View Full Version : Pwned Video Card

Pretty sure the fan on my video card is taking a shit, since it barely turns anymore and runs hot as fuck.

Question I have here is....my PC runs fine (well not fine but it runs) when it's on its side with the case off. Within seconds after standing it back up, it turns off.

I shut down my PC to clean it and it installed some stupid Windows update. Got the dust out, hooked it back up and then this shit started. The fan makes a slight buzzing noise when it's (slowly) turning, like a struggling sound. I noticed this last night too but I couldn't tell wtf it was or where it was coming from, or that it was even coming from my PC.

Things have been running really shitty lately so I'm guessing it's been crapping out for a while.

I'm 99% sure the problem is because of the video card overheating, but just wondering...what would cause it to stay on until I stand it back up?

It's an EVGA 512-P3-N860-TR Geforce 9600GT RT if that matters.

I had the problem once before, turns out it had something to do with the screws holding the motherboard in place. When I turned the case standing up the MB would slip just a tiny bit causing the metal bracket to touch the MB.

It could be a grounding issue as well. Are you using the proper plastic standoffs and is the motherboard secured properly? Lose screws/etc. can do this sometimes too.

How did you judge that it was running "hot"? Alot of components these days run pretty hot.

The fact that the fan was barely turning, even on bootup when the fan usually goes full blast and you can hear it from across the room, combined with the fact that the card is too hot to even touch. I had to let it cool down for like 10 minutes before I could remove it once the computer shut down. It's still under warranty so it's getting replaced and I have my old video card I can use in the meantime once I feel like hooking it up. I'm on my PS3 right now. I guess if it shuts down like that with my old video card then I'll know something's loose, but the video card is definitely not running right. My performance has gotten drastically shittier since I had it (I'd usually run around 20 fps in Dalaran on Ultra setting, now I run like 4-5 fps with some effects turned down), so apparently it's been fucking up for a whiile.

As for as something being loose causing it to shut down when I stand it up, I suppose it's possible but I checked everything again and it all looks fine.

Got my box back yesterday. It actually turned out to be something on the case itself that was causing a short. Motherboard and all that shit is fine, but the video card was on its way out and I got that replaced. It's just not what was causing the shutdown, but it was still responsible for some stuff running like shit.

Reinstalled Windows and added another gig of memory too.
