member of the press. Now, what I am about to show you is the first demonstration ever of the beginning of a universe. You have exclusivity but only if you dont tell people how I do it."
And that was the first example of bad journalism EVAR. Because now he is dead and we dont have anyone left that knows what a big bang looks like.

Get educated.
Please.
If not for yourself.. for the people you expose your stupidity to.
Thanks.

He disliked Rather from the beginning.. so I would wager he was pretty happy about it.
