How many ranks of trading do you need before you can start appraising things like gems and skins?

I have something like 38 ranks, and I can appraise stuff, though sometimes it takes multiple tries. However, I can't say as I can do so with any accuracy. A better question to ask is how many ranks do you need in trading before you can accurately appraise something's worth?

Do you think the appraisals are accurate when compared to the bard sung values? If you appraise something multiple times, do you get widely different values?

From what I understand, trading only affects whether you get a reading or not. If your roll is successful, you get a reading that is within +/- 10% of the true value. There's nothing you can do to reduce that range.

What items are appraisable? Just gems and skins, or can you get a reading for boxfound stuff that the pawnshop won't value?

Jewelery is appraisable, and the skill is very useful for identifying enhancives. Weapons and armor are not.

Appraisal with 202 Trading:
You peer intently at the ora band as you turn it in your fingers, meticulously inspecting for flaws. You estimate that the ora band is of average quality and worth approximately 538600 silvers.
Roundtime: 3 sec.

Bardsong:
This is a small item, under a pound. In your best estimation, it's worth about 550,000 silvers. You can also tell that there is some type of metal in the structure of the ora band.


Appraising is a good way to spot the jewelry based enchancive items.

MY advice would be to use the formula from KP (http://www.krakiipedia.org/wiki/Trading) to find a good threshold, then stop there. I had 26 ranks because 26 ranks + my INF bonus = 10% markup selling at stores. If I wasn't so TP strapped at the moment, I'd try to get back to that point.
