Casting Script

[FinisWolf]

I am hoping to get some help with this script. I am admitedly the farthest thing from a programmer, so any help possible would be great.

The script works fine as it is,; however, I would like to set it up to A) be much shorter, and B) make it to where anyone that interfaces with this character while its in this script will get the desired reaction that is predetermined by the script.

So basically, I bring fred in from TC to get spells, I simply tell fred to "tap/rub/poke/etc" this character, and the character casts on him, without fred actually being written into the script.

As an adendemn, I did modify the names to protect the characters that utilize this privlidge that I afford them.

Hence, the reason for xxx1 thru xxx20.

Also, the reason I want to learn how to make it shorter. I let 20 characters manipulate my character to get spells, blesses, etc. 20 characters, multiplied by all the different interaction (I think there are 5 or 6) is a ton of code!

It would be alot easier, if the script did something like...

? taps you lightly...
<char casts blues on ?>

?? pokes you in ....
<char casts look and dims on ??>

--> while ? and ?? are not even named in the script.

I am sure I am making this more complicated then what it really is, hope you can dig out of these two posts what I am getting at. Thanks for trying at least.

You could simplify this script a lot. Basicly, the first matches that wait for an action should each to a heading where you save the name of person you will be casting on in the %s variable. Then, you only need to write each spell routine once, while casting at %s.

Alright, I feel generous, so I'll give you some tips that should really be able to shorten that script by a lot.

Let's think of what is repetive in this script. First of all you have to rewrite each section for each name. This adds up to quite a few lines of code, but all that is changed between each section is the name of the person you are casting at. If we could write a generic code segment that casts the spell, but can cast it at the needed target, we condense many lines into just a few. We can do this by using the Wizard's ability to SAVE a value in the %s variable. It would work something like this:

The last thing I showed you was a good way to reduce repetition when the only difference between code sections is your target's name. But the MATCH routines at the beginning of the script still have to be repeated for each combonation of name and action. However, we can use the %s variable to shorten this section up as well.

What I would recommend doing is creating one action to start the interaction and then go in to matching the action they perform. Would work something like this:

Alright, we shortened the code up quite a bit. I'm still figuring out how were going to use %c to shorten it up even more, but I thought of some ways we might be able to improve the script.

Because we are now MATCHing for a different whisper string from each person, we can use what the person whispers as a sort of password. I'm not exactly sure of the syntax the game gives, but it should be something like this:

Depending on where you do this, most people will probably be able to figure out that some people get spells for rubbing you the right way. However, if you use whispers to convey this information, it's a lot quieter. For example:
