So the thread to begin with is very subjective... Try not to bash the feedback at random.

Who are the fresh faces in the various genres that have gone against the grain?

The only big name act I can think of that hasn't suffered a great drop in quality is System of a Down, and they've been more or less perfect for quite a while. Though, I sincerely doubt the band will come back from hiatus unchanged in time for a new album in 2010.

Rob Zombie went to hell. Metallica went to hell. Linkin Park went to hell (and recently reverted to the Hybrid Theory-esque style that got them where they are). The rock genre as a whole has gone to hell. Alternative has gone to hell. Metal has gone to hell. Country is still (personally) irrelevant. Hip Hop is dead. R&B is dead.

Supply some NEW music that isn't horrible, and you get cookies. Anything to do with John Legend, Corinne Bailey Rae, and Justin Timberlake does not count, as that's far too easy (they all seem to have such ridiculous selection, and always end up making something worthwhile).

The only "new" music I know to offer up is Lil Wayne's Rebirth, as I've loved everything I've heard off of it so far (which is a bit odd for me, but ohwell). Yeah, the auto-tune is a bit annoying at times, but it works IMO.

That's why I like remixes and mashups. You get little bits of good stuff pieced together into something worthwhile.

And I completely disagree with your view of SoaD. They've never been perfect. But I'm fairly certain we have different tastes in music.

I like Regina Spektor too.. i know its ghey.. I dont care!

Not terribly new but not old either.

There's shit out there. We're just not as cool as we used to be.

But there's so much good older stuff I havent listened to I dont give a shit cause im constantly finding something 'new' to me. Just gotta get out of that 90's block (i too was a teenager in the 90s.. good times) Too many to list, gratefuldead, MU330, the string cheese incident, social distortion, motorhead, fireball ministry, bod dylan, the stones, muddy waters, MC5, john prine, etcetera etcetera.

Record labels began signing lots and lots of new music in 2002 and we are seeing the side effect of that now. Rock music, for example, changed when bands like Weezer got big in the 90s. Labels wanted more and more of that side, which slowly degraded into what it is now. The birth of Emo, Screamo and Post Hardcore Punk, in my opinion has ruined the rock scene, and it won't stop for awhile.

I strongly feel that '90s rock and metal is my favorite genre of rock, and wait for the day it can come back. Music with 7 string guitars, percussion bass and killer drum tracks is where it's at. For now, I stick to my Norwegian metal.

...though even traditional fallback Euro metal outlets like In Flames and Lacuna Coil have fallen into the same trap as every other band in the genre, it would seem.

At least Rammstein is chucking out something new later this year.

SOAD died after Toxicity; they should not come back.

Linkin park was (and still is) always terrible.

I'd check out the following bands, as far as metal goes:
- All Shall Perish (Chris Storey just left them, but their past 2 cds are incredible).
- Mastodon (Their most recent cd is break-through and takes a while to digest)
- Lamb of God (Wrath, their most recent is a mature articulation of this bands real potential).

I'd generally agree that "pop" rock is suffering right now. That being said, I think that Cage the Elephant is doing some cool stuff, as is The Killers.

As far as rap/hip-hop go, its mostly gone underground now. Lil Wayne is, and has been, certainly an innovator in the genre, but he's starting to (inevitably) get washed up into all the garbage. I'd give Jedi Mind Tricks, especially some of their older stuff, a listen.

I pissed Chris Storey off because I didn't think their music was too technical. He was very "it's VERY technical" and I was "I toured with The Number 12 Looks Like You, jazz metal is harder". We still shared a bowl but very different degrees of what we feel is difficult to play.

Check out The Absence, The Red Chord, The Faceless records also. I am really particular about metal, some of that stuff is terribly redundant. Particularly the deathcore.

Hardcore music has a lot more to offer and is still just as abrasive. I spent 4 years playing and touring in the metal scene and definitely prefer hardcore music when it comes to heavy stuff (if at all). Bands like Gray Ghost, Monarcs, Pyramids, and Hot Cross.

However perhaps I'll tell Demjorian to link you guys to some real music. You aren't going to find the good stuff on the radio or on cable television. There is too much money and politics powering what is released and distributed. Especially when that format of CD's and the labels become a very dying breed. By real music, I mean bands that still have to work real jobs and don't have a stylist or fashion consultant. That is not music, that is acting.

I listen to a little of everything and the longest running "good act" I can think of currently is the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Considering those guys got started in the late 80's thats a pretty big accomplishment(Random fact: they once were the main act touring with Nirvana and Pearl Jam as openers).

Im a big fan of Slightly Stoopid. Its got a ska/raggae'ish sound to it with some touches of blues/punk. Im going to see them in concert next month with Snoop Dogg and Stephen Marley. Try ....

I'll certainly concede that there are more "technical" players than Storey, but his mastery of guitar and putting together solid tracks are noteworthy.

I'm very much into technical death metal, but its just that. Akeldama was a great CD by the faceless, and they certainly win a lot of "this is impossible to play" awards, etc. but I think the overall sound sometimes lost in the sheer technicality. Know what I mean?

The Absence is a great band. Never heard of The Red Chord, downloading their stuff now.

I enjoy SS and a lot of rap/hip-hop.

However, Mr. Hendrix himself said it best, right before his death when he said that heavy metal was, "the music of the future." :)

And I like a lot of metal but I cant deal with the songs where its just noise. I know people see art or talent or whatever it is in them but I cant. Ill stick to my rock/rap/raggae/ska music tastes.

I have a few good rap playlists from the past 10 years of music or so as well but a good majority of them are either Lil Wayne, T.I or T-Pain(not the boat song). Or old school, Bone thugs n harmony, tupac, Dre, nas, nate dogg, Biggie etc.

I do have an AWESOME set of songs that were recorded from a jam session between Jimi Hendrix and Stephen Stills.

Saw Bela in South Bend w/Flecktones. Few groups of men more talented than that on Earth. And by that I'd only mean..

Al, John, and Paco.

I am all across the board except for the monotonous country and piss-poor modern rock.

Last.Fm is a better site than Pandora, I feel it nails the obscure a little better. I'm TreeIsLegend on there.

Yea, The guitar trio is wickedly talented, as well. I dunno about more than the Flecktones, though. It's a tough call, since John and Mahavishnu influenced the flecktones in a big way.

Really, though, once you get to that level, it becomes about differences in style preferences and not 'who can play it', cuz they all can.

(I jammed with the Flecktones at one point. You can't imagine how much more ridiculously talented they are when they're not puddling around on-stage and they're just cutting loose.)

Dear Mister Nut Butter,

I find your ideas intriguing and would like to subscribe to your newsletter. I too feel the same way about (insert music thing here), and it is time for change! We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today is our (insert music holiday) day! One of Canada's main exports is corn, or as the indians called it, Maze. Another famous indian was Crazy Horse. In conclusion, Canada is a land of contrasts. Somebody's gotta go back and get a shitload of dimes! Little bastard shot me in the ass. So I limped to the nearest saloon, crawled inside a whiskey bottle, and I've been there ever since.

Sincerely,

Wesley.

I listen to about 200-300 new bands a month so I definitely come across my share of good music (a lot of bands I listen to have less than 1000 plays on last.fm) but there's definitely a lot of crap to wade through. I'd say per 100 songs I listen to 3 or 4 get a 3 star or higher rating on my itunes which is the music I listen to repeatedly. Anyway, I'm not really a music snob unless some Backlashian type character tries to act like one when he doesn't know what he's talking about.

It's actually a great time for new music if you aren't lazy, you have access to so much new stuff if you'll take the time to listen to it. If you're used to the old radio method of someone picking what you are going to like it's probably a bad time since radio is dying a slow death and is becoming even more homogenized.

Like you said, music is subjective and all the bands you listed as having gone bad I generally didn't like in the first place (Other than Metallica). But here's some stuff that is new that I like, but not trying to pick bands I think the OP might like because I tend to like more down tempo stuff:

Dead Confederate - The Rat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cN055pYFGZs

Passion Pit - Moth's Wings: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Px12JPgc0ic

IAMX - I am terrified: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQDd9FIBIFY

IAMX - Kingdom of Welcome Addiction: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHWHMy_WZOo

Phoenix - 1901: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSLbW1S5gHA
(btw Phoenix is definitely likely to blow up soon if you want to be on a band before they were big, this is it)

Mimicking Birds - Burning Stars: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTo5pBEg7ts

Fight Like Apes - Battlestations: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1ciTSioxGk

Brighten - We Are Birds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zTu9j0R3Uw

innerpartysystem - Don't Stop: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyhSShullXc

Anyway, even if you think all the songs I put up are shit, there definitely is easier to access new music out there. Just gotta look for it.

Grizzly Bear is good shit man. I have this song in rotation.

Edit: They can be a little weird though. I was listening to that song Blackcurrant Jam a few years ago and could never figure out if I liked it or not.

We actually agree on something.

Grizzly is somewhat anti-agressive from what we’ve heard from the 02 music scene. Very talented and not full of angry chords of hate.

I don't know what this means. What are angry chords of hate?

They're still, as they always have been, rubbish.

Holy crap that's a weird video. Loved the song, though. Just clicking around on related videos, I found some old favorites:

Hi,

That's why I like remixes. And I completely disagree with your view of SoaD. They've never been perfect.
